And my neighbour has two horses and lives in a coucil house and would punch you in the face if you called her middle class- Scotland is a very rural place. Horses are not a measure of wealth or class.
My original point was that Matt Smith seems to have nice safe middle class girls/women as assistants, not very challenging or alternative, because generally middle class people are seen as being a bit staid polite, educated and comfortable- Mrs Figg
That is the biggest pile of classist nonsense I have read in a long time, Im shocked at you Mrs Figg.

Oh dear pics of a scantily clad Billie Piper! What shall I do?!
I know, enjoy them! (I dislike Rose not the actress who plays her)

you may not like it, but its true. In England there are very defined cultural class boundaries, its not me being snobbish. Whether you like it or not there are social/class signifiers, its gone on since the dawn of time, I didnt invent this shit you know. Ur seriously telling me the middle classes are seen as rebels? cos they aint, they are seen as boringly domesticated in their nice comfy houses. Thats why generations of rockers and teenagers have rebelled against these things. sheesh.

Re: Doctor Who [5]
Mmmm I wonder if accent is playing apart here- east coast of Scotland accents compared to the west are soft, more clipped and pronounced.
To my ear Amy sounds, as Karen does, like working class east coast.
But perhaps to an english ear, (which I suspect only hears west coast Glasgow accents whenever Tv or film wants a 'working class Scot' in the script) might be confused in a way a Scot isnt?

Re: Doctor Who [5]
Heres the difference for you Mrs Figg-
1st is Glasgow second is Inverness (where Karen is from)
As you can hear the Inverness accent is very soft compared to the west coast accents. Much more polite souding in comparison but without indicating any class difference. Its just how the accent sounds.
But because of this people on the west coast think the east coasters are a bunch of stuck up rich snobs. And the people on the east coast think everyone in the west are violent scum.
If you hadnt guessed already Im on the violent scum side!

Re: Doctor Who [5]
My spolier filled review of Nightmare in Silver and the prequal to The Name of the Doctor, 'She said, He said'.
- Spoiler:
- I am going to start with the prequal to next weeks episode in which the Doctor describes Clara in the following manner:
'We're running together, and she's perfect. Perfect in every way for me......always brave, always funny, always exactly what I need. Perfect. Too Perfect.'
And possibly no other episode exemplifies this about Clara quite like Nightmare in Silver which sees her easily, smoothly, and without fuss shift from nanny to leader of a small ragtag military outfit. There is something not quite right about Clara, and its made very obvious in this episode-she is perky, resourcful, does exactly what the Doctor asks her to (never wanders off!) and is supsicously useful and handy throughout. The perfect companion.
She is also more reminscent of the Clara from Asylum than any other episode since in her speed of delivery and snappy retorts, and she speaks throughout in the very clipped manner she did in the xmas episode. We are delibretly having our attention drawn to the something not sitting quite right, something not adding up yet about Clara's personality.
In some ways its been detracting from me getting to like her all along, but given Moffat seems to be going somewhere with this next week I will wait to see how it plays out- but for now Clara continues to be watchable without ever feeling quite like a real person (which she might not be anyway!)
"Here we are. Hedgewicks world. The biggest and best amusement park there will ever be. And we've got a golden ticket!"
"Technically upgraded warriors. We couldn't win. Sometimes we fought to a draw but then they'd upgrade themselves, fix the weaknesses and destroy us. It's hard to fight an enemy that uses your armies as spare parts."
So the episode- well it opens with the TARDIS, Doctor, Clara and the two kids turning up for a fun day out at the galaxies biggest fair, Hedgewicks World.
Unfortunately they arrive a little late to use it as its fallen into disuse. The only people left there are a small platoon of soldiers sent as a punisment duty, a showman, Mr Webley (Jason Watkins), and his assistant Porridge (Warwick Davis).
Oh and some cybermen. Reminants of a war-these cybermen have been stripped and are merely exhibits but they are not the only cyber thing hanging about as we are introduced to the evolved cybermat- the cybermite. And they are very much active and looking for tech no steal.
The new cybermites look like a small silver insect and are far less clunky than the cybermats design and provide one of the episodes scarer images when a bunch of them crawl out the empty eye sockets of a defunct cyberman and convert Mr Webley.
But before we get to that the Doctor and his entrouge are invited to a game of chess, against a cyberman, the star attraction of Mr Webleys World of Wonders.
It turns out to be a dummy controlled from beneath by Porridge. Chess however will featue largely in this episode.
So in a nod to the first dotor cyberman story set on the moon the kids get to play on a fake moon with anti-grav before Clara tells the them its time they were going home and the kids to bed, but the Doctor has got something on his mind, cybermites! And insits they stay to check it out.
It doesnt take long before the cybermen are awake and we get to see the new model. Which are sleeker, with blanker faces, and in my view much improved voices and no longer just repeat "delete! delete!" all the time. But their biggest change is not in looks or voice but in abilities.
If a Whovian is honest there has always been a problem with cybermen and that is they have in the past been too easily defeated- the Daleks made mincemeat of them at Canary Warf in the time of the Tenth, they are fatally allergic to gold, they are slow moving, hell one of them was taken out by a well placed catapult shot in classic Who.
These new ones however can upgrade themselves on the fly, unlike their predecessos who would have needed a return to the garage for an upgrade.
Oddly this makes them more ST Borg like, but then as the Borg are ST cybermen its probably all fair.
Among their new abilities are detachable parts to go do their own thing and bursts of immense speed as well as adaptive defences. And they learn very fast.
In a poignant scene Clara learns form Porridge that there was a huge war with the cyberman, which was only won by the destruction of the entire galaxy the cybermen came from. And this episodes eventual resolution, to blow up the entire planet leaves the cybermen in a good position for the future as a credable threat- a catapult isnt going to stop these cybermen in a hurry.
Porridge- It used to be the Tiberiun Spiral Galaxy. A million star systems and a hundred million worlds. A billion, trillion people. Its not there any more. No more Tiberiun Galaxy. No more cybermen. It was effective.
Clara- Its horrible.
Porridge- Yeah, I feel like a monster sometimes.
Clara- Why?
Porridge- Because instead of morning a billion, trillion dead people, I just feel sorry for the poor blighter who had to press the button and blow it all up.
So the new cybermen take control of Mr Webley and kidnap the kids to use their young imaginative minds. Clara takes charge of the platoon of reject soldiers (the Doctors psychic paper having declared them emmassiries of the Galactic Emperor, who happens to be missing) and the Doctor, plays chess.
Clara takes her platoon off to Natty Lonshoes Comedy Castle- on the basis its got a moat and drawbridge and is more defencable, whilst the Doctor tracks down the former Mr Webler, now acting as Cyber Controller and the stolen children.
Unfortunately amonst the cybrmen upgrades is the ability to harvest non-human parts- and that includes the Doctor who is gotten by the cybermites.
Time Lords however have psychic abilities, and one of the Doctors is a mental defence mechanism to stop intrusions- but whilst he can stop the cybermen converting him, he cant get rid of them either- a stalemate.
So they play chess- winner takes all, control of the Doctors brain.
What this comes down to is that Matt spends a large chunk of the episode playing a sort of gollum/smeagol good/bad version of the Doctor. Switching between the Doctor we know and love and the cybercontroller version of himself.
Some of it taks the form of a confrontation inside his mind, with swirly Gallifreyian writing backdrop, but most of it takes place at the chess board, with the Doctor flipping between the two.
For the most part I loved these scenes, as Gaiman who is on record as been a huge Smith fan and delibretely giving him 'something to do' in this episode but perhaps indulges himself and Smith a little too much. I dont often critise Smiths performance, and Im not really here either, but the scenes where he plays both are maybe just a little too long and I am not sure about all the direction in those scenes either which I didnt feel helped.
Fortunetly for the Doctor the cybermens weakness to gold remains, and he slaps his golden fun fair ticket on the circuirty long enough to gather up he chess board and go join Clara, Porridge and the soldiers at the funfair castle.
"In other good news there a few more repaired and activated cybermen on their way and the cyber-planner is installing a patch thing for the gold. Wait that isnt good news is it? Good news. I have a very good chance of wining a chess match. Take me to a table! And somebody tie me up. Need hands free for chess. And immobilise me, quickly.'
So the cyberman attack the castle, the Doctor, using the sonic, and a bit of military hardwarr (his three move wining move) disappates the cybercontroller out into the cybermen, and in a lovely nod to the second Doctor story Tomb of the Cybermen we get to see there is a tomb beneath the funfair, and six million cybermen are waking up- and they all want to go to the fair.
So there is only one thing left to do, activate the bomb which will destoy the planet- problem is its voice activated and the officer needed to activate it is dead.
Fortunately there is one other person authorised to activate it. The missing Emperor of the Galaxy, Porridge (they make him look taller in the statues). And the man who blew up a galaxy to save a uiverse.
So they transport to the Emperial ship and blow up the planet and the cybermen.
But of course one small cybermite floats away in space.
Well Gaiman had big shoes to follow- his own. After the Doctor Wife expectations were exceptionally high for this but they are so different tonally and conceptually that its an unfair comparison.
Its certainly the best cyberman episode of NuWho. Its not perfect, the kids are for some reason pretty unpleasant grumpy ones. The boy coming over better than the girl who just whines most of the time. And its no bad thing they spend most of the time as cyber zombies.
Warwick Davis deserves a special mention, playing Porridge with just the right amount of understatement yet gravitas and I hope to see his character again in the future as it felt that there was depth there worth exploring more.
By contrast the soldiers are broad strokes characters Gaiman only distinguses by appearence, they are the fat one, the ginger one and the girl one, and although they serve their purpose they dont get much time to do more than that.
New look cybermen are a success, they seem even more inhuman than usual. And their voices are much more bearable to listen to. However why do they still have the stompy sound when they walk? It doesnt work with the new sleek look- get rid of it please Moff!
Overall a good solid episode with lots to like but a few minor bumps here and there which are partly down to direction.

Re: Doctor Who [5]
- Spoiler:
- I am not convinced by the Clara thing, it seems a bit obvious to have the Doctor doubt her a lot and then it turns out he was right and she is some weird creature Dalek/Cybergirl/Trick/Threat/Whatever. I am not convinced Moffat is setting up something so inevitable, but I could be wrong. Talking in that clipped sound-bite way of hers is not a so much as a sign she is wrong its more a sign of the way things are written these days, probably.
I would like to see it to make my mind up, do you have a link?

Well my usual Moffat rule applies- if you have thought of it its not what he is doing! I have yet to second guess him in 3 series. There is clearly something anomalous about Clara- but what or who she really is thats another matter.
