Lord of the Rings Humour: Parodies, Satires and More
Odo Banks
It's interesting to note, Tin, that many upper and middle class men in T's day spoke to each other (at least in writing) in what might be thought a slightly gay way nowadays. "My Dearest John," etc. Friendships could be close, I cite Sam and Frodo as an example, very intimate, but in no ways homosexual. I don't know that we'd have to be all that precious about Beren and Finrod's friendship. Finrod and Barahir's was close, and then Beren and Finrod's after that. It is platonic love. (And I do apologize for being so giggly about it earlier! I couldn't resist! )
As an aside, I find it amazing how often many "rednecks"and "sport jocks", who supposedly despise gay folk, love to go to fancy dress parties as women!!! And how many get all affectionate and teary when drunk - you should see the antics of some of my really butch mates! Phew! Life is truly an education!
Anyway hopefully we've got it all sorted now and get on with our movie planning?!

That reminds me of a scene in one of Kevin Smith's Jay and Silent Bob movies where a LotR fan character angrily says "They aren't gay, they're Hobbits" .
I'm sorry, I've been a bit too busy to contribute more to these threads. Hopefully I'll have a bit more time this weekend.

Yes, you have left me to carry the main 'waffle' load! Mind you - I think I'm the better 'waffler' (meaning no disrespect to you), so you left the site in good hands!
Funny line you quoted but I don't know the movie (movies?) you refer to. I hope they weren't referring to Sam and Frodo, or Merry and Pippin? I'm almost certain they weren't gay.
Hey! I stumbled on some pretty saucy fan fiction once. But I quickly closed my eyes and logged out before any serious damage could be done to my temporal lobe - nor have my sweet innocence stolen!

This part of the conversation reminds me of a juvenile but HILARIOUS remix of the Houses of Healing scene on youtube. Probably not suitable for prepubescents, but there's nothing at all pornographic in it. It just emphasizes the suggestiveness of the scene . It's fine for teens and above (indeed juvenile delinquents are more likely to be amused than "adults"

My sound's not working for some reason, GB, but as a silent movie it is pretty dubious. I see what you mean. Mr McKellen is gay, isn't he? And his Gandalf looks pretty gay too - with happiness, I presume!
Anyway, if you want to discuss this kind of stuff, you must go to the THE GAY SHIRE thread which I created for discussions like this...
This, I remind you, is the "Beren and Luthien (The Movie)" thread...

You had me going for a second Odo . I just went looking for the new thread so I could move these posts there . Did you check your volume control/mute "button"? Or the one on the youtube video? The sound effects are priceless  .
Okay, that's enough digressing for now. Hmmm! Maybe I should start a Tolkien Parody thread and move a few of these posts there.

GOTCHA!!!!
I'm having so much fun with this, I fear I've lost interest in this thread! Just gagging!
A PARODY THREAD 'would' be fun. Are you allowed to do it?
Odo
NB Must get back to those actors!

Alrighty Then!!! It's come to my attention that this new thread is past due. Largely because of one of The Hobbit Forum's infamous Digressions (in no small part of my own ).
In any case, above are a few posts originating on "The Beren and Luthien (the movie): directors and actors" thread. Please feel free to continue the conversation.
Post your fave youtube humourous Tolkien links, Jokes, Satires etc. here. Just remember to give us due warning of content, and try to keep it at least PG or R rated, no XXX . Oh, and please don't put any "language" in your actual post, just warn us if it's in your link so people can choose whether to view it or not.
GB
EDIT: Okay, I'm still getting the hang of some of the moderator functions . This should have been the first post . Maybe Beren will know how to fix it when he pops back in after his exams :ugeek: . But I think you get the idea. Have at it  .

Great thread idea. And GB, that video is hilarious! Here are a few I've found in my time. I've rated them as I think the should be.
How Lord of the Rings Should Have Ended (PG)
There are more but I like these.
Well I just remembered the one link rule after finding a whole bunch. Spamming time I guess to show all of them.

In repsonse to what Odo Banks said at the start of this thread, I agree that Frodo and Sam's relationship would be considered slightly gay had it been published in 2009 as apposed to the 1940s/1950s. I also think that in a book written today a character like Frodo's or any of the Hobbits would have been encouraged to be a bit manlier (I suppose manlier says it all really but anyway), because he is always getting carried and lifted around as if he were a child, he also does very little for him self on the quest, he gets help from the fellowship and Sam because he's a Ringbearer but I think today it would be considered going a bit beyond that.
I suppose, in conclusion, that times change, and considering Tolkien wasn't gay we can only guess the books were meant to be orientated towards a hetrosexual point of view.
Regards
Mr. Bandobras Took
P.S. Have you seen the Jack Black spoof, its quite funny

Haha, I just found this one parody... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=frQ3LvbQ0AE
....And there's plenty more where that came from!
In the cases of Frodo's and Sam's relationship, though, I wouldn't say they were gay. Would Sam have married Rosie Cotten if they were really gay? No, I don't think so....

Well it is considered gay by a lot of people in the current decade, though I agree that it wasn't what Tolkien intended. I think part of the issue is that the master/servant relationship of the Victorian period and the officer/batman relationship of WWI are both long gone by now so the cultural context of audiences is changing. For people with little familiarity of Tolkien's background and context, I think it is understandable why some might jump to the conclusion that they're gay.
...not really. Frodo does a good deal on his own, though of course he has help. He makes the decision to leave the Fellowship on his own and doesn't ask Sam to come with him. He's able to assert himself over Gollum an make progress towards 'taming' him into Smeagol, but does not make the mistake of trusting Gollum or alienating Sam (unlike the movies). He's able to keep on top of things quite well until they get into Mordor itself when the Ring finally causes him to start despairing. Then, Sam steps in.
Yup, I linked to it in an earlier post. I quite like it.
