Ive put these pics in spoilers so I have a chance to warn certain members (Norc mainly) that they contain images of Mr Cumberbatch in just his trunks. I dont want to be reponsible for any sudden fainting fits (or any other sort for that matter!). So consider yourself suitably fore-warned.

The image of our dear Norclet stunned into collapse by the sudden reveal of reality in its full unadorned glory will keep me cheerful for the rest of the afternoon.

but back to the topic at hand: I haven't seen the original office. I think the American version is pretty good (unlike the execrable Coupling). Do the Brits have a low opinion of the Americanized office as well?

The US version of The Office is ok taken on its own but not in my view a patch on the original- I think its becasue Americans likes a winner whereas Brent in the original is just cringeworthy and repulsive and such a loser. And I preferred the office romance story in the UK version too. PLus the UK version had the benfit of only 2 short seris and a couple of specials to wrap it up- it was neat and self contained and so to therefore was the narrative. Thats my take on it anyway Halfwise.

The English one was pitch perfect, the deadly monotony and petty(sorry) backbiting of a provincial office was quite hard to watch it was so true to life. The office romance was genius thanks to Martin.

I've heard variations on the theme of Brit 'heros' versus American 'heros' before, but I forget in what context. It was along the lines of in Britain a guy who manages to outwit the system and get by without doing much work is looked upon with favor while in America there's a puritanical mindset against it. Not quite what you were referring to, though.

The main character in the American version is also a pompous loser, but somehow Steve Carrel transforms him into a guy you still find yourself rooting for. I think I shall have to rent the original version for comparison.

Halfwise I think its about winners and losers- Americans like success and winners, Brits like losers. Most of our comedy greats are complete losers as characters. It goes right back, you had Hancock and Steptoe and Son in the 60's, both miserable losers. The Likely Lads, one of them becomes a success but its just a source of mockery and derision, its the loser layabout the audience affection is with. In the 70's you have Terry and June, he's a put upon loser. George and Mildred, both losers in their own way. Man about the House- the whole show relys on his inability to ever have a hope with either female flat mate for its laughs. Rigsby in Rising Dmp is another, Ronnie Corbett in Sorry. Rik and Neil in the Young Ones are another classic pair of losers (and Rik and Ade in Bottom are hopeless losers)- Black Adder of course, classic loser with style. Red Dwarf- Lister is a complete loser and revels in it and then Brent in the Office- also a complete loser with the joke being he doesn't know it.
We tend to view sucessful with supsicion, Americans the opposite.

I think rooting for the underdog runs deep in the British psyche, from Shakespeare's Bottom to 'Dad's Army' in the 20th century, we see the pathos and the pain, the little triumphs and the joys all the more keenly. We do like Heros, but normally after they have died painful slightly absurd deaths, like Scott of the Antarctic.

Not too sure about that there. In one of the stories 221B has a visitor who to prove he's not to be trifled with bends a fireplace poker. After he leaves, Sherlock picks it up "and with a sudden effort, straightened it." Sounds pretty ripped to me.
