Re: star trek thread
I think the characters work in it still, though it takes a bit even still to get to the character stuff.
Its also when you put the story elements back together its basically a pilot for TNG and at least on a par with Farpoint in that regard, which I found interesting as this comparison is lost under all the boring effects shots- Decker is Riker, Ilia is Troi (they didnt even change the basic back story for them between the two).
And the V'Ger stuff always struck me as solid 60's style scifi thinking and I always liked the basic premise that a probe we send out comes back way more intelligent and powerful than it left. It certainly smacks of Rodenberry thinking, which to me has always had a touch of the Von Danikens to it.
I am not so sure the dialogue is weak so much as oddly delivered. For some reason that seems to be do with direction more than anything else. Characters, not even just minor ones, but main ones, make these weird stilted or shouty delivery of their lines at what seem inappropriate places. Its on of the weirdest aspects of the whole film for me.
But I like the character arcs- I like Spock going all cold and logicial from trying to complete the training an ending up at the realisation that a purely logical state of mind is in fact not desirable and rediscovering his humanity and emotional attachment to the crew.
And any film containing the following exchange-
Chekov- No casualties reported Doctor.
McCoy- Wrong Mr Chekov. There are casualties- my wits. As in frightened out of, Captain, sir.
Cant be all bad!
I like Kirk being so out of his depth and not even being able to find his way around the Enterprise now its been redesigned and his conflict with Decker over the Captaincy- I think its a theme that fits nicely into the second film with Kirk's character. The evnts of this film and the Kirk we see goes well alongside Spocks speech to him in Wrath of Khan when he tells Kirk it was a mistake for him to have accepted promotion. Its a satisfying continuing arc for me thats starts here.
And at least within the premise it presents the plot makes sense and is robust- unlike all the TNG films for example- none of which have a single redeeming quality to them (actually thats not true, I liked the way Generations sets were lit).
But thanks for taking the time to watch the edit Halfy.

Re: star trek thread
It seems like a cool story that could have worked, it just wasn't done well. If you read the Wikipedia article on it, the number of rewrites and transformations is just ridiculous. Small wonder the final product felt so odd.
The TNG movie with the Borg I think was pretty okay, but that's the only one that I really remember. What I had never put together before watching your edit is that the music for TNG is from the first movie!

Re: star trek thread
I think the music is slightly more obvious in this one because I edited it to follow the episode format- with it just starting, have a set up scene, then going into the intro and music.
Its the same format as TNG and the same theme.

Re: star trek thread
I liked first contact a lot. Generations was OK. The rest were very average.
Not sure why they struggled so much to make a feature out of the TNG lot. Shouldn't have been that hard.

Talking TNG watched a favourite episode earlier- Inner Light- well worth a watch -

Re: star trek thread
I wasn't sure watching that episode again if it would retain its initial impact, but it actually increased it knowing the end result and was even more moving.
- Spoiler:
- The final scenes with Picard just walking round his quarters trying to remember his life is heartbreaking, not a word is said, but the lighting, the lack of noise above him moving about, all emphasis the family, his wife, the grandchildren he remembers having a lifetime with. Its such a contrast to the preceding scenes playing noisily with his grandson. And its just beautifully moving. Patrick Stewart is outstanding in that scene.

Re: star trek thread
I know the acting's awful, Halfy.
Also, it says something about a person's reputation if you only have to say "crabbit pants" & everyone knows who you are talking about He's like a naughty child who goes quiet, you wonder what theyre up to ??

That's the #$%^&* gravity waves from a bad warp drive. It's like having bad shock absorbers on your car.
I think the acting is great!

I love the seated fellow in red (back right) who has to lift himself up out of his chair slowly before hurriedly hurling himself to the floor to catch up with everyone else.

It begins to take on a greater meaning, the more times one watches it.

I think that's more a reference to how heavily you tend to pant when in the midst of a crabbit attack.
