Re: Doctor Who [3]
Asylum of the Daleks got its press preview tonight and the BBC have released a series of pics, some stills from the first few episodes and some promostuff.
press reaction- spolier free reviews
The Telegraph gave it 4 1/2 stars out of 5.
Den of Geek said;
"Moffat spends some quality time with his lead characters. Particularly Amy and Rory, and how their relationship has developed since Christmas.
Which is as good a time as any to salute Karen Gillan, who gets better and better, and the underappreciated Arthur Darvill. Darvill is brilliant, whether as a generous comedic actor or as a core of emotion, and he’s on top form here. It perhaps goes without saying, too, but we’ll say it anyway, that Matt Smith utterly owns his role, and his ability to shift emotions in a split second remains a cherishable, rare talent.
It’s frequently funny – Moffat hasn’t lost his touch with excellent one-liners – and emotionally involving too.
Bottom line, and we'd better stop for fear of giving anything away, Doctor Who remains in tip-top condition, that much is clear. And as a kickstarter to what looks like a pivotal and massively ambitious series ahead, Asylum Of The Daleks is a very impressive way to begin. Congratulations to all concerned: it really is possible to continually evolve and subtlely change a show with such a long pedigree to it."
The Independent-
"Before Smith disappears into the clutches of hungry autograph hunters, the young actor who made the tweed jacket and bowtie look sexy is asked if will stick around in the Tardis. "I'm not an idiot," he said. "I'm not going to leave Doctor Who when it's in its biggest year."
Viewers are likely to reach the same conclusion."
The Guardian-
"As soon as the closing credits rolled, and the familiar music chimed in, Doctor Who showrunner Steven Moffat made his now-familiar plea to the journalists, fans and bloggers assembled not to give away his secrets. Once again, we'll be respecting that plea – because one of the things we can tell you is that Asylum Of The Daleks will have been worth the wait."
I am bursting with anticipation!!! Come on Beeb announce the bloody transmission date!!!! Stop toying with us:x
- Spoiler:
The episode names up till the xmas special have also been released.

Re: Doctor Who [3]
Moffat has dropped some strong hints at the press conference about the 50th anniversary special which will be screened on the day of the aniversary.
Moffat hates spoilers so if he's dropping the hints he probably wants us to know for his own mischievous reasons!
Moffat hates spoilers so if he's dropping the hints he probably wants us to know for his own mischievous reasons!
- Spoiler:
- David Tennant 'might' be returning for it.
This is not entirely suprising, the first anniversary show was the 3 doctors, then the next one was th five doctros, then the two doctors. Moffat also wrote the children in need short where 10 met Moffats personal fav doctor when he was growing up, the 5th.
It might not be suprising but it is

Re: Doctor Who [3]
- Spoiler:
- I watched a few episodes trying to understand why anyone would like the Rory character, and I dont get it. He seems to be as mopey and insecure as Mickey but without Mickeys spark. He is just beige. He is pushed by Moffat as somehow awesome but all I see is a whingeing nonentity who never stops whineing about being rejected by his girlfriend. He lets another man take control over her without much fuss. Talking about control Amy has none. she is married off, made pregnant, turned into a clone and then a robot and to add insult to injury abandoned when she reaches past her sell by date, with absolutely NO CHOICE in the matter. What kind of message does this send out? that women still dont have self determination, thats what.

Re: Doctor Who [3]
- Spoiler:
- I just cant see how you could think Mickey is a better character than Rory.
I just dont see it, there is real development with Rory. Real depth to his releationships, both with Amy and with the Doctor.
And the way in which both Rose and the Doctor treat Mickey is callous bordering on cruel at times.
I also dont know how on earth you could call Amy lacking in self-determination- its one of the strongest apsects of her character- she is self determined to the point of bloody mindedness.
Future Amy: Okay, Doctor. Two Streams is back on-air. Right, okay, so this is big news. This is temporal earthquake time. I'm now officially changing my own future. Hold on to your spectacles. In my past, I saw my future self refuse to help you. I'm now changing that future and agreeing. Every law of time says that shouldn't be possible.
The Doctor: Yes, except sometimes knowing your own future is what enables you to change it, especially if you're bloody-minded, contradictory and completely unpredictable.
Rory: So basically if you're Amy then.
The Doctor: Yes, if anyone could defeat predestiny, it's your wife.
Amy is one of the most proactive companions the Doctor has had. In the beast below she solves the problem, her compassion saves the day in the Dalek episode. She deals with the weeping angel incident with out losing it (River: You were brilliant!)- in fact there is a list as long as several arms of proactive decision making from Amy.
Nor is Amy married off- she chooses to marry Rory because she loves him- at the series start she doesnt really think its the right thing, not because she doesnt love Rory but she knows something is still missing, she will never be able to settle, marry or anything else until the problem of her raggedly Doctor is addressed.
Through episodes like Amy's Choice, the Silurian 2-parter and into Imp Astronaut, Amy comes to fully understand just how much she does love Rory- just as much as he does her.
I dont see how this is marrying her off.
She is turned into a clone against her will- but given that she is kidnapped thats hardly her fault- if you are going to say every companion who ever gets kidnapped and needs rescuing by the doctor is somehow undermining all women then thats every companion in Who history including Rose.
And I am unclear what you mean by abanodoned when she passes her sell by date. The Doctor never abandons her, he leaves them to have a life because he knows if they stay with him eventually one or both of them will get hurt of killed.
For me that Rose and Martha both fall in love with the Doctor was the predictable choice and the one that most reduced them as independent women- its like they were saying a woman cant both be around someone like the Doctor and not become weak at the knees and fall madly in love with him.

Re: Doctor Who [3]
- Spoiler:
- Amy is the most passive of the assistants, she literally spends her entire life waiting for men. She waits until in her 20s for the Doctor, she waits for him to save her when she is trapped and preggers, she waits for him when they are separated into young and older Amy. Is this not passive? I think it is. She has no control over what happens to her body, she is impregnated against her will, she has a kid against her will, she has her body turned into a robot, wooden doll, flesh clone against her will. Rose and Donna would have fought to the death rather than suffer such indignity. they were not passive.

Re: Doctor Who [3]
- Spoiler:
- In Amy' head the Doctor is not a man. He is her imaginary friend from childhood.
She has also, although she cant remember it, suffered continual loss throughout her life- and its all the Doctors fault. He is what ruins her life- his whole releationship is based on that.
In the Lets Kill Hitler Episode when the Doctor is dying and asks for the Tardis Interface this exchange occurs-
"Amelia Pond before I got it all wrong. My sweet little Amelia. Lets run away and have adventures."
But Amy is noway passive- yes she waits for the Doctor but when he does his usual, grab a stranger, tell them to run, and adventures ensue- Amy says no and traps him by the tie in a car door until he tells her what the hell is going on.
She is waiting for the Doctor but only because deep down she knows somehow he is the only person that can make some sense of her life.
In a later episode she says to the Doctor "My life doesn't make any sense". She has always had that feeling, she is not waiting on the Doctor in any romantic sort of way except in the idolised way a child might see the hero of a story.
Donna had her whole life with the Doctor erased against her will- Rose was trapped in another universe against her will.
I dont see why Amy should be singled out as committing some crime becuase she too got captured and was forced to do something against her will.
And whilst she had the baby unknowing she was pregnant, I dont think thats the same as saying she didnt want to have a child with Rory.
Just not like that as the ideal method.
Nor does she have her body turned into a robot- the teselector is robot that can imitate anyone- it imitates her- she and Rory are inside it.
And I dont see how Amy being turned into the doll is any different than when the tv sucked Roses face off. Or when Donna ended up with her face on a statue.
The Flesh clone is her conciousness, her mind in it like an avatar. Its not against her will as she doesnt even know it is happening so she could hardly fight it.
She waits on Rory at Demons Run, not the Doctor.
Amy: There's a man who's never going to let us down. And not even an army can get in the way.
He's the last of his kind. He looks young but he's lived for hundreds and hundreds of years. And wherever they take you, Melody, however scared you are, I promise you, you will never be alone. Because this man is your father. He has a name, but the people of our world know him better... as the last Centurion.
And to not wait would be to abandon her own daughter as there is no way to get her out against an entire army.
There should be sympathy for Amy- her whole life has been manipulated by forces she was not even aware off- but she has not just accepted them as you seem to think, she has taken what life has handed her and she has determindely said, "Fine. If this is how its going to be then I am going to do this- Ill not be a victim anymore. It will be on my terms.

Re: Doctor Who [3]
just popping in ^^ your discussion about amy and rory and all makes an interesting reading. I con't have time to discuss (I did see the old/young amy ep) but I'm backing up Petty. I love Rory and how he is written, and I don't think amy is passive. She just isn't as BAMF as donna or rose. which is fine, because everyone is different.
Re: Doctor Who [3]

How do you get an airmatress under your chin?
And Eldo shouldnt you be watching Who/ Then we could have your input on the Amy/Rory debate.

I've been watching a different show with my brother (although it has a couple Who references in it ) so that's been taking up much of my interest in TV watching but I might watch some more. We'll see.

Re: Doctor Who [3]
I agree with norc about personal preferences paying a large part in how I see Rory. He is a decent, loyal person and that is something I have always valued, above a lot of other characteristics.
In fact Anne in Jane Austens Persuasion is my favourite heroine of the authors and she does very little that is proactive in her life, but lives it simply to the best of her ability. Many consider her the most boring or worst of the female leads in the austens work for these reasons, but the integrity and steadfast nature of her character really touch me.

I disagree, I think most people dislike Fanny Price in Mansfield Park the most. She is a passive prig of epic proportions. I think Anne in Persuasion is a wonderful character, and is mostly 'guilty' of loyalty to a family friend over following her heart. I dont see Anne as passive really, more an innocent who is swayed by a parent figure, and thats pretty reasonable seeing as her father was a vain fool.

I dont know what the storyline is, but this image is the dated cliche passive woman in need of rescue.

Its for the season opener Asylum of the Daleks.
As part of the anniverary thing and the season theme of a 'blockbuster' every epiosde its supposed ot be in the style of sci-fi movie posters from the 1960's.
