Norc you are conversing well and fluently in a second language- you already are proving yourself smart! I sure as hell couldnt do it.

Definelty you are very aware of what class you are -I was brought up to be worknig class and proudly so, in a away thats oddly a little reminscent of the old communist idea of the worker.
And when Thatcher was ripping up industry that was seen as a direct attack by the ruling class on the working class.

There have been similar shifts here Eldo, more working class people go on to college or univeristy than ever before , bt it doesnt change what class you are. If your born working class you kind of always stay it- like Alex Ferguson, Man Utd manager, proud socialist and working class man from oneof the poorest parts of Glasgow, Govan- but filthy rich now with mansions dotted around the globe no doubt. His kids wont be working class- but he still is.

My original point about class was about the tedium of watching a nice, thin, pretty, comfortably well-off girl with a boyfriend in the TARDIS. The whole thing is just so undemanding. There’s no sadness or substance underneath it because at the end of the day the whole Matt Smith/Amy Pond incarnation is just two sexy middle-class people who can’t do it because she already has a boyfriend.

yes, i think that may be the main difference between uk and us, it's the fact that whatever you do, you'll still be working class, even though you went to oxford, that's not how it is in the us. if you go to college, you've kinda reach a goal, maybe you parents never went, and this is "working yourself upwards".

I disagre with u and Petty from a socio-financial definition you can always escape class. But people cling to the ethos when they move off the council estate & into the mansion

watching a nice, thin, pretty, comfortably well-off girl with a boyfriend in the TARDIS.- Mrs Figgs

I dont see what Amy being 'nice, thin, pretty,' has to do with what class she is.
She has a working class accent. She has a low paying job and a boyfriend in a low paying job commonly taken up by working class hoping to work their way up a few rungs.

CC- you are right if you just judge a peron on wealth within socieety hem claiming to a millionare of the working class does not make sense- but people will still do it. And when the upper class fall on hard times and run out of money- they dont become working class either. Class int defined in the Uk psyche by wealth.

she is utterly middle class. She wouldnt last 2 minutes on a council estate. She is far more at home joshing about bow-ties in semi-detached commuter belt home.

Parts of Inverness where Karen grew up are nice, parts Ms Figg you wouldnt go into to.
She grew up in a Newtown built in the 70's. Her mother stayed at home and her father worked in a day care centre. So working class.
And thats how Amy comes across to me too, a bit hard edged and hard exteriored. Uses aggresion in her language to cover up any weaknesses.

Well as Karen uses her working class accent for Amy, and she doesnt have to- she uses a posh more english middle class one in 11th hour when she is pretending to be the police, I see that as a part of her character. Shes an actress she didnt have to use her own working class accent for Amy but she choose to.

Good scene this- the first few responses Amy gives is in her posh middle class accent- when she gets angry she resorts to working class Scots.

It means the charcater grew up around someone she could have picked up a broad working class accent from.

Either way there is no reason someone who is 'nice, thin, pretty, comfortably well-off girl' should be disliked just because she does not appear to be working class.
As far as I can tell Mrs Figg objection is that Amy is middle class an therefore of no interest.
I contest she is not middle class- but either way I dont see the relevance to how interesting that makes her character or not.

Doctor Who is to be honoured with a special tribute to be shown at Sunday's BAFTA television award ceremony.

Steven Moffat, Doctor Who’s Lead Writer and Executive Producer, said

'This is a massive and exciting year for Doctor Who, so I'm thrilled that BAFTA are including a special tribute to the show. So thrilled, in fact, we're sending the Doctor's best friend, Jenna Coleman, to present an award. We're also sending the Doctor’s worst enemy, the Daleks, to exterminate lots of innocent people. Sorry, it's just what they do. Let us know if it's a Health and Safety issue.'

absolute tosh. I dont dislike her because she is middle class. you are not understanding my point at all. My original point was that Matt Smith seems to have nice safe middle class girls/women as assistants, not very challenging or alternative, because generally middle class people are seen as being a bit staid polite, educated and comfortable. (generalizing obviously) whereas working class people (generalizing wildly again, so sue me) are seen as edgier and inner city street wise. A bit like Cockneys are portrayed as being cheeky chappies or Northeners working down t'pit or tweedy aristocrats going fishing/shooting in Scotland every Summer. its all cultural stereotyping and I am not saying its right, but people still understand them thats why Downton Abbey is popular. So going back to Who, I thought that Tennant had a more diverse and interesting range of social classes, thats all, so there is no need to get on the defensive about Karen Gillan.
