Re: Seen any good films lately?
I finally got a full screen (its ultra widescreen!) HD version of one of my favourite films of all time- Peter Greenaways, The Cook, The Thief, His Wife, And Her Lover.
Stunning to look at, its like watching a moving painting. Superb central perfromances, particualry from Helen Mirren and Michael Gambon. Deeply disturbing and quite diffifcult to watch with a hauntingly painful soundtrack from the brilliant Michael Nyman.
Not one to watch for entertainment but in my view one of the greatest British films ever made.
This short clip is a good example of the films tone and style (note how although the actors clothes remain the same they change colour to fit with the backdrop)

Yeah its good too. But I rather like the bleakness of Cook Im afraid!
Drowning by Numbers is good too- another ridiculous amazing Nyman soundtrack as well.
The two complement each others work perfectly.

Re: Seen any good films lately?
Films like Peter Greenaway's I enjoy, purely because they are to me like "waking dreams", You see what is in their heads, those private obscurities that sometimes WE keep to ourselves. "The Draughtsmans Contract" is a good film,"Restoration" with Robert Downey Jnr is another. So is "Dangerous Liason's" with Glen Close. Those are the sort of "period pieces" I prefer. (But a bit of "Darcy" never gets boring! hubba hubba!)

Re: Seen any good films lately?
Iron Man 3 was pretty good, definitely much better than 2. Unfortunately the film felt rather disjointed and certain elements, including villains, didn't feel properly set up. I enjoyed watching it, but it felt like there was a much better film lurking within that could have been saved with better editing and perhaps a few additional scenes. Still, I'm glad they kept the Avengers stuff at arm's length for the most part, since unrelated material being shoehorned in was one of my biggest complaints about IM2. The climactic battle was a bit much and I thought the ending was clumsily handled, although it had a nice message. Still, it was quite fun to watch, with a lot of solid performances and some good humor mixed in throughout. The Downtown Abbey bit that CC mentioned was pretty great.
Also, Marvel continues to have a winning track record with post-credits scenes that are absolutely worth the wait.

Reading about IM3 on another forum, the levels of comic book fanboy rage over
are absolutely hilarious. The only thing tempering my amusement is the awareness that other people probably looked at my passion for Tolkien purism the same way when I was really into those debates.

Re: Seen any good films lately?
Just watched the live action version of Asterix in Britain (UK title) and totally loved it. Looks beautifully French (if youve watced many French films you will know what I mean).
Its a mix of three different stories as far as I can tell, Asterix and the Vikings (hilarously called the Normans throughout on the subtitles for some reason!) Asterix in Britain and one I cant remember the title of where they have to get the Chiefs nephew to be a man, and he just want to moon about and be a bard and chat up girls.
There are also a few original additions that are very well done, including small suff like a satire on Italian politics when the Senate comes to audit Caesar for, among other things, using a private luxury barge to cruise the Mediterrean with Cleopatra.
And some more substancial ones that flesh out the English character brilliantly with a very funny pent up English romance with his fiancee (who he is meeting in this for the scond time in a year, and is fearful therefore that he is coming across as too brash and forward).
And probably the real joy of this in the cultural differences- from Obelix disgut at Biritsh cuisine to the differences in approach to romance.
And in my obligatory dig at PJ in a review, the difference with the additions here is that they fit entirely with the ethos of the original comics. This film is made not just with a great deal of love for the source, but a great deal of understanding of the source.
Oh its also not pc, Asterix cant be pc, the whole point is to paint a broad strokes satire of whole nations through a few characters. Its about how we all see one another- rather well exemplified in the boat trip across the channel when this exchange occurs-
Goudrix- What do you call a hunk in Britain? A tourist.
Asreix (to Jolliatrax the Brit) Don take it personally in Gaul we say that the Brits are kind of...I mean, you're not very.......What about you? How do the Britons see the Gauls?
Jolliatrax- I say we find you arrogant, loud mouthed, lecherous, cowardly, uncultivated, and dirty.
If you cant laugh at the stereotypes of each nations and especially your own, dont watch or ever read an Asterix comic!
Everyone else should find something to enjoy here.
(cant find it with the subtitles- but gives an idea)
Very keen now to see the others.

Re: Seen any good films lately?
I don't know if it's just my computer but the video keeps crapping out at 15 seconds and I can't watch past that.
Edit: oh, different video now.

Yeah was only trailer with subtitles too bloody typical- this is exactly the sort of thing that explains why I am crabbit.

Re: Seen any good films lately?
I meant that the video literally stopped playing after 15 seconds, not that I just didn't want to watch further.
I've only ever heard of/seen Asterix online but it sounds like a pretty amusing concept.

Re: Seen any good films lately?
Its the satire of the different nations and how they see each other, then how that plays out that makes it Eldo. Everything is a caricature, not of reality, but of how we think each other are, thats the genius of it.

Re: Seen any good films lately?
Why is the burning arrow in the background of the first pic hovering? Unless it was fired and is about to hit the Queen?
Re: Seen any good films lately?
The Romans are currently attacking, but being British no one is ruffled- the Queen just rings a bell for a servant to come and remove the burning arrow or lump of rock that just landed on the corgis and carry on.
The arrow is actually in the wall behind, just an optical illusion.
