As fine a version of Hounds as you will ever find Rindrotten- but oddly it has ever been one of my favourite Holmes stories, book or otherwise.
Its oddly lacking in Holmes for a Sherlock Holmes story!

Yes, it is strange that The Hound should become the best known Holmes story. It is a very good book, though, but as you say, lacking in the man himself! Still, one of my favourites is The Valley of Fear; McMurdo's story is one of my all-time favourite stories, not only from the Holmes books, but from all books I've read.

I suspect its the setting of Hounds- although we tend to think of Holmes as being always in a smog filled London of hansom cabs and horses, when they were written that wasnt nostalgia it was just normal, contemporary everyday life- so I think having a story set entirely out of that setting and on the moors was kind of 'exotic' at the time, if you see what I mean.
And although there are in fact quite a few Holmes stories set outside of London none of the others make use of the different setting as much as Hounds does.
