It's proving a bit more challenging than I'd hoped. The new hotrod box of course doesn't come with a dial up modem, and my old external modem doesn't seem to play well with Windows 8 so I've got no way of getting the new box online without driving it to somebody's house and plugging it into a cable, and borrowing their monitor too if they'll let me.
It's a really cool box with a lot of extra bells and whistles once I figure out how to get it online, but practically for now it's turning out to be just a glorified external hard drive!
Also Spring is a busy time in the cranberry bogs.

Re: Doctor Who [4]
- Spoiler:
- I have been thinking about the new series and I have come to the conclusion that they have gone back to brass tacks. the Doctor is now firmly the lead and the assistant has a more traditional Who role of being a foil for him and saving him at oportune moments instead of the main focus like the Ponds were which unbalanced things for me. I liked that Clara got to show some gumph and save him in Hide, she is growing on me, at first I found her a bit 'actressy' but she seems to have cooled it, and is more natural and appealing, she is not as characterful as say Donna, but there is an interesting mystery, the Doctor wonders what she is and is still a bit worried if she a trick or trap. I am soooooo glad the Writers have finally ditched all the 'female' reproduction crap. Clara is a good old fashioned assitant but with an edge. In this episode she showed vulnerability and her first doubts about him. I like that the TARDIS is also doubtful about her, thats another mystery. Is it me or is the Doctor getting more and more worryingly Cockney with every episode? I also like him far more, he finally got me really believing in him, I find him funny now whereas before he irritated me. its almost like a different Who and I like it lots.

Re: Doctor Who [4]
I too was a bit uncertain of Clara as a character- I thought Rings did a lot for her character, and I can see why its JLC favourite episode. That was the first time I felt that she was a real person in a full sense, not a plot device. And I was worried we were going to retread ground already well covered by Amy.
Rings dispelled that feeling and I am warming a lot more to her now.
I'm not quite sure what you mean by 'female' reproduction crap.
If you mean the family aspect of Amy/Rory/River I am glad they went there- it was completely unique in the shows history. There have been more companions on the TARDIS at once, but never a family or married couple.
The one shot that best somes up the unique feel it gave for me is at the start of the Flesh two parter.
Amy and Rory are playing darts. There are clothes over rails. Cups lying about, shoes. Mobile phones charging on the console. It looks and feels like somewhere they live, a home. Combined with the warm colours and almost womb like Console room it had the TARDIS has never quite had that feel before.
I wouldnt want it to be that way all the time but thats Who's saving grace, its never anyway all the time.
(And thats not a defense of anything! Just an explantion of how I see one aspect of the 'Pond era' on the show now I can look at it as a whole in the overall context of the shows history)

Re: Doctor Who [4]
No it has absolutely nothing to do with family. That part has Always appealed to me. from Roses family onwards, I dont have a problem with showing the Ponds as a family unit. marrieds are ok with me.
My problem has Always been the use of the female body as a plot device. ie, pregnancy, forced or otherwise, Amy as a being defined by being a wife, mother, and being able or not to reproduce. I dont want to get into the question further than this as its one of those subjects where I feel strongly it has no place in Who being a childrens fantasy tv series.

I find that interesting- not to argue the point, you know my views already, just that the idea that you feel it has no place in Who- which is overall my main objection to the Rose story arc!

Re: Doctor Who [4]
yes but Rose doesnt go through what Amy has to suffer. its just icky and it makes a lot of women uncomfortable. Its not like its informational for youngsters or they could learn something from it, I think its more likely to worry some very young girls, but this is only my take on things.

"I think its more likely to worry some very young girls" - Mrs Figg
I have no way of judging that save by own observations of the female kids in my famly and friends families.
A very small sample group of course, but they were all very positive towards Amy as a character and of Rory. The fact they were married seemed to appeal to them too. Princess and her Prince fairytale element I would guess. And they liked her fiestiness, and when she slaps people or gives them the hard look- but then my sample group are all Scottish!
Queen Nefretiti- Are you a Queen also Amy?
Amy (hesitates a moment then sets her jaw)- Yes, yes I am.
It's great for emails and forums, and not much else.- David
Wel at least we have you here, we should be grateful for that mercy at least. Wish I'd thought to just include vlc player on the mem stick for you- in fact did you check to see if I did? 'cause I have a nagging buckie embued recollection of at least thinking about it at the time.

as far as Young girls go I have the opposite view from my own observation, having an English friend with a young daughter,
- Spoiler:
- by all accounts she found the Amy in a White box being forced to have a kid against her will, very traumatic, and many explainations were needed to reasure her.

- Spoiler:
- I wont say she was forced to have the baby against her will, she wanted to have a baby with Rory, she forced to give birth to it in a manner that was against her will.
Ive spoilered this and the above so as not to spoil the storyline for Dave- unless he's reading it anyway- in which case you shouldnt be!

It doesn't appear to be on the stick, but hang on. I think we may be onto something!
I've got an copy of VLC on my XP laptop. I think it's been updated within the last year or two. I wonder if it would be transferable and compatible with Win 8 ? I just tried to cop/paste the program across between the machines via a flash drive, but I seem to have only transferred the shortcut, not the program itself. Do you know if there's a better way to copy and transfer the program? Or does it need to be folded up into an executable file first? I'm afraid much of my knowledge of such things comes from the stone age....
