Yeah, I'd call it done. At least for the next half decade.

Watched Dredd lastnight, not everyones cup of tea but i liked it.
The ultra slow mo violent scenes in 3d were bloody good.

Re: Seen any good films lately?
Thats spooky.
I was just about to ask if anyone had seen it, as Im curious what someone who dosnt know the comic at all might make of it.
Its a good old fashioned 18 rated action movie- and although a little short on the comics satirical humour it nails everything else pretty damn well. Urban is a good Dredd and she is a good Anderson.

Re: Seen any good films lately?
Great slice of scifi hookum is Total Recall.
I thought maybe Dredd had flopped at the US boxoffice because Americans couldnt get a handle on Dredd himself. Hes not exactly a conventional hero, in fact its qestionable if he could be called a hero at all. He is the law emobodied- something I though Urban got spot on.

Re: Seen any good films lately?
Shows the difference having the characters original creators on board as advisers can make if you compare it to the largely appalling Stallone interpretation- where they fell into all the obvious traps- showing you his face, giving him a personlaity and feelings beyond a dislike of anyone breaking the law, alove interest!
I would still like to see someone have a go at the more controversial stories- like the brutal crushing by the Judges of the peaceful proetests for Democracy and the after effect it had on some judges as well as protesters.
Three things I wasnt so keen on in the Urban version- the corrupt judges bit, Mega-city one doesnt have enough Mega Blocks- they should be the dominant building type, and there is no traffic in the sky either or ridiculous convulted and high up motorways that are a famous feature of Mega-city one- but those are pretty minor asthetic problems caused I suspect by budget.
Oh and the uniform is awful- it needs the shoulder pads and eagles or it doent look right.

Re: Seen any good films lately?
I have no knowledge of the comics, and rather enjoyed Stallone's version. Got savaged by the critics, but I thought it was good fun that wasn't completely mindless.

Re: Seen any good films lately?
It broke all the comics rules- gave Dredd a personality! Showed you his face - which has never happened in the comics- thats the point- the law is faceless, Dredd represents the law.
Mega city One looked a lot more like he comics however than the new version.

Re: Seen any good films lately?
I highly recommend this site-
http://www.classiccinemaonline.com/
Classic Cinema Online- it hosts classic films, it changes wats 'playing' all the time but there is always lots to choose from in all genres, from B-classics like The Wasp Woman to the blockbusters of the day.
Currently Id recommend House on Haunted Hill from 1959 with Vincent Price.

Do I lose geek points if I say I'd rather watch Downton reruns than watch Iron Man 3 again?

Im not in to those comic book films so I probably just cancelled out the geek points I earned with my last post.
as for you ally... what you lost in geek points you gained in dull credits.
so a net 0 I think

Re: Seen any good films lately?
Watched Wreck It Ralph- its, um, sweet.
From the trailers I had expected a satire on more games types so bit disappointed there are actually only two - an onrails fps and a cart racer.
As to the rest of the film, like I say, sweet, its a 'we are all different and thats to be celebrated' story- always a good message but ive seen it done less clumisly and this being American, its pretty sickeningly done in the smaltzy stakes (even the locations comply to sweetness!).
I thought Sarah Silvermans voice characterisation for the glitch as an annoying bratty kid was brilliant at the start. and just annoyng by the end.
I think the most crabbit thing I can say about this film is that if you are not a gamer, have never picked up a game in your life, it will still make perfect sense and you will barely miss anything.

Re: Seen any good films lately?
I watched "Robot & Frank" the other night. It was better than I thought it would be. It was light hearted & had its funny moments. It starred Frank Langella, who's a dam fine actor thats been around for years.
- Spoiler:
- Anyway, this film tackles the topic of senile dementia, but not in a depressing tone. A son gets his father a robot,to look after the old man. the father is a retired jewel thief, amongst other "habits",& at 1st the father cant stand having the robot around. But, in time, they actually form a close bond. In fact, the old guy decides to do another "job",with the aid of the robot. surffice to say,he gets caught & inevitably ends up in an old people home where the disease really kicks in.but not in a morbid way as was shown in "The Note book". I felt it had a touch of "shutter Island" about it,due to the fact the old guy didnt realise Susan Sarandon was not a librarian but his wife !
