I dont like it.  It all sounds really cheesy as a way of announcing it and its unfair on whoever gets the job, putting a lot more pressure on them than Im sure they need or want- especially if its a controversial choice like a woman.
Id much rather not have found out till xmas myself.

I suspect it is similar to when Matt got the job, they're filming Xmas scenes and need to do the regeneration scene soon. It'll leek pretty soon after filming I would think. It was a lot worse for David Tennat as that was leaked ages and ages before he was even due to do any filming so Beeb try to make sure they keep control of the announcements now.

I might even watch it if it's a Lady Doctor. (Lost interest after Pertwee, actually...) But no shield maidens, please...

I think this is the earliest official announcement- and having a half hour show just for the announcement seems a bit indulgent to me.
Its a tough enough job to step into with a lot resting on the lead.
I dont remember Matt or David having to do press stuff before they were in it, let alone having to do interviews and be in a program announcing them 4 months before they even appear in it.

There arent many female writers for some reason writing this sort of thing in TV, not really sure why not, - yet in the 60's and 70's you had female scifi writers like DC Fontana were doing Star Trek and the main ones who are writing today, well try watching the last series of Torchwood- it was female writers- killed the show stone dead.

Matt Smith's casting was revealed on Doctor Who Confidential a full year before his first appearance in "The End of Time" and closer to a year and a half before "The Eleventh Hour".

Yes but were they not forced to by leaks?
And he still didnt have to do a half hour live show just announcing him.
I can understand them wanting to have control over the announcement rather than the Sun sneaking it as a scoop but a show just to announce it seems a bit over the top for my tastes.

He didn't do a special show, but I'm sure there was quite a bit of an interview as part of it. It was Tennants casting that was leaked and I think that might have been even earlier.

Thats not a question surely, its a statement!
