Norc wrote:oh, you're in the middle of it all! though it is said that it will loose power as soon as it hits shores, so maybe it isn't that when it reaches you. I hope my friend from class who is taking a year in Virginia is okay... Where's Florida? is it there somewhere?
Yeah, I think it's lost power. The sky is still overcast here -- we haven't seen the sun since Saturday -- but it stopped raining (except for a drizzle) after about 24 consecutive hours. About 300,000 people lost power in Maryland and at least one person here has died but the recovery is going pretty smoothly. Virginia should be okay too. Florida is much further south so it's not on that map.
NYC, on the other hand, got legitimately slammed.
Re: Tales of Home [1]
The major damage to New York was from storm surge, which incidentally would have been minimal if we had a direct hit but since we were to the north we got the winds from the west that pushed the waters straight up the harbors.
Can't go inspect the damage since the subways are flooded at the southern tip, and I have my doubts about riding a bike that far in the still rather strong winds.
After the 1992 blackout all cables were buried and secondary generators were installed, so other than a flicker as power switched from the cheaper generators out in the country to the more expensive ones on site there were no losses to anyone sufficiently far from the shorelines.

Re: Tales of Home [1]
I thought that Lower Manhattan completely lost power after the sub-station explosion? That's what the WSJ is reporting, anyway.
Either way, I'm glad that you're doing better in your neighborhood.

I saw a tv documentary about NY city, and by all accounts underground there is a huge network of 19th century steam pipes that work everyones heating and stuff, if water gets in these tubes it must cause a huge problem?

Re: Tales of Home [1]
Yeah, lower manhattan was hit hard by storm surge, but the waters have receded leaving a mess behind. Much power went out down there and it may be a few days before all that gets dried out enough to start the juice flowing again. Water was 5 feet deep above ground in many places!
I'm up on the ridge of northern manhattan, barely experienced a thing. A lot was learned from the 1992 blackout, so the grid is very adaptive. I had a chance to sit down with the top engineers from the power company not long ago to see if there was much to be done to harden their system against storm effects, and couldn't see that there was anything to be improved in the inner city. Floods are rare compared to wind and lightning damage above ground, just have to wait for the tunnels to drain (seems already done) and dry out.

Re: Tales of Home [1]
It's great to hear that you're doing well. I hope you're well stocked up with food.
Re: Tales of Home [1]
Just have to last until any one of the 4 grocery stores within walking distance reopens. The bridges are scheduled to reopen tonight, so the trucks will start rolling.
Okay, seems quiet out there, I'm off to inspect local damage. I already know our satellite antenna got knocked out of position.

Tops of a couple trees got blown off, there's a big puddle at the bottom of the hill that never drains properly anyway, but the grocery stores are open and if not for the lack of public transit you wouldn't know a once a century storm blew through last night.

Re: Tales of Home [1]
You hope its a once in a century storm! Unless of course the Mayans are right, in which case it will be, but you might have preferred the hurricanes.

Since the storm a grand total of 9 arrests have been made for looting in areas with power outages. For New York, all is calm.

Re: Tales of Home [1]
Wow, I was expecting a much higher number. I'm glad to hear it. I know the police in Maryland have been worried about looting too but I don't know how many arrests have been made.
Re: Tales of Home [1]
I think it helps that southern Manhattan is a posh area and there's no public transportation to get there!
