Re: More Hobbit pictures [2] SPOILER THREAD
Sorry Chris- I must have missed it somehow, or blotted it out. Lot of butterfly mothy things about..mmmmm.
I've thought most of the posters so far have looked damn amatuerish and photoshopped, and thats insulting some very good amatuers out there.
I mean that one of Gandalf that had the genuine english countryside in it- very nice and all that but they left a huge line where the NZ grass met the background grass with a completely different green and worse- a railway track complete with bridge- what's that? The 8.20 to Bree for the commuting hobbit?
You dont expect that sort of sloppiness from the official stuff- doesnt exactly fill one with confidence.

Re: More Hobbit pictures [2] SPOILER THREAD
Has anyone else noticed about that pic that
a) he has a staff very similar to Gandalfs in LotR's- are we getting an Istari version of Aragorn taking Boromirs gauntlets? (assuming Pj offs or moths Raddy)
b) I know he is rustic and all that but he appears to have mushrooms in the most unfortuntate of places!

Mmm, nice tech and all - liking that- but the one on the right looks like he is made of rubber and the one on the left I just want to punch repeatedly whilst yelling "You are not a f**king dwarf all right?!"

Re: More Hobbit pictures [2] SPOILER THREAD
firstly I have to disagree about the Gandalf poster, there is no obvious line between the NZ grass and the English grass, the colours are different because the English grass is in the DISTANCE and far away, its supposed to be down in the valley therefore the colours change. secondly its not a railway track but a stone bridge, with a castle in the background. You dont see the tracks and you dont see trains, just a stone bridge.
I do however agree about the placing of the mushrooms thanks for attracting my attention to IT.

the one on the left... you wanna know what I would like to do with him?
Re: More Hobbit pictures [2] SPOILER THREAD
A Victorian stone bridge though Mrs Figg!
And the grass line looks really obvious and glares out from the pic to me- as someone who does a fair bit of graphic manipulation thats an amuaters mistake and was the first thing my eye was drawn to- I could sort it in a minute or two. And if I can then a company paid to do so on behalf of WB sure as hell should have fixed it.
Norc- I most certainly would not!!! {{Orwell will proabably ask though }}

Petty is the only one I know who can recognise grass, simple boring grass, and get really crabbit about it.
Re: More Hobbit pictures [2] SPOILER THREAD
Norc wrote:Petty is the only one I know who can recognise grass, simple boring grass, and get really crabbit about it.
To his credit, he was able to recognize the poster as England grass before the story about how they used a picture of the English countryside was published. That made me take his grass arguments a bit more seriously. Before I had just thought grass is grass, who cares? But clearly there is a visible difference to those who do care and I've been on the lookout for it since.
Re: More Hobbit pictures [2] SPOILER THREAD
It's not just the type of grass, it's the 'Englishness' of the landscape and the tended gardens, the stone walls, the light...
Petty has noted all this. New Zealand works well enough for some of the film, but not for all of it in my opinion.

Re: More Hobbit pictures [2] SPOILER THREAD
Heres the pic again.
As Elthir points out its not just the big line where the darker green of the NZ grass meets the yellow of the English, or just the worng sort of fauna, or the wrong lighting, its also the difference in pasturalness (is that a word?)- the english countryside is as Tolkien describes the Shire- rolling hills, little woods and copses of trees, well tended fields and gardens-ordered land and welll tilled earth- NZ Shire looks overgrown, untended and therefore unhobbitlike in my opinion.
And that bridge I still say sticks out like a sore thumb- its way to modern looking for the Shire- and its not like it would be hard to remove- I could do it with the clone brush in about 30 seconds.

Re: More Hobbit pictures [2] SPOILER THREAD
yeah, agree, the bridge is a bit not fitting, but aren't you happy they at least try to do "the real hobbit" feel for the movie poster?
Re: More Hobbit pictures [2] SPOILER THREAD
It only emphasis to me Norc that NZ is not suitable for everywhere- the Shire being one of those places- its not that PJ;s Shire looks bad,it does not, its just looks wrong when it could have looked perfect.
That poster shows exactly what I mean very well- the foreground the grass is tufty, wild looking and long-unkempt.
The background picture everything is neat, ordered- the grass is short, the woods and trees tended- its just a different mentality it gives which says something about hobbits (and I suppose the english) without the need for words- sort of the perfect thing for a visual medium.
All PJ's Hobbit farmers we see whilst Bilbo narrates at the start seem to have lots of produce from a rather small and very scrappy looking bit of land*- I dont get any sense from PJs of the Shire as a largish place split into Farthings- I get the impression its one small town located around Bag End- whereas even just the background in that picture gives the impression of a much larger area of land that has all been domestcated.
*You should know about this Dave- I always thought it looked like poor ground for crops- and so low lying it would be prone to flooding.

Why bother?! WHY BOTHER?!!!
Have I taught you nothing about crabbit in all this time?! If everyone had your attitude people will get away with any old nonsense.
Besides let the crabbit flow- its good, its healthy and its needed in the world. (especially crabbit aimed at PJ )

Re: More Hobbit pictures [2] SPOILER THREAD
Thanks for posting the larger image Petty, that really highlights what you're saying. I still like the poster but I can't look at it now without stuff like the grass line jumping out at me.

Wow, that's really good! Having both images open in their own tabs and switching back and forth really highlights the differences. I love your version and the editing is really clean.
Re: More Hobbit pictures [2] SPOILER THREAD
Thanks Eldo - less than ten minutes and noone was paying me to take care! Makes you wonder who they got to do the original!
