chris63 wrote:Watched Good bad and the ugly on blu-ray with extra scenes in that i'd not seen before. Brillo. Might have to sneak it into my top 5 (again) 2 westerns in my top 5, not bad for someone who only likes sic\fi fantasy movies.
I've got the pulp novel of The Good, The Bad and The Ugly that came out in advance of the North American release. It was written from a quick translation of the original Italian script, so for example Blondy is called "Whitey". What's interesting is how much Leone cut out of that movie. There's a whole backstory on why there's a stagecoach full gold in the desert, on each of the characters, why Angel Eyes keeps popping in and out, sometimes in uniform, etc.
Leone's brilliance is knowing how to cut great bloody hunks out of a coherent storyline, then linger for long painful minutes on moments when nothing at all happens, intentionally put in discontinuities (Tuco's Colt is clearly shown to be an old percussion-cap-and-ball revolver when he assembles and steals it, but only seconds later he's loading it with cartridges). But after technically doing everything wrong in the editing, the result is still pure magic!

I saw a really good movie lately. Don't know if you've heard of it. The Hobbit?
Re: Seen any good films lately?
I'd been waiting since Mar 18, 2011 to say that...

it's great. it's about a hobbit, a small man with hairy feet, you gets to be with 13 dwarves and a wizard on this epic adventure. The bromance is great.

Re: Seen any good films lately?
Just watched the original Die Hard for the first time. Loved it. I can see this becoming a Christmas movie tradition for me.
Re: Seen any good films lately?
OK. I finally saw Judge Dredd.
Why cant they get Dredd right?
OK- the good first- Urban is a brilliant Dredd- he's got the delivery, just the right side of growly parody, spot on. The way Dredd is written is good too- they dont give you a backstory, try to flesh him out or get him in a romance- he is the Law, ole stoney face, just as he should be. And the helmet stays on all film.
In fact all the cast do their jobs well. Its obviously been shot on a budget by Hollywood standards but the cinematography is nice and effective.
So, whats wrong with it then?
Its too grim, too serious.
It misses some Dredd essentials- namely social satire and British humour. The two things that elevate comic Dredd above a generic violent future cop story. WHich this more or less is. In fact more than anything else it reminded me of Robocop 2- which is ironic as Robocop 2, written by British comic writer Mark Millar (who also wrote Dredd occasionaly for 2000ad), was clearly a Dredd film in all but name. And there was more typically Dredd humour in Robocop 2 than in this Dredd film.
Weird thing is the otherwise terrible Stallone film caught the essentials of Dredd's humour in its opeing titles sequence, then got the comedy all horribly wrong from there on in as well as lots of other problems. But the words of the recyle robot as it buzzes by 'eat recycled food. Recyled food is good fo the environemnt. And ok for you.'- was spot on to the comics snse of humour. And sadly lacking in this film.
This Dredd goes to far the other way- its relentlessly slo-mo violent.
Now Dredd comics were always violent- this is not a deviation from source- but it was levened by the satire and humour- which this film is more or less devoid of.
Its hard to believe this is the same world that gave us the Ronald Reagan Retirement Home for Demntia, or which satirised Margaret Thatchers 1980's Poll Tax, and its subsequent social upheavals, with the Block Tax Wars. Or which makes statements like, 'Justice has a price. The Price is Freedom.'
Its hard to believe this is the same world where Dredd locks little old ladies up for not having a liscense for their gold fish, or where sugar is sold as an illegal drug on street corners, an where one of the biggest most popular live broadcast events is the fatties eating contests.
What the Dredd film delivers is a fairly intense, ultraviolent action flick- and it does that very well. But its half a Dredd without the humour and social comment.
Oh and the uniform still sucks- without the shoulder pad and eagle the helmet looks too big and stupid, and worse, you lose the distinct judge silhoutte thats so iconic to the comics- be like taking the cape away from Batman.

I saw Skyfall. I really liked it. I think it had the best Bond song intro.

Re: Seen any good films lately?
Personally I really liked The Avengers. You probably have to be a superhero fan to really be interested in the characters, though. The actual plot isn't really the strong point.
Anyway, I finally got to watch Django Unchained today. It's the new movie from Quentin Tarantino. It's very good, but I do feel that it's one of his weaker efforts, which is a bit disappointing. Still, even a lesser QT film is still a great time, so I'd definitely recommend it. It's one of his most violent movies though, so it's definitely not for the faint of heart (or faint of stomach).
