Rory's Dad is excellent, shame he only appeared in this and Dinosaurs on a Spaceship.
It does have an odd mood Power of 3, all of series 7a does, it has a sort of doomed inevitabliy about it as the Ponds time with the Doctor runs out, but there are a lot of things I liked about it- reintroducing UNIT with Brigadier Leftbridge-Stewarts daughter Kate as their new scientific advisor (the Doctors old job) I really liked, and I also get very moved by the Doctor's and Amy's conversation siting on the banks of the Thames and the Doctors speech to her-

'I'm not running away. But this is one corner of one country on one continent on one planet that's a corner of a galaxy that's a corner of a universe that is forever growing and shrinking and creating and growing and never remaining the same for a single millisecond, and there is so much—so much to see, Amy. Because it goes so fast. I'm not running away from things, I am running to them. Before they flare and fade forever.'

And its got some genuinely funny moments dotted in there, some great Amy lines-

Rory: There are soldiers all over my house and I'm in my pants.
Amy: My whole life I've dreamed of saying that, and I miss it by being someone else.

Not the greatest episode- the ends is rushed and I am still waiting for a follow up as it felt like a means of introducing the Shakri rather than an episode about them.

One of the ways I like to try to judge a Who episode is to keep an eye on how kids react to it, in this I am fortunate in that my little brother grew up watching 9 and 10 and my nieces are growing up with 11 (and hopefully 12!) as their Doctor- and they are a good way to be reminded of what the show is really about.

To that end I also keep an eye on a thread on Gallifrey Base- What the kids think- here's a few caught my eye from there relating to Cold War-

'daughter utterly terrified and spent the entire episode cuddled into Daddy, and she liked the Doctor's barbie doll..'

'My little brother (age 5) cried and had to run out of the room when the hands wrapped around the people's heads. I'm trying to convince him that Ice Warriors are not real but he keep's insisting they must be because Mars is real.'

'A classic episode - my kids went to bed absolutely terrified.'

'Six year old spent most of the opening twenty minutes with his face hidden behind a cushion. Once the suit opened, we had to turn it off. First time ever!'

kids terrified-check.
Kids with sleepless nights- check.

A successful episode overall then. Very Happy

I remember hiding behind the sofa as a kid really scared, my dad told me to go to bad as he was watching it, but I still wanted to see what happened so I crept downstairs and peeped round the corner, it was the Daleks that scared me most. I was 4.

Yeah Daleks did for me too. pale

Such an odd thing, to delight in scaring the crap out of our children- but thats Who for you- healthy scares.
And seems like there is nothing lke a good scare to fire up kids imaginations- they will watch in terror then spend the next week playing games where they defeat the monster.

I watched Blink last night. A couple questions:

What's with the 'Duck Now' rubber rock in the intro? Why would an angel throw a rock at somebody they could just grab? Do angels throw things in later episodes for reasons I don't know yet?

Also, does Sally Sparrow appear later?

There was a lot I liked, but that rock keeps troubling me.

Laughing Ive got to say the rock thing has never occured to me as a point of discussion.
No angels dont have a habit of throwing hings- although there is no physical reason why they couldn't- more likely it was the Doctor keeping causality going, he is after all a Time Lord so not linear. So he can go back to throw the rock at the appropriate time in the same way he can have a conversation that hasn't happned yet by using a transcript of it from the future.
You get used to these sort of things in Who.

No Sally does not reappear- a one epiosde guest role.

Blink was supposed to be a filler episode. Moffat says of it he and RTD thought they 'just about got away with it' and were not expecting the reaction it got- its the Doctor-lite episode, there is usually one every season where the lead is busy on other work, or just on holdiay.

At the start of the episode she peels back the wallpaper that has her name under it and the message is to duck- she ducks and a rock bounces off the wall- helping convince her that somehow whoever wrote the message knows whats going to happen (more I think about it, more it seems like a typical Doctor trick actually)

I look forward to your views Mrs Figg- could it be 2 episodes you dont
hate in a row! (If so best not tell Moffat, not sure he'd take the
shock!)

A clip from Dinosaurs on a spacship- featuring, well a dinsaur of course, Traci the triceratops in fact, and two ancient robots with a touch of senility.
One of the things I love about this episode most is the mix of traditional in camera effects and models and cgi. (Same with Cold War where all the exterior sub shots are traditional in camera effects with models and no water at all).
