I was flicking through this thread trying to find which page had the filter pics on them- stumbled across this from Eldo I;d forgotten about-
'I still haven't gotten a new computer yet. I'll let you know when I download it though. I do want to see it, it's just that now is not the best time.'
And this from Queen Tin
'So is this a new version of your edits petty? Because I might have another crack at downloading it since I've got a new computer!'
And yet not a word from either of you. Well, explain yourselves!

Forget all that, Mr Tyrant! I should much more be glad to know what Eldo is doing in that his new uniform (and shorts!) of his per his Avatar, for it certainly brings back memories of my Summer Camps as a Needlehole Junior Shiriff --- and especially old' Mr Pryse-Crevice!!! ... Re: Petty's Purist LotR Edits
I just got done watching the first three "books" and I can't wait to watch the last three. There are no two ways about it, Petty. Your'e edits are excellent.
It has been quite a while since I watched the movies and I think that made it easier for me to give your pure versions an objective viewing. I just watched them to enjoy rather than looking for every little detail that you tweaked. After a first viewing I don't have specific suggestions on different ways you could have done it.
Unavoidably (due to the method available to you for this project) there are numerous little "glitches." For example, there are some abrupt change in lighting, etc. that are an artifact of splicing two scenes that were once separate into one. Also some minor continuity glitches that result from the removal of PJ's more ridiculous stuff. For example, Aragorn shows up bedraggled and alone at Helm's Deep on Brego for no apparent reason...not your fault it's just what you had left to work with after the warg attack was edited out. In each and every instance these are the sort of problems that could have been completely avoided had the movies been filmed and edited to a proper script in the first place.
There were some things that I particularly enjoyed. One was your new subtitles for the elvish language scenes, such as the ones between Aragorn and Arwen that portray their relationship more accurately. Another is how you miraculously edited each and every elf out of Helm's Deep without noticeable loss of essential plot material. I am wowed by the scale of this project even though I am sure I can only begin to fathom it.
I am interested to see how Books 4-6 work - PJ deviated further and further from Tolkien as the story progressed which surely made this project harder for the later portions of the story. No matter what, your versions really bring home the magnitude of PJ's arrogance. The myriad changes that he made to the script were totally baseless; the movies are coherent and wonderful without them. If I ever watch the "real" movies again it will probably only be to compare them to these edits.
Thanks Petty!

Re: Petty's Purist LotR Edits
Glad you are enjoying them Yooper.
The task got somewhat trickier and somewhat easier as it went on- trickier because the deviations got ever greater, and easier because moving all the Shelob stuff back where it belongs in Book 4 left a lot less to edit.
You may have noticed in some places they are not 'purist' either- I left the palantir scene at Orthanc in for example- generally speaking these are cinematic choices- removing them either knackers the flow or is to jarring- and part of the aim was to make films someone could watch as their first experience of LotR's and still follow and not be jarred too much, too often.
Which brings me to your point about Aragorn. The idea I was going for there is that Aragorn was out scouting, spots the army and returns to report it. I have found people who have watched PJ's version get confused at that cut and find it jarring, as you did. And those who have never seen PJ's make the assumption he was out looking for the enemy- even if some are observant enough to be puzzled by his ruffled appearence.
Although in neither interpretion is it an ideal way to do it- but it overall I think my edits do demonstrate what you say- that PJ made changes which he justified as necessary to make it work on film which were in fact not so.
The story as presented can be told just fine on film and if all the stuff I cut had ben replaced with more from the books the films would be substanially better again.
Its also amazing what first time viewers of it (those who have not seen PJ's) dont notice- for example not one has noticed that Aragorn's sword changes from the Paths of the Dead onwards, only about half notice Aragorns cut on his shoulder in the Helms Deep scenes- things that seem obvious to me when I watch them.
Thanks for watching Yooper and thanks for commenting too.
Now I rather embarrisiingly need to put out an SOS- I have not only forgotten the password to the second skydrive containing book 4 onwards- I've forgotten what name I even made the account under.
This leaves poor Yooper stranded without the rest of it.
So could some kind soul who has access to the second drive please pm the link to it and I can reset the password from there. Thankyou.
ps I am now an expert elf remover!

Not at Helms Deep you don't- they ruin it, take away from the peril of the situation, make no sense (how did they get there for one and where do they go for another?!) and the story is considerably better without them.

Yes but how did he get to Helms Deep? How come every elf dies when old men and boys survive? And where is the peril? Soon as the elves turn up its a much more even fight- ruins the whole thing.
Trust me Mrs Figg- it works much better as Tolkien intended it.
You'll just have to dl my edits to see that however!

Maybe PJ will do a spin-off of Taurel and her elven friends for you, Mrs Figg!
And the story might begin... the buxom Taurel 'Wood-woman' or 'Wood-star' (fun with typos) with her sister Tauriel 'Wood-daughter' (or Wood-woman, can't recall at the moment the somewhat complex linguistic tale of feminine suffixes ) arrive early one morning to the abode of a handsome Loremaster, to whom they seemingly deliver mail...

Re: Petty's Purist LotR Edits
Actually the lass playing Tauriel doesn't look very buxom- I mean if they are going to ruin things by shoehorning a badly made up character into TH the least they could have done is picked one with huge knockers. Especially in 3D!
And by the sounds of it I need to stop by the Tower of Lore more often.
