Re: Tales of Home [1]
I very rarely eat cranberries directly (I prefer raspberries and blackberries), but I'm a big fan of cranberry juice.

Re: Tales of Home [1]
If memory serves right cranberry and turkey is a traditional part of a Thanks Giving Meal isnt it? In which case must be a busy time of year for you Dave.
You can buy both cranberry jelly here and cranberry juice- we use a lot of the latter in the care biz, as Mrs Figgs points out its good for the plumbing (and taster than prune juice).
Dont think anywhere in Europe grows it though as all the stuff Ive seen here is made in the US- probably as it turns out on Daves Farm!

Not only gentle, Mrs Figg. They have a very strong antibacterial property from point of entry to point of exit. Cranberries have been shown to reduce infections from the gums through the whole digestive system (reducing ulcers for example), to the .......

They are a little different from lingon, but one is a good substitute for the other, like lemons and limes. A lot of American Norwegians, Swedes and Finns use cranberries instead of lingon in their old-country recipes.

There actually used to be a small patch of American cranberries near Perth at the Highlands and Islands University Agricultural Research Station (or something like that). Cranberries grow in peat bogs, so they figured it was worth a try. They grow pretty well in Scotland, but they never convinced anybody to plant them.
If your buying Ocean Spray brand, some of it could be my stuff. OS is a grower co-operative, so the company is entirely owned by the farmers. Our family has been in the co-op for 3 generations. It's a pretty cool way to farm, really!

Re: Tales of Home [1]
I'm pretty sure that we buy Ocean Spray from time to time, actually! I'll have to keep an eye out for it specifically next time I go to the supermarket. A grower co-operative is definitely something I'd like to support.

Re: Tales of Home [1]
Another hurricane update from me. I stayed up late to enjoy having electricity since there's a chance it won't be here when I wake up, but I really do need to go to bed now even without school in the morning. It started raining for real in the past few hours. My fingers are still crossed that it doesn't get too bad.

not in the wild I think not.. But it's not that uncommon. I believe poeple have them erm.. more south. not much but arctic plants grow naturally here x) so i dunno, but maybe Mrs Figg is right, maybe they don't exist in europe. But europe is large

wild raspberries <3 and blueberries, though what you call blueberries doesn't exist here. What we have is what you call huckleberry.

that's so cool, that stuff like that survive. I saw a program on the telly, Alt For Norge, it's about norwegian-americans coming to norway and competeing by doing norwegian things and so on and learning about the culture (hell, I learned a lot! really interesting to see yourself from another point of view) but the thing was, one of them had grown up with the knowledge of trolls, though she had no idea that they were in fact LARGE! like mountains, because the trolls she had on her mantelpiece was cute, small souvernir trolls
Re: Tales of Home [1]
like the Troll in the film "Troll Hunter"? I like that quirky film, "Rare Exports" was another quirky Scandinavian film. This series is Icelandic but, "Naeturvaktin" (Day Shift) was funny,

Re: Tales of Home [1]
Thanks Petty. I still hope the power will hold out but the trees are already blowing around a lot so it seems rather silly to think that none of them will fall on the power lines at any point. It'll be down to sheer dumb luck if it hits our lines or someone else's, but since we're at the end of the line it's more likely to hit us.
That said, so long as the old maple tree in our front yard doesn't hit the house I don't have much to complain about.

Re: Tales of Home [1]
Look on the bright side, if it does fall youll have maple syrup for your pancakes- assuming it doesnt smash your kitchen to pieces of course!
But do stay safe Eldo, apart from anything eles you are the only one that actually knows how things work around here.

Re: Tales of Home [1]
Thanks, Petty. I'm hopeful that we'll be able to cook anything. Our stove in the kitchen is gas-powered but it's a new fancy model so I'm not sure how much of it is dependent on electricity.
And I'm sure you, Orwell, and Amarie could figure something out in my absence. My room is in the back of the house though so I'm unlikely to be hit by falling trees.

Re: Tales of Home [1]
you was more worried about loosing electricity than your house being smashed by a giant maple tree?
you need to sort out your priorities ;D
