Re: Doctor Who
Ok Eldo you asked for it!!!!
Why you should watch Doctor Who-
To not do so only highlights the fact that deep down you are in fact American.
Capable only of seeing the surface of a thing and to only appreciate glamour and success and to only use force not intelligence.
Doctor Who watching is a benchmark not just for intelligence but for humanity. It seperates out those with an apreciation for the deeper truths and who enjoy things with tentacles that can talk from those whose daily diet of drama is satisfied by soap operas and Jerry Springer and giving money to God, who has a US post box.
Doctor Who is not a parochial program it is a point of view, a better way of looking at life and what constituets it, its as silly as Alice in Wonderland and as dark as all of space and all at once, its complicated yet does it through the medium of stories children can enjoy. Its genius is in saying things to all of society at all levels at once.
Its a test of being human. To not watch Who is to be less than human, it is to reduce the available sum of pleasure in the universe to deny yourself Who. And only a fool would do that.
To reject Who is tantamount to saying when the end of the world comes you are only good for spare parts.
But to be a Whovian is to indicate to the world you are more than a cog in the social mill. Your mind is your own and it is dreaming. And as a Whovian you get to live in the certainty that no matter what happens, out there, there is all of space time and somewhere, a mad man in a blue box.

Re: Doctor Who
Never Mrs Figg, never! But you do suprise me- obviously you are free not to enjoy it (Only Eldo is not allowed that ) its just I frequent Gallifrey Base where Doctor Who fans spend all day saying how awful everything is (its what they do) so I've heard every crit going of Nu Who- and I think you are unique in that particular conclusion. Goodnews is of course if you do feel that watch some Tennant Who, or Baker (either) or McCoy, or any of the other 11 incarnations of the Doctor. (They can't all be lacking charisma to you!)

Re: Doctor Who
Eccleston has charisma in bucket loads, so has Rose. and Freema and Sally, and even Tennant. This recent lot dont hold a candle to them. that current girl has something quite false and brittle about her, her husband is a no mark, and the Doctor is a yawn.

Re: Doctor Who
Well Mrs Figg such is the nature of Who it is only a matter of time until he regenrates and he is getting new companions next series too. And in th emeantime you have more than 40 years of Who to choose from! (Althugh I would urge yu watch the episode The Girl Who Waited befre coming to a conclusion on Karen Gillan. Others can speak for Rory- he has a very large following.

Halleuja, brother!
I haven't seen any episodes or clips yet as I try to avoid spoilers, but I hope the new Doc will grow on me. I got sad the first time I saw there was a new Doc and I still don't feel too eager to meet him. But that said, I wasn't over the moon when Tennant arrived and now I love him, so only time will tell. And I miss Donna Noble.

Re: Doctor Who
I liked Donna too- her ending (before they brought her back in the finale momentarily) was heartbreaking and powerfully acted.
Smith says of the Doctor "he has to tell jokes, be childish, wear a fez. He has 900 years of selfish decsions behind him and the blood of family, friends, whole planets, his entire race on his hands- its that or he'd hang himself."

Re: Doctor Who
Its strange cos I went into watching the new Who expecting to be instantly smitten and I went into it with an open mind, expecting the characters to grab me like they always have, but no I just dont get it, what was worse was that for the first time ever I was bored and switched over. The plots look interesting the sets great everything was there but the magic. weird. I miss Rose and her vividly alive and cheeky spirit.

Re: Doctor Who
Imp Astronaut is a bit like starting in the middle- more so in regard Amy and Rory- to get them I think you'd probably hard to start at 11th Hour where they are introduced. Hard for me to tell as I watched them in order as they aired.

Re: Doctor Who
Each to their own I guess! (But you leave my Rory alone!!!!!!!)
Thought Ecclestone was okay, Rose too, although thought the falling in love with the doctor just too cliche. For that reason Martha frustrated me (Love Tenant, but then loved tenant since Cassanova!) Donna was better, but the one on one began to feel old. Love the fact that there are two. Agree you need to see Amy and Rory's whole story to get it. And Matt is now, totally the doctor for me. Has a lot to do with the change in leadership for me. Although I enjoyed it before, I always felt a little like I'd been cheated at the end of a series as RTD pulled something you couldn't really have been expected to see out of his bag. With Moffat I always end up feeling like it makes sense and I could have seen it if I'd looked at it right!

Re: Doctor Who
The Eccleston Who is a bit too kitchen-sink for my liking, to much a soap in some ways. Tennant I liked but like Kafria RTD's writting left me feel cheated most of the time. For me Smith is perfect. And Amy and Rory the best companions since the relaunch- they have so much more depth and are so much more rounded as people than th eaverage companion ever is. Its very much an ensemble performance on the Tardis and I like that (reminds me of the Davidson Doctor's years).

Re: Doctor Who
I have watched older episodes out of sequence and I still got that instant Dr Who magic, its like slipping into a well worn and loved old jumper, its comforting and familiar, it smells right, the wool has remembered where your elbows go, this new Who was like a shiny acrylic scratchy uncomfortable jumper and it made me want to take it off and chuck it in the bin. weird.

Re: Doctor Who
Well if it doesnt work for you I suppose it doesnt work. But I'd still urge starting at 11th hour- perhaps more than most Whoo there is a running narrative in characters and story from when Smith took over to current.

Re: Doctor Who
Meant to aks Mrs Figg- did you watch any of the shorts above?(1st one is spoiler heavy if you didnt see Rivers first episode with Tennant -and some spoilers to do with the Doctor and Rivers releationshiop after the end of series 6, but to bad- middle one is the least spoiler heavy- last one is not good if you plan on watching from 11th Hour as it contains spoilers about it)
