Petty's Purist LotR Edits [3]

Oh it's a fairly classic Forumshire exchange, FS, though I must say this is one of the more entertaining ones.  

Lessee, we didn't find Frodo and Sam drinking together until after their big life changing adventure (which ultimately will result in Sam being elected mayor a number of times, a clear indication of change in class), so I wouldn't take that as evidence against a class structure. But I admit there's not a lot of evidence for it beyond the 'Mister Frodo'. Yet as a Yank I honestly couldn't give a rat's ass, I don't think it was a very crucial part of LotR - transferring loyalty out of the master/servant relationship into the sphere of friendship I think is actually somewhat minor. As Dave and Eldo pointed out, to Colonial ears the use of 'Mister' between long time associates always implies a hierarchy, though it would have helped if they weren't the same age.

It's true it misses an aspect of the story arc, but saying the writers always do this is untrue, in fact they bend over backwards to put an arc in if it wasn't evident in the book: witness Aragorn and Faramir. In the class structure case it was more part of the general trend to cut out some of the more subtle aspects.

Um, the establishing scenes are before Shadows of the Past- right before Gandalf returns from researching in Gondor.
That's when they drink together in the pub, and then go home arm in arm drunk together.
The very fact you confused this with the end of the film rather makes my point for me however, thank you for that!

And before even that we have Bilbo's party where they socialise together and Frodo laughingly encourages Sam to go dance with Rose.
Their relationship is clearly established in the opening scenes they appear in as being one of friends.

Sam doesnt become Mayor in the film, its never mentioned. Nor does he get to live in Bag End- the hobbit hole he returns to at the very end has a yellow door and is much more modest.

That statement contains its own explanation!

I think its important for what it says- its both the authors personal commentary on a variety of experiences, from the patriarchal narrow minded, yet friendly rural folk of his youth, through to his experiences with the honest British Tommy in the trenches of WW1.
I think the journey of understanding one another across a class divide to the reversal of their positions within society is still relevant and important today.
Its also the main arc of development in the book of their relationship- by leaving it out they dont have an arc and so start off drinking buddies and end up drinking buddies. Its pointless. Tolkien is never without a point, however subtly buried it might be.

Perhaps, but explicitly a class hierarchy? Especially when its not otherwise supported in either the script or the characters actual interactions on screen?

Actually I was thinking of the scene where all four hobbits are together in the Green Dragon afterwards, and Sam approaches Rosy for the first time. But you are right, I had forgotten about the earlier drinking scene.

Having a bit of a problem unpacking Book 4, Petty.

All the others went fine. Is this a problem on my side do you think?  

Damn! Someone else who recently tried downloading it had the same problem- is was ok but in the past occasionally something gets corrupted on the skydrive for reasons best known to microsoft  - which is a pain in the arse as I have the edits still of course, but not all the zipped bits- and that means re-uploading the entire thing. Damn it to buggery!!!!   

I will get on the task of reuploading book 4- but Im afraid I wouldn't expect it any earlier than in the next 3 days- it takes ages to upload and those are very big files.  

Can I ask what you have made of the first 3 so far? In particular I'd be curious to know what you thought of the Lothlorien colouring choice?- as its the single biggest colour correction change I made probably- or at least the most dramatic.

ps book 3 is probably my personal favourite.

I could try redownloading it,   but I won't bother if you don't think it will make any difference.

Bit of a busy day. I'll have to get back to you on the edits in more detail, but safe to say I'm really liking them thusfar.  

No, I wuoldnt bother trying again Blue- it does seem like there is a problem with one or more of the files on there- I will begin reuploading it- at least book 4 is one of the shorter ones- its only 4.15gig!!!

Petty; I know what you mean, it's a real pain moving those size files around on the net if you don't want to pay through the nose.  

Is Book 4 one of those who survived on Dailymotion by any chance?

Actually Im not sure- Ill check for you- although they are much lower quality.

No- gone sadly- I've stated uploading-its in 5 bits- so far its uploaded 10% of book 1, 10% of part 2 and 7% of part 3- it hasn't even started on the rest yet.

Shame, as I think half of them are still there.

Though one should perhaps expect Warner Bros to have bad taste even in the clips they choose to delete for copyright infringement, shouldn't one.

Well when I posted saying it had screwed up (and that was, let me see, 6 hours ago) I decided to start again but just do 1 file at a time rather than all at once- that one file is currently at 80% uploaded.  

Would appreciate an update when you're back from moonlighting in the movie industry, Petty.

FINALLY, I am able to download your purist edits, Petty!! I'll be viewing Book 1 first. Should be finished downloading in about 6 hours. Very excited! I'll post a "review" of sorts :-)

By the way, sorry I've been AWOL for so long. I've been lurking but really been struggling with my wellbeing. And now facing homelessness once again. Not to mention (shock, horror) my internet and phone being cut off as I haven't paid the bills! How will I survive?? I mean, I can sleep in a tent, but the internet is my entire social life!
