Re: Seen any good films lately?
for the most part they've been tamely following in the well-trodden path ever since.- David
DS9 doesn't- which is one of the reasons I rate it so highly.
With all that is going on in the world, uprising, fights for freedom, wars, terrorism- ST is in the perfect position to offer the issues behind these things to the masses in a palatable form- just like the original did. Why miss that opportunity and simply turn it into a vechile for explosions? There is plenty scifi out there for that- why do it to the one sci-fi that stood for something more?
DS9 in particular is a great example of honouring that vision, maintaining the substance yet not retreading old ground but going somehwere new entirely. That is how to reimagine it, not with nothing more than flash effects and a tongue in the cheek.
As to the films being fanfic- well Rodenberry co-wrote the motion picture and wrote the book of the film (an interesting read- Genes own stuff reads often like fanfic- for example there is a whole bit about old humans and new humans- new humans have achieved varies degrees of heithgtened awarenss -all very 60's- and were the first crews Star Fleet choose- but whenever they met a superior or more advanced race these crews just gave up their missions and went to learn or live with them. Kirk's year at the academy were the first taken from the 'old humans' who had not evolved as far and who still held to archaic notions like retaining a surname- nowhere else in Genes own show do ideas like this appear, not important just an interesting aside I hope).
I am pretty sure he was also Executive Producer on more of the films until his death too, but I'm not 100% on that.
He also conceived of and wrote all the character outlines for Next Generation and approved those for DS9 (he died shortly before it began production)- so for me if you want to say that everything thats not directly got Gene involved is just fan fiction then that goes as far as DS9.
Only Voyager, Enterprise, the NG films and the latest reboot are outwith his influence.
Ive thought of a comparison to how I view the reboot.
Its the difference between Moffats reimagining of Sherlock Holmes, which respects the original, follows its lead and clearly has a deal of understading and love of the original- and the Downey film version of Sherlock Holmes which is all flashness and pace and no substance worth a damn and couldn't give a monkeys for the original.

Re: Seen any good films lately?
May I recomend Emmissiary- Ds9's pilot episode. In my view the best ST series pilot and although a lot of series 1 struggles to find its feet and to decide exactly what the show is about, this is a fine example of DS9 dealing in some different aspects of the ST universe.
And like the reboot it also has the task of introducing the characters and setting up their releationships, but it doesn't become what the show is about.
Enjoy, it was shown as a two-parter so its film length.

Re: Seen any good films lately?
The first RDJ movie is superior but he and Jude Law are a phenomenal Holmes and Watson in both.
Re: Seen any good films lately?
At the risk of starting a fight on two fronts, they are a good partnership Eldo- but they are a terrible Holmes and Watson however.

Re: Seen any good films lately?
I think the second RDJ Holmes movie is better. Or maybe I wasn't totally getting the first one, it was a bit pompous for my taste. But both has the same speed so...

Re: Seen any good films lately?
Mrs Figg- I could, and can if I can be bothered, provide a 100 clips from the tv series that knock this pap into a cocked hat. Have you even watched any of the 4 episodes I put up the link too? Until you have watched what you are comparing this rubbish to I will take your comments wih a deserved heap of salt.
Ringdrotten- A proper Sherlock Holmes man to add some weight to the discussion. About time given all these hand wringing liberal apoligisers I'm surrounded by right now.

Re: Seen any good films lately?
2 clips I was trying to find but no luck so far. (At this rate I will have to put them up myself)
The first one knocks that crappy Spocks birth one out the park. That scene you put up is totally against ST canon you know.
In ST V (one of the poorest ST films) there are a coupe of excellent scenes- one of them is when we see Spocks birth, and his pain. In that scene it is not the mother crying that gets a comment its the baby- Vulcan babies dont cry at birth, thats a human thing.
Sarek walks into the room, looks disadinfully down at the crying Spock and says "So human". The adult Spock who is witnessing this just turns away.
Its way more powerful, meaningful than that rubbish scene.
The other scene from 5 I was looking for is Mccoy's pain. We see his aging dying father. He has an incurable disease and is in constant pain. Eventually, after his father has begged him, Mccoy kills his own father by turning off his lifesupport- but thats not the worst of it- the worst of it is not long after they found a cure. ("A goddamn cure!") Deforest Keely is superb in that scene- its heartbreaking.
Two scenes in the poorest ST film that are better than the ones you put up from the new film Mrs Figg. Says it all really.

Quarks great- brilliant character- very funny.
They are also good for commenting on humans.
ST doing what it is does best and what the reboot film fails to do at all.

Re: Seen any good films lately?
More class ST. TNG this time. Proviong yet again why the reboot is not ST in substance.
Data has made an android daughter, Lal- but Starfleet see her as a machine and therefore proprety and want to take her away for study- if this doesn't move you Mrs Figg more than any of the crap in that reboot film then you are made of stone.
This scene always moves me too- in a trekkie sort of way. Scotty finds himself out of time and out of place in the world of TNG.
Compare the pathetic attempt at Scotty that is in the reboot.
I love how he talks to the computer:
Scotty: "The Enterprise. Show me the Bridge of the Enterprise you chattering pile of..""
Holo Computer: "There have been five ships of that name. Please specify by registry number."
Scotty "NCC-1701. No bloody A, B, C or D!"
And the moment he steps onto the old Enterprise Bridge is beautiful. You are sadly missed Mr Doohan.
edit add- another small glimpse of Ferengi insight into humans curtesy of Quark.
