Re: Doctor Who [3]
Oh, that's who she was! I liked her though, she was cute and believable. I was just distracted, wondering if they used the name Astrid to honor a passenger of the real Titanic. Felt a bit random to suddenly have a Scandinavian name there among the silly 'alien' names.

Re: Doctor Who [3]
The Titanic ep isnt Moffat Amarie- pure RTD- couldn't you tell?!
If you are going to watch the Titanic episode Norc best watch this first-
"Some good bits though and some really cheesy horrible bits"- Amarie
Thats the best summing up of the RTD era in one sentence Ive ever seen.
Incidentally Astrid is an anagram of Tardis- much to the annoyance of Neil Gaiman who wanted to call the Tardis in human form Astrid but couldnt becuase RTD had used it up on some nondescript popstar.

Anagram. Right, now I remember, it's been mentioned once or twice. Had to be something.
Feel free to use it, with credits.
I was sure it said Moffat during the intro, hence me feeling very, very confused. We see two or three eps at the time, and I didn't look during the whole intro so I thought I'd mention it here and find out if he had been bodysnatched or only been allowed to dot the i's or something.Pettytyrant101 wrote:The Titanic ep isnt Moffat Amarie- pure RTD- couldn't you tell?!

Re: Doctor Who [3]
I'm back! Hello Who thread!!! I never thought I would see you again!!
I got let out of the Forumshire hospital early- I said to them, 'whats the point of hooking me up to this piddling buckie drip when I could be inthe Duck and Muck hooked up to a barrel?'
I feel like I could dance- Whoooo!YAAAY!
Lets get those kilts swing! Whoooo!
So here I am, back and drunk and with a fluffier sporran then ever before!
Norc I love the Power of Three pic except who the smeg are those three at the top? And I am oppposed on basic principles and decency to any association between Who and HP- with the possible exception of having Emma Watson as a companion now she is all grown up and hot.
And why isnt it the trio from the Sarah Jane Adventures?
I bring with me a new teaser trailer for The Angels Take Manhattan.

the ones on top are from supernatural. This picture is basically the four biggest fandoms on tumblr, so would hold up too much hope for other shows.
Re: Doctor Who [3]
Norc I love the Power of Three pic except who the smeg are those three at the top?
To be precise they are Sam and Dean Winchester - Demon Hunting brothers and the rogue angel Castiel who helped them stop the apocolypse.
(currently Dean and Cas are stuck in purgatory having just sent the leviathans back there, with Sam left all alone in the big bad world after Crowley -the king of hell as Lucifer is locked back in his cage- abducted the latest prophet)
Waiting to stream the start of the new season this/next week to find out what happened.
They are the fandom lumped into make superwholock.
suprised to see HP as the fourth as fandom seems to often add merlin as the fourth - (superwhomerlock or superwholockin)
- Spoiler:
- looking forward to tonight, but rewatched asylum tonight and then pond life and was struck by a thought. As DW seems to be moving backwards in the ponds timeline in the last three eps, does asyllum fit before of after what we've seen for them? As pond life seems to suggest that the doctor seems to remember dinosaurs/ town called mercy when bursting in to seemingly warn of a danger - poss power of three? it is possible he is moving back in their timeline. As we know angels is the swansong for the ponds is it possible that the divorce and asylum are their last adventure before the end?
This might also provide a reason for him then hooking up with Oswain in her new? guise
I'm bound to be wrong, and I don't think I've explained myself very clearly. Mainly just trying to wait patiently for the ep and failing!

Re: Doctor Who [3]
Spoiler free press reaction to last nights Ponds departure (my own review will be up later, just got something in my eye at the moment..)-
The Independent-'The Angels take Manhattan was a wonderful swansong to the duo, it drew on the film noir genre and combined it with fantasy and horror. Added to this, the cinematography was superb.'
The Telegraph -'a powerful, taut, compelling, filmic, emotionally punchy affair which re-established the Angels as one of the standout monsters of the series and gave Amy Pond a fine send off. 5/5 stars'
The Guardian- 'This was a fitting end to a golden era, and bravo to Steven Moffat for telling such an involving, emotional story with such style.'
Digital Spy- 'beyond script and performance, 'Angels' also boasts superb production design, another in a long series of enthralling Murray Gold musical scores and dynamic direction from Nick Hurran. Is it perfect? Perhaps not - but it did leave us feeling both moved and almost entirely satisfied. Moffat faced an uphill struggle here, and while it would be easy to split hairs based on individual preference, with all things considered, 'The Angels Take Manhattan' remains a great piece of work.'
SFX- 'a glorious, daring, gutsy, high-concept and hugely entertaining slice of Who, with individual moments of the show at its best: creepy, funny and visually arresting. 4/5'
The Daily Mirror- 'Doctor Who now demands attention, and it's simultaneously a wonderful and a rather sorry thing that one of the most challenging dramas on TV at the moment is ostensibly aimed at kids.'

Re: Doctor Who [3]
My spoiler filled review of The Angels Take Manhattan.
- Spoiler:
- "I hate endings" the Doctor says near the start of this episode, ripping the last page from the book he is reading so it never has to end.
But much as the Doctor might hate endings they do keep happening to him, or at least to those around him.
The story opens in Old New York with a hackneyed PI taking on a case for a Crime Boss- to investigate statues that move when you are not looking at them.
Intriguied to know what could scare such a person the PI heads to the address given- Winter Quays, a suitably creepy towerblock festooned with statues.
Inside the PI finds, well himself, alone and in a room, old and dying before the Angels get the curent version and displace him back in time to feed off the resulting energy.
Its a beautifully shot opening, nicely creepy and tense and sets up the basic premise of what the Angels are up to very well.
Meanwhile in present day New York the Doctor, Amy and Rory are having a nice day out in Central Park where the Doctor is reading from a pulp detective novel written by one Melody Malone.
And whilst Rory goes to get coffee the Doctor reads to Amy- as it turns out he finds he is reading about Rory and River.
Amy- "What's River doing in a book? What's Rory doing in a book?"
Doctor- "He went to get coffee, pay attention."
Amy- "He went to get coffee and tured up in a book! How does that work?"
Doctor- "I don't know. We're in New York."
Rory meanwhile finds himself in New York 1938 with his daughter, River, and a bunch of gangasters with an interest in the Angels. River is Melody Malone, and the book the Doctor is reading she will write in the future.
So the Doctor and Amy head for New York, 1938, River having included the date in her book. Unfortuntely the Angels have made a bit of a temporal mess of 1938, "like trying to land in a blizzard" and the Tardis fails to materialize "1938. We just bounced off it!"
The Tardis instead rematerlaises back in New York present day, albeit in a graveyard- "its probably causally linked" the Doctor dismises. Graves and this episode certainly are.
Whilst the Doctor tries to work out went went wrong Amy is reading ahead in Rivers book; "why do you have to break mine" I asked . "Because Amy read it in a book and now I have no choice" the Doctor replied', - having read the future now the Doctor is bound by it to avoid a paradox- when the moment comes he has to break something, no choice- with that in mind he bars Amy from reading any further ahead and so setting the future in stone (sic).
"Once you know whats coming its written in stone" the Doctor explain as he leads Amy ino tthe Tardis and the camera pans down over the gravestones to reveal the name Rory Wiliams.
Whilst the Doctor struggles to find a means to get to River and Rory, River and Rory go meet the gangsters in 1938- they quickly decide Rory is of no use to them and throw hm to the 'babies' in the basement.
As Rory lands sprawled on the basement floor his guard throws him a box of matches with the words "The lights are out. You'll last longer with these."
"What do you care?" Rory asks and gets the chilling reply, "its funnier."
What follows is one of the best creepy scenes in NuWho for my money.
The Angels are in the basement, cherubs to be precise and the sound design for them, with their haunting giggle is superbly creepy.
And as the matches keep going out and the 'babies' scuttle around in the dark the direction really cranks up the tension.
And whilst Rory meets his fate downstairs River meets the gangster upstairs who wants information about the Angels- he has a wounded one in his 'collection' and it gets River by the wrist- to damaged to shift her in time its grip is still to powerful to get out of.
Fortunetly the Doctor via a trip to China in 300bc to visit a vase maker has found a link to 1938- as the same vase is in the gangsters collection.
One major tearing of the fabric of space time later "You bad boy, you could burn New York," River purs and the Tardis materialises.
River however is still stuck in the Angels wrist "Are you going to break my wirst or hers?" River asks him. Bringing us back to the bit Amy read in the book.
"why do you have to break mine?" "Because Amy read it in a book and now I have no choice"
This is delightful way to set up a basic premise of the story- that of casuality and paradox. Using the chapter list in the book for clues without 'spoilers' the Doctor tells Amy Rory is in the basement and Amy goes to find him, at which point he sees the last chapter title:"Amalie's Last Farewell'.
This prompts one of those wonderful occasional rages from the Doctor -the impotence of the Angry God.
"You get your wrist out!" he demands of River, "You get your wrist out wihout breaking it..I dont care how, just change the future"- he has to know these futures can be broken and storms off to find Amy and Rory.
Rory meanwhile has been zapped by the Angels again- this time not backwards in time but a few blocks away in space- to Winter Quay, the same tower block the PI in the opening sequence went to.
This information is conveyed by a freed River, having managed to seemingly defy casuality and break the future- but as they hurry off the Doctor takes her hand- she has broken her wrist to free herself.
"Why did you lie to me?"
"Because when one is in love with an ageless God who insists on the face of a 12 year old, one does ones best to hide the damage."
Rory meanwhile has entered the creepy Winters Quay and found his own room there. As the others arrive it is just in time to see Rory meet his older self- and to watch him die in his bed.
"I'm sorry Rory, but you just died."
Arthur Darvill is superb in this scene- beautifully playing Rory's reactions to seeing himself die.
"This place is a farm. A battery farm."
And not just Winters Quay- all of Manhattan- including its most famous staue, Liberty- now a weeping angel too.
So how to stop causality? Break it off course. If Rory escapes it makes a paradox, poison the well and unmake everything that had happened.
Doctor- "Its almost impossible."
River- "Lovng the almost."
Doctor- "It would take an immense amount of energy to make a paradox that big. What have we got? Eh? Tell me? What?"
Amy- "I won't let them take him. That's what we've got."
Karen really sells that line- you wouldn't mess with Amy here and the bond between them as never felt so strong.
So Amy and Rory run for escape but get split from the Doctor and River by the Angels and driven up to the roof. Where Liberty awaits them.
What follows is one of the most gut wrenching scenes, one of the darkest and one of the bravest scenes I think I have seen in Who since the classic series.
Rory thinks of a way out. To jump.
Amy- "Stop it. You'll die."
Rory- "Yes. Twice. In the same building on the same night. Who else could do that?"
Rory the man who keeps dying, oh Moffat you cheeky devil.
Rory- "The pardox will kill the Angels. Please, tell me I'm wrong, because I am really scared.....oh great. The one time you can't."
Mention must go here to Murray Golds superb music in this episode- and in particular in this scene- its as heartbreaking as the dialogue.
Rory- "To save you, I could do anything."
But its Amy and Rory, inseperable. So Amy seeing no other way out climbs up onto the ledge to join her husband.
"Together. Or not at all."
Enter a distraught Doctor with River to demand "What the hell are you doing?"
"Its called marriage" Amy replies as they step off the building, together.
The paradox is broken. Fade to white and then zap- Amy and Rory are back, waking up lying in the graveyard where the Tardis is parked in present day New York (remember that casual mention of a casuality link?).
Doctor- "I could have lost you both. Don't ever do that again."
Rory- "What did we do? We fixed it. We solved the problem."
Doctor- "I was talking to myself."
So everyone heads for the TARDIS and a family outing to the pub. But then Rory notices the gravestone, the stone with his name on it and calls Amy over.
And then in a blink of an eye (sorry) he is gone and a lone surviving Angel is standing there.
Its hard to get across the speed and shock with which this happens. One moment Rory is there and the next gone forever.
And with the time lines around New York all screwed up the Tardis cant go back to get him without creating another massvie paradox and rift, enough to destroy New York.
With noway to get Rory back Amy to the horror of the Doctor chooses to follow him, to let the Angel take her- "I just have to blink" she says brining the Angels back to their introductory episode.
"You are creating a fixed time. I will never be able to see you again. Amy. Please."
"Raggedy man. Goodbye"
And with those words Amy is gone and her name appears on the gravestone alongside Rory's.
"Don't travel alone," River warns the Doctor. Remember the book by Melody Malone? It had an afterword, for the Doctor, written by Amy. The last page the Doctor tore out in Central Park.
"Do one more thng for me. There is a little girl waiting in a garden...."
The final scnes are of little Amelia Pond sitting waiting in her garden.
This is a scene in 11th hour that was a little odd and always seemd a bit out of place. In it we see Amelia waiting and then hearing the Tardis sound and looking up and smiling and then it cut faded to another scene, making it seem like a dream sequence or wishful thinking on Amy's part- now it makes sense- he did come back, to tell her the story of Amelia Pond who would fight pirates and fall in love with a man who would wait 2000 years for her. It also explains all the stories littel Amelia told her best friend (and daughter) Melody in Lets Kill Hitler as they were growing up.
Moffat you wiley old dog you.
Some mentions here to Nick Hurrnan who directed this and Asylum of the Daleks- bost are masterpieces of small screen direction and capture the cinematic feel Moffat said he was aiming for perfectly.
Golds music this series, always a joy, has been some of his best work in my view and this episdoe is no expception.
I normally single out some scene or other of Matts' for particular praise but there are so many in this one its impossible.
And at the heart of the episode Karen and Arthur nail it absolutely. The emotional beats were spot on for me.
So a bittersweet ending to the Ponds. But a fitting one thats feels complete and satisfying.
And the end of a Who era with the farewell of the longest serving companions of NuWho and the Tardis' first ever married couple.
Its been a wonderful ride Ponds. I for one will miss you and look back on the last 3 series of Who with great fondness becuase of you.
But the Doctor goes on, and Christmas beckons- Richrad E Grant as a vIctorian villllian and a new companion. Bring it on.
After thoughts- what is going on in the title sequences?- all this series the time vortex shown in the opening has been getting madder and madder- and this episode the poor old Tardis took a right battering in there- is this just a design decision or is Moffat up to something again?
And is this ending the reason Moffat dropped in that bit about Amy not being able to have any more children afer Demons Run, a few epsiodes back? That would certainly reduce the complications given they were sent back in time together.
Unanswered questions- as usual with Moffat there are still some things left hanging- have we seen the last few episodes in order? There are some oddities there still- the refrences to Henry VII being out of sequence- not to mention the new companion turning up as a Dalek! The Ponds may be gone but this is only the midway point in this series- I dont think the whole tale is over yet, just the Ponds part in it.

Re: Doctor Who [3]
Doctor Who has ruined me
See dust in the sunlight: It's the Vashta Nerada
Something in my eye: The Weeping Angels are in me
See a crack in a wall: Prisoner Zero has escaped
See a Roman Centurion: RORY
Can't remember why I'm crying: Oh god, I've forgotten my husband
See a ginger-haired person: THE ULTIMATE GINGE
See a statue: DON'T BLINK
Can't open a door: Crimson eleven delight petrichor
See fishfingers: CUSTARD
See custard: FISHFINGERS
See a bowtie: Bowties are cool
See a fez: Fezzes are cool
See glasses: Hello handsome
Someone made a soufflé: OSWIN
See a wheelie bin: MICKEY?
Go to a wedding: DRUNK GIRAFFE DANCE
Morning comes too soon: THE UNIVERSE IS SHRINKING
On a beach: And this is the story of how a died
The clock brakes: Run to the fireplace
Have to go to bed: but I COULD DO SO MUCH MORE
See a poncho: Peruvian folk band
See sunflowers: FOR AMY
Shoes: Always converse
Praying: Dear Santa
See a really fat person: Go get the vinegar
Accomplish something: WHO DA MAN?
Something doesn't make sense: Let's go poke it with a stick
Someone asks my name: STORMAGEDDON, DARK LORD OF ALL
Forget something: THE SILENCE
See a tally chart: THE SILENCE
Can't hear anything: SILENCE
See dust in the sunlight: It's the Vashta Nerada
Something in my eye: The Weeping Angels are in me
