A shining set of examples demonstrating why the ST reboot films are shallow pish and proper ST is about something -

I've always liked ST the Motion Picture- but it has a major problem. The actually stroy and characters are buried under long sections of nothing at all that is pure tedium to watch.

There are two criteria to pulling off a Kubrick 2001 just watch things happen film- one is make sure the things happening are furthering something- in Kubriks case he demonstrates the science of Clark by showing how life in space could actually work through purely visual means. Its not just looking, though there is a lot of that too.
The other thing is, be Stanley Kubrick.

ST:TMP is full of story/plot killing stretches of absolutely nothing at all besides look at our late 7-'s special effects.

So I re-edited it so I can enjoy it- here's an example, the opening battle between the klingons and the cloud.
I assume the idea was to have a punchy, action packed opening which set out the threat and set up the plot. That was before they decided to have long pointless shots showing cloud, bits of ships, and a space station just sitting there for a minute and a half shoved in all over the place killing all pacing and tension.
So I restored it to a punchy opening.
Its roughly half the length of the original scene-

Nice edit, Petty. I'm sure Star Trek 1 could be cut to fit the story into two 45 minute episodes.

Thanks Bungo.
My finished edit of it is a rather watchable 1hr 40.
In length and feel its like a pilot for a series that never was (Phase Two).

Decided just to upload the ST Motion Picture edit- no idea how long it will survive before being pulled but here it is for now, well the first part due to the hour limit, just treat it as Bungo suggests, as a two part episode. Second half is uploading.

this is good. I haven't watched the original since it came out since I remembered the tedium. I couldn't see any signs of editing in your shorter clip, and in fact remember very little from the original so couldn't tell anything except that it worked exceptionally well.  Thumbs Up

May look at the full movies over the weekend or something.

 No

I have enjoyed some of the films he has written (I liked Cowboys and Aliens and Transfomers 1  Sofa ) but I couldn't necessarily call them good...well at least he's likely to stick close to Abrams style, so the three films should have some sort of flow as a franchise.

 Shrugging

I'll wait for the casting before I get interested/angry.

Forget the crappy pointless not really ST at all reboots.

Rejoice instead that there is a new epiosde of the excellent Star Trek Continues out next month- and judging from the poster for it, with a bearded Spock, its a follow up to one of my favourite original series episodes; Mirror, Mirror.
Really looking forward to this one, if you haven't taken the plunge and given it a go yet I do recommend it.
It captures the feel of the original in exactly the sort of way the reboots dont.

The original was so bad that after watching your edit I realized I had only remembered about 15 seconds of it. This version is watchable, but still awfully weak, especially in dialogue. What made you like it enough to put in the time to edit it?
