Re: Countdown to Release [2] SPOILER THREAD
Well they are going for epic Dwarven mythos. They are making the Dwarves like souped up medieval warriors, to match the Elven and Men mythos of LOTR. Dwarves were under- represented in LOTR and they are using this opportunity to really delve deep into the mines of Dwarvedom, who knows what horrors they will unleash from the deep.

Re: Countdown to Release [2] SPOILER THREAD
my local theatre is so cute. Look what they managed to put together for the "movie-description".. awww... (I am smiling at it because, well...)
and it says:
We know that the first movie will take on the start of the book and it will probably end with the company's battle agains the wargs after they come out of the misty mountains. Benedict Cumberbatcg has said that some of the last you get to see in the movie is Smaug's eye, but that was before it was announced to be three movies, rather than two.
I find this cute because no one knows who BC is if you donæt spell it out that he plays Smaug. It is so vague and, well.. at least they tried.

I'm surprised that you haven't told everyone in Norway who Benedict Cumberbatch is by now, actually.
Re: Countdown to Release [2] SPOILER THREAD
From the Ny Times-
Ms. Walsh and Ms. Boyens, a former teacher and hard-core Tolkien fan, said part of the solution came from Tolkien’s appendices to “The Lord of the Rings.” Those materials helped the writers create a bigger part for Gollum, a fan favorite, and explain the relationship between Gandalf and Thorin, an exiled king played by the British actor Richard Armitage.
I wonder how big a part?- what from the appendices concering Gollum could be used besides moving the Hunt For Gollum much earlier?
Any suggestions?

Re: Countdown to Release [2] SPOILER THREAD
I think they're referring to two different things. The Appendices discuss Gandalf's and Thorin's meeting before the start of The Hobbit, and they also talk about Gollum. I'm not sure what they plan to do with Gollum, though. He's said to have tracked Bilbo's path as far as Lake-town, but that wasn't until a year or so after the events of The Hobbit if I recall correctly. They might simply move that forward.

Re: Countdown to Release [2] SPOILER THREAD
I ultimately decided to forego the midnight premiere this time around since it's in the middle of finals. It shouldn't be a problem next year since I'll hopefully have graduated by then so I can enjoy all the midnight madness then. I finally pre-ordered my tickets though: the evening of December 14, opening day in the US. I'll definitely be going with my brother and possibly with my step-mom, depending on her work schedule. The anticipation is building.

Re: Countdown to Release [2] SPOILER THREAD
It's still a little hard to believe after looking forward to it for so long. It might not really click for me that I'm going to watch The Hobbit until I'm in the theatre and the film starts.
To be honest, despite my reservations about splitting the films, I'm kind of glad that there are more to come so that I can walk out of the theatre knowing that there's still more to look forward to. It'd be painful to suddenly have no more Middle-earth movies to anticipate after four years of eagerly watching every bit of news.

Huh?! by my count you will have spent a grand total of 1 year in college and will have graduated. Talk about precocious youngsters!

Review- dont know anything about the site or the reviewer (anyone?)-
http://flipanimation.blogspot.co.uk/2012/12/film-review-hobbit-unexpectedly-long.html
'if you wondered, like me, why a rather slight book needs the same running time, over three movies, as its big brother....This is achieved by adding subplots and by dragging out every dialogue scene beyond what is dramatically necessary, throwing in a ditty or two for good measure. The action scenes are sometimes spectacular, sometimes feel like a videogame and are almost always too long. The increased frame rate makes for a super sharp TV picture that I found to be rather distracting. With every detail in extreme focus, it robs some scenes of atmosphere and in the big action set pieces, it makes it hard to direct the eye to what is important.'

Can't say I'm surprised. I don't see many other ways to adapt six chapters of a kid's book into a three hour film. :/

Re: Countdown to Release [2] SPOILER THREAD
I'm curious to see how the 48fps turns out but I'm not going to see it like that the first time around. I want to be able to enjoy the movie for what it is -- however that turns out. When I rewatch it I'll see it with higher frame-rate and see how the technology is. If I enjoy it I'll watch parts two and three in 48fps the first time.
Re: Countdown to Release [2] SPOILER THREAD
people said they felt sick afterwards, suddenly I am glad our theatre isn't that high tech.
Re: Countdown to Release [2] SPOILER THREAD
Not really surprised some people felt the movie is too long. It sort of is. That's the whole point of adding all this extra stuff.
He probably could have told the whole story in 3 hours really effectively if the studio said no to more films.

I wont be seeing it in 3D, the glasses give me nosebleeds. and I very much doubt my local cinema has 48fps capacity.

Re: Countdown to Release [2] SPOILER THREAD
SPOILERIFFIC new clip (skip to 2:38).
Appears to be from fairly early in the film. Definitely an addition or change of some sort. It will be interesting to see how it plays out in the context of the complete film.

Radagast is with them?
And the wargs, hope its just the quality but they looked really fake, like they were superimposed on top, particualry the first one that jumps in.

Re: Countdown to Release [2] SPOILER THREAD
To be perfectly honest, my first thought on seeing the vegetation and the warg design was that it looks a lot like the thanators (panther things) from Avatar.
I'm still glad they got rid of the hyena designs but I'm not sure what to make of this. And yeah, Radagast's role in this film is a big WTF.
