Look at the roll of military "advisers" throughout history. People like Lafayette during the American Revolution. Often the only way to advise seems to be to demonstrate....

I don't suppose you could say where this is in Tolkien, Eldo? I've always been unclear about what instructions Gandalf received in Valinor. And was he even from Valinor?

If memory serves Gandalf tries to answer in UT the question of whether he was delibretly manipulating things and his reply is maybe. On a 'higher' level he is acting on a sort of divine intituition, but in his every day old man guise he is not really aware of it. I always saw him as a manipulater of events, an influencer, not a general at war. The wizards as far as I know were banned by the Valar from directly taking on Sauron themselves.

I'm curious as to why that is. Most likely because if a great evil ever rose again, Man would have to be able to deal with it by themselves with no one there to be there "General." But it makes for more cinematic excitement if you have someone super smart and powerful as a leading general.

In that case, Tin, I wonder why PJ made Faraamir such a dopey dork?

To show a larger journey in the character because the material that he had wasn't dramatic enough. Evil or Very Mad I like Faramir in the books much better, and I think every fan girl would too! And kudos to David Wenham for sticking it to PJ!

Rolling Eyes Apparently, Faramir was supposed to be even more deuschy than he was in the film, but David complained and they partially rewrote the character. I shutter to think what he originally was Shocked

About 150 people from The Hobbit production left Nelson Airport after filming in the area for a week. A crew member let slip that the group filming at Takaka Hill at Canaan Downs was The Hobbit’s “second unit.” According to him, “The main unit goes through first – we’re sort of like the mop-up crew.” As stated by the Nelson Mail, the crew worked grueling hours, from 4:30am to 7:00pm every day for six days. The same crew member said that the second unit would be joining the main unit in Dunedin, but that Nelson locals were “bound to” have some celebrity sightings when the main unit returned to the area in December.

Second unit shooting dawn to suk on location, gruelling shoot, first unit coming in later- my guess is they've been shooting for the Battle of Five Amries.
