Yes it is- you can see them in the foreground- there are 3 or 4 red spots lights turned onto the body of Smaug.

Yeah. I get both points of view. Neither picture is probably very representative. We'll have to wait and see in the movie to really know, I guess.

Re: More Hobbit pictures [4] SPOILER THREAD
The reason for Bard being young doesn't seem to technically go against the book, it just seems like pandering to me. It reminds me of Fili, Kili and Thorin.

For me the biggest indication in the book that he is not a young man is his style and mode of speech.

You can see the red light shining through the smoke at the bottom of the picture...Norc wrote:no.
and the second is in very cold, flat light.
First picture is in unnatural studio=esque lighting. Second picture is in regular daylight.
IMO the first one looks considerably better, but I'm sure the movie has gone through color grading so I can't say which is more accurate to how he'll look on screen.

Re: More Hobbit pictures [4] SPOILER THREAD
I think we might have to agree to disagree on this. Luke Evans is 34, but he looks considerably younger than that to me.Forest Shepherd wrote:To be fair though, film Bard does not look under 35, at least our modern perception of 35.
Anyway, I find the hate for Bard's family to be rather perplexing myself, and I agree that it makes sense for him to have had children before The Hobbit. I don't mind his kids making an appearance either, though I hope they're mostly background roles (I have no reason to suspect otherwise).
Re: More Hobbit pictures [4] SPOILER THREAD
That looks a lot like the other one that was taken without studio lights shining on it, though it's a much closer view too.Bluebottle wrote:

Re: More Hobbit pictures [4] SPOILER THREAD
I would say there's a certain hue that pervades him that doesn't come across as much in the daylight picture.
But you're right in that neither are as impressive as the artificially lighted one.

I'd just like to say, that in my opinion, they have handled the reveal of Smaug extremely poorly.
Also, he's not red. What the fuck.

Re: More Hobbit pictures [4] SPOILER THREAD
Yeah, I feel like it can't have been intentional for them to have revealed the design of Smaug in such a way, but then why did they start to do that with the trailer? It retroactively makes the silly AUJ prologue where Smaug is continually just outside the edge of the frame even stupider.
Re: More Hobbit pictures [4] SPOILER THREAD
I am also wondering why Smaug isn't red? I mean what exactly was the point in changing it? Is Smaug's colour scheme a new plot point or something? This smacks of the 'and all the comforts of home' nonsense

Maybe that's how the CGI team interprets "red-gold"?

Re: More Hobbit pictures [4] SPOILER THREAD
Perhaps...it is certainly open to interpretation (though Tolkien's own pictures of Smaug certainly look rather different to Jackson's version) but I always liked the idea of Smaug having regal colours like the jewelry he hoarded, like a shiny posh airborne flamethrower.
But I should point out I'm partially colour blind, so I have some trouble recognizing certain shades of green and red, and frankly I having really bothered or had the enthusiasm to watch most of the marketing for DOS.

Re: More Hobbit pictures [4] SPOILER THREAD
I imagine there are people within WB who are just as pissed off about the reveal as anybody here. I'd guess there's a spinoff marketing department that sold out the promotional people for cash.bungobaggins wrote:I'd just like to say, that in my opinion, they have handled the reveal of Smaug extremely poorly.

As for the not being red, it's not really a surprise considering the decision was made by the same folks who eliminated colored hoods and long beards.

No I don't drive, never bothered learning (noone in the family drives) couldn't really afford it, and frankly I wouldn't trust myself in a car.
I don't think traffic lights would be a massive problem though If I was inclined, common sense plays a part as well!

Dang, I like driving, but I kind of wish I lived in a place where it wasn't necessary to drive. But suburbs (and crappy/slow public transportation) will do that to you.malickfan wrote:No I don't drive, never bothered learning (noone in the family drives) couldn't really afford it, and frankly I wouldn't trust myself in a car.

As for traffic lights, the vertical order of them is just as important as the colors, so it probably wouldn't be a big deal. And yeah, common sense and paying attention to what everyone around you is doing is a big part of driving.
Re: More Hobbit pictures [4] SPOILER THREAD
A bit of trivia about stop lights:
The red/green for stop/go evolved from the running lights on ships. Red is on the port side, green on the starboard. Historically ships were steered from the starboard side, and mostly blind on the port side so if you saw the red running light it meant the helmsman couldn't see you and you had to stay out of his way. If you saw green you didn't have to worry because he could see you.
To this day vessel right of way rules of the road are based on this principle. When there started to be a need for traffic signals ashore, they just adapted maritime standards.

Re: More Hobbit pictures [4] SPOILER THREAD
Honestly in I'm thinking in Peter Jackson's mind he doesn't think of Smaug as the main villain. More of a secondary villain who comes after Azog and the Necromancer aka Sauron. Which he seems more than happy to be putting into these films. I really don't think Smaug is as important in Jackson's hobbit as he was in Tolkien's.
Jackson has already hinted at Sauron wanting to use the dragon with his made up White Council scenes. The Color of Smaug is off, the leg count from everything we have seen so far is off, What should have been the biggest secret of the trilogy was shown in the very first trailer. And has been being more and more revealed as it gets closer to the premier. I'm doubting we'll get Carc or Roac at all, we might possibly get the thrush but at this point I think we have seen all of the thrushes involvement we are going to see as far as the adventure goes.
It became obvious to me a long time ago that Sauron is a more important character in Jackson's Hobbit than Smaug ever was meant to be. Jackson is more worried about linking the ring and Sauron in the Hobbit trilogy to his LOTR trilogy than telling the story of the Hobbit that was in the book.

I'm betting we'll get at least one raven, and a thrush knocking, but mangled a bit, like the trolls in AUJ.Sinister71 wrote:I'm doubting we'll get Carc or Roac at all, we might possibly get the thrush but at this point I think we have seen all of the thrushes involvement we are going to see as far as the adventure goes.
