I dont think he could do it and get away with it- they cant show them preparing for a joint birthday then not mention it at all in FotR .
And I dont see them reshooting the necessary scenes for FotR to insert, apart from anything else it would need a redo of Bilbos speech.

Yeah, I have the same concern about it being out of place compared to Fellowship if PJ chooses to go this route. Of course, if he does, then it would provide another reason for him to go full Lucas and release a revised version of the LOTR trilogy to bring it closer in line with The Hobbit, as some people would like. That's purely speculation at this point though.

You know, I'm not sure if I would mind that...(revising certain things) Only if it was done to bring it the trilogy more in line with the book (which I know would be a deal breaker as it would require far too much work).
But if possible maybe Balin's death could be redone. Maybe I'll actually feel something during that scene. If done well, that wouldn't be so bad. It is relying on quite a few "ifs" though and that's troubling. It probably won't happen anyways.

I suspect that if PJ were to do something like that it would be to incorporate material and design elements from The Hobbit rather than the books, but one never knows with PJ.

Either I missed it first time round or its only in this vid but they are talking about being in the barrells covered to over their heads in real dead fish- and then you see loads of fish being tipped as if from a shoot into the barrels and over the dwarves in the barrells- why would the elves be sending barrels of fish to a town on a lake exactly?
