Petty's Purist LotR Edits [3]

Yes Petty.

Start a production company, ally with the Tolkien estate, go to court, win back the movie rights from New Line and start production on a new version of the Hobbit.

After all, someone has to do it.   

I think some folks expectations of what is actually possible just by editing are a little unrealistic.

Besides the scene makes sense to me, only thing is missing now is him going out and trying to crisp the dwarves on the mountainside before he goes to Laketown- but his decision to go to Laketown is based on the same thing- Bilbo boasting about being Barrel-rider and in the purist edit of the film the reference Bilbo makes to the back arrows is the final giveaway and what sends him off in a rage to Laketown.

  re-shoot it dammit!

And while you're at it, remake LotR

It's impossible to please everyone I guess.

But perhaps that's just the way it should be.

So I'm back home with full internet, and when I try to look at Petty's dailymotion clip, I just get a blank screen - same as before.

Oh, its the browser - I switch to chrome from safari and it comes up.

I think the line "that...is a dragon" should be moved to after Smaug blows fire. Him just getting up is not dramatic enough.

I also think Bilbo's defense of Laketown should be cut. It breaks the action between when Smaug decides Laketown is to blame and when he leaves.

Personally I'd like to cut smaug's line "I am..DEATH" because it echoes the stupid line in LotR when Saruman says "so...you have chosen DEATH". I hate that line so much.

Theres no reason for Smaug to go to Laketown, I think unfortunately we need to see the Dwarves pissing him off.

Actually, I think the motivation is there in Petty's edit almost as strongly as in the book: Smaug sees a connection between a thief and Laketown. In the movie/edit Bilbo hasn't quite stolen anything yet, but Smaug smells dwarf on him and knows he's lying and that he's not visiting just out of curiosity.

I totally understand why they didn't go for the stolen cup motivation: in the book Smaug notices one little thing missing and goes berserk. With the mountain of treasure they have in the movie it would seem ridiculous. Even with a reasonable amount of treasure I can see the writers didn't feel they were any damn good enough to show the reaction that happens inside Smaug's head. That would actually take talent.
