To be fair, Gandalf's fear of Sauron using Smaug, is from the appendices.Sinister71 wrote:Jackson has already hinted at Sauron wanting to use the dragon with his made up White Council scenes.

Re: More Hobbit pictures [4] SPOILER THREAD
True but it was NOT a plot point in the Hobbit, "Quest for Erebor" Yes, but not in the Hobbit story proper. The whole concept Jackson is pushing to the forefront is something they have no rights to use and are pretty much making it up as they go along. If they did have the rights and acknowledged the source material properly I would maybe accept Jackson's needless deviations a bit better.Radaghast wrote:To be fair, Gandalf's fear of Sauron using Smaug, is from the appendices.Sinister71 wrote:Jackson has already hinted at Sauron wanting to use the dragon with his made up White Council scenes.

Re: More Hobbit pictures [4] SPOILER THREAD
PJ is completely within his rights to use the "what if Sauron got Smaug on his side?" plotline in The Hobbit. These ideas were fleshed out in the greatest detail in "The Quest of Erebor", but they are also present in the LOTR Appendices (which is what Jackson has acknowledged as the source).
Appendix A.III - Durin's Folk wrote:Among many cares he [Gandalf] was troubled in mind by the perilous state of the North; because he knew then already that Sauron was plotting war, and intended, as soon as he felt strong enough, to attack Rivendell. But to resist any attempt from the East to regain the lands of Angmar and the northern passes in the mountains there were now only the Dwarves of the Iron Hills. And beyond them lay the desolation of the Dragon. The Dragon Sauron might use with terrible effect. How then could the end of Smaug be achieved?
Re: More Hobbit pictures [4] SPOILER THREAD
I feel a bit like "Sin" on this debate over Smaug/Sauron. PJ has seen in other movies the effect of a main baddie & what an impact it can have & how far you can take that character, ie:- Scream ? How many people dress up on Halloween as the "Scream" baddie, "Freddy" from Nightmare on Elm St is another. Its workable,do-able & rolls in lolly. It sticks in the mind. So, Im guessing PJ see's the advantage of that & is pushing the Sauron theory more to the fore than having a bright red "childs toy" dragon as the big surprise. Dragons are forgettable, hissing black faceless horrors are not. What baddies stick in your mind ? is the recipe similar ? Even Dr who had very similar villains with the "faceless monks", they even had Ringwraith stylee flaming swords.

In fairness to Who the headless monks are a metaphor about blindly following religious doctrine. And Id say the swords were more like fiery lightsabers.
Smaug should be red and golden, as Tolkien drew him - there really is no excuse for changing that, anyone who has ever seen the book with Tolkiens Smaug on the cover knows Smaug is red.

I was merely going by looks, but, looks can play a big part ? It is your advertisement, promoting your stuff is it not ? And PJ loves to promote his ideas, ( who is this guy Tolkien anyway ?)

I reckon the Thrush will have cute kids, one of them called Noarc and the other Eldoac. One of them will find Bilbo dangling off a Cliff.
Noarc says to Eldoac, ''theres a fucking Hobbit dangling off that cliff''
Eldoac croaks.
Noarc says ''stop fucking croaking and go and tell pops theres a fucking hairy footed loser about to fall off''
Eldoac rolls his eyes and flies off

Bree closes shop two weeks before the film comes out, how dumb is that.

Well it's not like the new owners seem to care about Bree all that much.
Fake edit: They started posting on their Facebook page again just in the last day with premiere-related stuff. They'd gone more than a month since last updating.

Looks a real shrewd investment then.

Re: More Hobbit pictures [4] SPOILER THREAD
As far as Bree closing the forum had something to do with money and someone not paying for the Hosting or something. I have one email saying one thing and another saying something different. I have been told they are going to be a few changes and that it should be back up but then I haven't heard anything since which has been a couple weeks ago. When I know something more I'l let everyone know... But I ain't holding my breath on it.

I recall the hosting thing coming up last time, but we haven't had any DNS or hosting error messages this time around. I appreciate you trying to keep in touch with these guys though, Sin. I know how hard it is to get in touch with them.
Re: More Hobbit pictures [4] SPOILER THREAD
well the owner actually threw their programmer under the bus when I last talked to them. Saying it was his fault about certain things not being paid, and blah blah blah. The new owners honestly do not seem all that involved other than shelling out the money for it. So I really do not know why they purchased it to be honest. Whether they have any ulterior motives or not they haven't let on to them. So at this point I'll give them the benefit of the doubt and hopefully Bree will be back soon. If not I'm still working on something but its slow going now that I am back to work.

Re: More Hobbit pictures [4] SPOILER THREAD
Well at least even if Bree stays down permanently we'll still have a Buckland.
Let me know if you want any help, Sin. Though I understand if you'd rather do it all yourself.

Re: More Hobbit pictures [4] SPOILER THREAD
Thanks Eldo...For right now I'm trying to push myself and do it alone but I might ask for some help in the future if you don't mind.

Re: More Hobbit pictures [4] SPOILER THREAD
Two clips showing extended versions of scenes already glimpsed in the trailers.
I think it's about time to bump the spoiler-free thread.

Re: More Hobbit pictures [4] SPOILER THREAD
I agree Tin.
Though Cumberbatch is one of those genuinely genuine people who struggle to come across badly in most situations. I still find his dedication to the role admirable.
I find Smaug a fascinating character as well. Being so intelligent and so powerfull, he still choses to use those qualities for evil and his own gratification. As Cumberbatch says the corruption of power.

Re: More Hobbit pictures [4] SPOILER THREAD
Looks like Smaug will be treated with respect, at least (provided the script allows it, of course). Though I wonder why every single actor in the world seems to feel the need to say their character is "vulnerable"

Well, to be fair, Smaug is vulnerable in one spot
