Re: Doctor Who [3]
I am so glad you found some Who to love again Mrs Figg.
The wonderful Waters of Mars next, but it may be tricky to track down- I'll have a look.
- Spoiler:
- And that you agree the Doctor/Donna partnership is great, I know how much you liked Rose so high praise indeed from you. And its good to have a comapnion we can both wholeheartedly say 'she was brilliant'.
I was never a Rose or Martha fan really so Donna for me was always going to be my favourite Tennant companion.
Series 4 is largely superb- from Silence in the library on.
I dont like either the adipose or the atmos stories that open the series, I found them like much of the RTD era to be a bit dull, predicatable and to use his usual tropes- tv news reports, set in London, domestics ect.
And I have some problems with Stolen earth/journeys end- it has some of my favourite stuff in there- Davros revealing the Doctors soul (and great job of Davros, best Davros since the original) and the Doctor/Donna stuff- but there a fair bit of guff surrounding it to get there and not very engaging story in my opinion.
The whole lets just tow the earth back and its all fine is a typical pull a not very likely solution out the hat RTD trick which I feel plagues his run as head writer.
But even in the episodes I dont enjoy so much for plotting reasons I always enjoy the Doctor/Donna interactions.
The wonderful Waters of Mars next, but it may be tricky to track down- I'll have a look.

Re: Doctor Who [3]
ooh suprisingly I found it quite easily- watch it whilst its still there to watch- Tennant didnt do another series after 4 instead the follwoing tear there were a series of specials. Waters of Mars, a xmas episode, and easter special (its really by far the poorest of the specials, as in not very good at all) and the final two parter tat brings 10's run to a close.
Heres Waters of Mars.
Heres Waters of Mars.

Re: Doctor Who [3]
- Spoiler:
- After watching season 4, its amazing how dull season 3 was, well not dull exactly, but compared to Donna, Martha was a bit underwhelming. I did like the Shakespeare episode though very much. The only episode in season 4 I didnt take to were the Library ones. Although good, the tone was very different to the others. I found it a bit boring in parts to be honest, although I did like the bit where Donna tries to make sense of being in an unreal state with the girl in a veil.
I wonder why Catherine Tate left the series?

Re: Doctor Who [3]
Series 3 is a bit dull Mrs Figg.
- Spoiler:
- The only story I really enjoyed is the Family of Blood two parter when the Doctor beomes human, the end of it is quite heartbreaking too. I don't think they really knew what to do with Martha for most of it or how to develop her.
As to why she left, well series 4 is Tennants last series- he only did the specials after this before leaving so it would have been tricky to have a companion coming back just for those and it serves the story of the Doctor losing it in the lead up to his regeneration not to have a steadying human companion by his side.

Re: Doctor Who [3]
Mrs Figg
- Spoiler:
- There is a xmas special-its not very good sadly and is one of the things Moffat 'wiped' from Who history with the cracks in time, and quite rightly.
And there is a simply dull as ditchwater special inovling a double decker bus and a jewel thief (thing Catherine zeta jones in that terrible film with Connery) and not a lot else.
And then there is the two part xmas special where Tennant leaves.
Waters of Mars is generally considered a bit of a classic- but if you have only watched the opening you wont know why yet!
Im not so sure myself it deserves its classic status- the rest of the specials were pretty poor so it stands out, and its the only one of them thats 'important' with regard the way 10 goes and how his ending comes about.
I think those factors help people overloook the rather lacklustre characters on the base, the stupid 'gadget, gadget' robot and some other problems it has.
But the second half of it does go someway to making up for all that- there are some great moments in it to be sure (my problem with the RTD era in general really- full of great moments, but rarely entire great episodes).

- I would like to see the special where he leaves if you can find it.
I agree about the lacklustre people on Mars, its more a case of bad casting I think. the female captain is as charismatic as a beige jumper. I do like the story though, although a bit of the film Alien in influence. RTD is my absolute favourite writer for Who, he probably has one or two miss-steps like they all do from time to time, including Moffat

Re: Doctor Who [3]
- Spoiler:
- I think there are some things RTD era does very well, there is some great emotion in there. But often little sense or logic or real thought in the story.
For me really the perfect blend is Moffat and RTD- Moffat can do the better dialogue, the better stories and has the better Who knowledge, it seems to run in his blood- but RTD can be more human, and can relate it all back down to the everyday better.
I find a lot of the RTD era hard to watch now because of the patchwork nature of his stroytelling and that he often 'cheats' in stories to get out of them- something thats a pet hate of mine in writing.

Re: Doctor Who [3]
These epiosdes in my view contain all that was best about the RTD stuff (particularly scenes between the Doctor and Wil I love in this) and also everything that was terrible about RTD- instant resolutions, bad plotting, uninteresting characters and nicking wholesale and shamelessly from other films (mainly star wars for this one). And the last 15 minutes are so self indulgent even RTD fans find them self indulgent.

Re: Doctor Who [3]
OI! no dissing RTD or I will get the hump! and then I will just have to diss Moffat, and you really dont want to go there.
- Spoiler:
- One of the most ridiculous plot holes was when Moffat wrote the Library episode. He did not resolve the deadly problem of the Shadow killers, he just had the Doctor 'have a little word' in their ears. Thats just stupid. as if carnivorous piranah killers will not try to eat the people again once the Doctor goes.

Re: Doctor Who [3]
- Spoiler:
- Unfair comparison as Moffat was only a team writer then- RTD had oveall scripting control.
If you compare the two eras when they were Head Writers there is a different style of plot construction- RTD creates huge problems then just forgets about them or solves them out of left field- the episodes I just put up for Tennants finale are a classic example of that. And RTD 'borrows' elemnes more often from other sci-fi.
Moffat constructs his stories and leaves the viewer the clues to follow, same as Sherlock really.
I prefer that style.
RTD's Who is more 'down to earth' and so some things, the emotional stuff mainly, works better I think than in the Moffat era. But it also makes it a lot duller in many respects, very family and earth centred instead of 'all of space and time' and wild crazy adventures.
The difference for me is during the RTD era you hear the Doctor talk a lot about amazing planets and places but almost never see them- Moffat takes you there instead.
And I dont think I am dissing RTD just because I prefer Moffats writing style- I did say I felt a blending of the two styles, his and Moffats would be the best of all worlds- RTD's humanist approach and Moffats flights of fancy and tighter scripting would be a great combination.
