Re: News from the set [2]
Sorry to break in on the hate-fest, but didn't the trailer look cinematic enough? I'm totally talking out of my posterior here since I course haven't seen the clips under discussion, but the problem doesn't seem to be with the 48 fps or the 3D, as the reporter said the helicopter shots looked fantastic. I think it's the lighting, which they will fix digitally, just as in LoTR. These are not amateurs we're talking about. If you've seen shots of the rushes in the extended edition appendices, it all looks cheesy at first.
It's the other things that we need to worry about, starting with that dratted ax-head.

Re: News from the set [2]
I am not bothered yet about the look- they will sort it or not, I think not. There was some interesting comments on one of those pages from people that seemed to know about cameras and film, and the reason is looks like a sharp version of a BBC1970's production is because the result is similar to the sort of cameras the BBC were using then- so its probably not a coincidence two reviewers got that specific impression- nor am I sure that it is somethng which can be 'fixed' as it seems to be an inherent property or shooting this way.
My main gripes are with the content described which sounds horrific.

Re: News from the set [2]
I think these guys they invited to the screening would be 'experts too, they are probably chosen from film critics that know all about the differences between production and post production values. I think from what I gather its fundamentally going to not look cinematic on purpose, it will probably look more like a war documentary with hyper real and video like effects, that weird grainy warts and all effect we have seen on some new films, on Bourne Identity its great, on the Hobbit it sucks eels in the hot place.
That critic said he was continually drawn OUT of the story and could not immerse into it, thats f-ing bad news for a fantasy film.
ooo sorry for all the f-ings, but it really got my goat this did.

Re: News from the set [2]
Well the footage was unfinished and I'm sure that it will look better after post-production. However, I'm pretty sure the trailer was in 24 fps, so we can't really use that as a comparison for visual quality.
I'm still more concerned about the apparent content of the scenes, anyway.

Re: News from the set [2]
Maybe they're trying to keep some of the children's story aspect of it after all? I haven't read or seen the latest news myself, and I don't think I will, now that I've seen your reactions. In fact, I will try not to watch or read too much about the film before it hits the theatres, as it seems all news is bad news recently

Re: News from the set [2]
The problem here ia that this is likely to be a huge success just based purely on the LotR films. That means it is likely we will see this kind of film making trend continue for a while until, like dodgy 3d, people get fed up of it looking shit and stop going.
I hope PJ and co take some feedback from these people they invited and do something about it if it really is that bad and it really is the look they are going for. So far, 3d has sucked... lets not make everything suck!!

Re: News from the set [2]
3D is crap and it gives me nosebleeds. The only good film I have seen in 3D was Tim burtons Alice, now that was fantastic, really beautiful and lent itself perfectly to 3D effects being about a Wonderland and all that weirdness, the Cheshire Cat effects were brilliant, really made me happy and going oooooh! kind of thing.
On the other hand the Deathly hallows was so dark and dingy in 3d you could hardly see anything and the effects seemed stuck on as an after thought, and you really noticed them, I was kind of sitting there waiting for the effects instead of watching the film, not that I missed much it was so boring.

Unless there's a strong reason for 3D it should be avoided.

I would be interested to know if Chris or someone could dig out any positive reviews about the screening, just to get a balanced view, before I smash my I PJ mug

Re: News from the set [2]
I never liked the look of it, ever since the trailer. I know that that was 24 fps, but everything still looked fake to me. Too fake. One of the best parts of the LOTR films is the realism of it all! Everything looked so real even though it was CGI, and the trailer for the Hobbit looks more generated than something made a decade ago! COME ON PJ!!!!!!!!

Oh Gawd oh Gawd oh Gawd... PJ thinks Tom Bombadil and the Barrow-wights fit better in the Hobbbit than in The Lord of the Rings... oh Gawd oh Gawd oh Gawd oh Gawd...

Re: News from the set [2]
I dont want to feel I am actually there, I just want the beautiful painterly aesthetics of LOTR, I want to be emerged into Tolkiens magical world not a war docu, I have lost all interest in this film, its starting to bug me.
Thanks Chris, that chick didnt seem to give any worthwhile information, I think the other articles you posted were probably nearer the mark.

True to form, TORN did not post any of the reviews, just referred to a live chat session with their reporter which seems not to have been recorded!

Re: News from the set [2]
The awfulness of this makes me want to weep- this is from the screened footage-
- Spoiler:
footage of Gandalf meeting with the Elrond (Hugo Weaving) and Galadriel (Cate Blanchett) as well as the white wizard Saruman (Christopher Lee) about a grave discovery he has made — a Morgul sword, made for the witch king of Angmar. “Buried with him, when Angmar fell,” Galadriel said. “And sealed deep within the rock, in a tomb so dark” it could never be opened again.
Well, so much for that plan.
We then see Gandalf visiting said tomb, a kind of vertical mineshaft with caged crypts that have been ripped open. This is the tomb of the witch kings, seen in The Lord of the Rings trilogy as the black, spectral wringwraiths. In this tomb, Gandalf meets the brown wizard, Radagast, played by Sylvester McCoy, who has three little birds who live under his hat — and occasionally drop poop down his beard. (This is where the HD really pays off, people!)
Radagast seems to have arrived there against his will. “Why am I here, Gandalf?” he asks in a whisper. “This is not a nice place to meet.”
“No,” Gandalf agrees, peering down into the abyss. “It is not.”
Radagast examines some etchings above one of the tombs. “These are dark spells, Gandalf — old, and full of hate. Who is buried here?”
“If he had a name it has long since been lost,” Gandalf replies. “He would have been known only as a servant of evil.”
I'm guessing the morgul sword will be in the troll hoard

My favorite part of TORn's non-response was their summary of the footage:
But what about the tidbits that were revealed in the 10 minutes of footage?…
- The White Council featuring Saruman, Gandalf, Galadriel and Elrond.
- Riddles in the Dark with Smeagol and Bilbo
- The Trolls – Tom, Bert and Bill – all with dialogue!
- Gandalf in Dol Guldur with Thrain
- Legolas and Tauriel in an action sequence and a tense threat to Thorin!
- Radagast the Brown in a bit of comedic glory
- more…
Oh TORn, you try so hard to make PJ look good.

We should have a contest: best imagined version of troll conversation in the PJ universe.

Re: News from the set [2]
I dont think we are getting talking trolls as they are in the book, I reckon are ToRN are masking the truth here- the impression I get is of trolls a few sylabbles up the chain from grunting. And that it becomes a big fight is despretely predictable. No popping of dwarves in sacks- and what about Biblo saying to the kids the Trolls were arguing over them and what best way to cook them? Will that be retained if its a big fight?
