Re: Tales of Home [8]
4 glasses of stout, 2 of milk, 1 of orange juice is supposed to cover it. Let's do the math (this means there are other things I *should* be doing instead).
milk(2c) beer(4c) OJ(1c) totals
calories 600 600 160 1360 calories
protein 62g 5g 2g 69g
A 10% 10%
B6 8% 50% 4% 62%
B12 36% 36%
C 0 120% 120%
D 48% 48%
E 2% 2%
Thiamin 14% 15% 29%
Ribo 52% 52%
Niacin 2% 2%
Calcium 56% 56%
iron 0% 0%
Phosphorus 44% 28% 72%
zinc 7% 7%
magnesium 0% 8% 8%
potassium 18% 18%
Well, clearly what I heard referred to pints, not cups. But there's still a lot missing here. My sources claim beer has lots of B vitamins, but only quote B6 as the highest, so the other B's should be higher by a bit. I also think beer would have niacin and thiamine.
EDIT: you may have to display more than once it this site often goofs with white space formatting.

Re: Tales of Home [8]
No Buckie-drinking competition? Suspiciously absent!
We're having a heat-wave over here in the land of sun and fog. No fog right now, just lots of sun! Still in the 70s hours after sunset (it normally cools off fast after sunset, something to do with the ocean nearby and the dry climate), and it looks like some places around the bay will be hitting 90s and over 100 tomorrow again.
One of the old goats had heat-stroke. Had to give her electrolytes and, to help cool her down, hold freezer packs on her ears. Seemed to help, I guess. She got up on her feet after an hour or so of it, but maybe she was just tired of me icing her ears!
Edit: I like how several of the games are, "Hey here's something ponderously heavy, let's take turns throwing it!"

And now there was nothing but the roofs of houses, sweeping along like a great torrent of stones and rocks. Chimney-pots fell, and tiles flew from the roofs..."

No Buckie-drinking competition?- Forest
{{{What do you mean? Its everywhere you look!!! Its the Games, everyone over the age of 13 is competing in the drinking competition. That's what all the buckie tents are for dotted all around the stadium and the the Ceildh tent. Then there's the street drinking competition (tricky one that due it being illegal), the underage drinking competition, also illegal but with less harsh punishments- that one's always over subscribed but its got a higher fall out level than the adult competitions. Then there is pub drinking and randomly claiming strangers to a fight competitions and the final competition of the night getting home, performance vomiting and not not ending up ankle deep in an over crowded cell which smells entirely of buckie and urine. }}}

I'd think this couple should win first prize in their age group.
http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/2017/09/01/pensioner-runs-naked-hotel-out-of-control-rampage-wife/
http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/2017/09/01/pensioner-runs-naked-hotel-out-of-control-rampage-wife/
After his wife complained that staff had been hostile to her, 72-year-old Robert Fergus ran entirely naked through the MacDonald Loch Rannoch Hotel, in Perthshire, on a drunken "out-of-control" rampage.
Staff and guests were forced to flee in the early hours as Mr Fergus smashed a glass pane and used the scissors to cut communications cables, before warning witnesses he would "slit" and "kill" them.
His wife Ruth, 69, also threatened to "get a gun and shoot" a staff member after "reacting badly" to alcohol she had drunk without having eaten much food, Perth Sheriff Court heard.
The court heard that Mr Fergus appeared in the hotel reception without any clothes and began shouting abuse at staff and guests during the incident, on February 4.
Fiscal Depute Michael Sweeney said: “Both accused were acting as if they were out of control, He was observed to have a pair of scissors. Mrs Fergus said: 'I'm going to get a gun and shoot you'."
Ewan Cameron, representing Mr Fergus, ..... told the court his client had "consumed much more alcohol than was sensible" and reacted "disproportionately" when he confronted reception staff.

Re: Tales of Home [8]
So I've known for a long time that there's a cookie brand in the UK that shares the name of my state (supposedly the recipe was brought from the US to the UK), and I've even eaten some that my stepmom brought back from one of her business trips (they're pretty decent; tasted a lot like Chips Ahoy), but I've never actually heard a Brit say the word "Maryland". But tonight I found myself wondering if they pronounce the word the same way we do and, well...
aaaaahhh it's so weird
"merry land" cookies
fffffuuuuuuuuu
okay so these are pretty weird for a variety of reasons but yeah

Re: Tales of Home [8]
And for those who don't know the name of the state is pronounced mare-uh-lund (sometimes slurred/shortened to just mare-lund) with the emphasis on the first syllable.

Re: Tales of Home [8]
Update: I have now learned tonight that the reason I usually pronounce Maryland differently than the official dictionary definition (mare-lund vs mare-uh-lund as noted above) unless I'm consciously trying not to is because of the phenomenon of schwa deletion in conversational American English in which the schwa sound (roughly "uh") in the middle of multisyllabic words gets dropped. Which is also why I usually pronounce separate* and camera with two syllables. I'm not sure how to feel about this.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Schwa#American_English
http://isli.khu.ac.kr/journal/content/data/30_2/8.pdf
*Though only when using it as an adjective; as a verb it has three syllables and rhymes with "gate". I have no fucking clue why.
EDIT: Though looking through the charts in that second link there are some words that I don't shorten. Cultural, therapist, and veteran all still have three syllables when I say them (among others). This is really messing with me now.

Re: Tales of Home [8]
What's really weird is they are calling them cookies. Brits don't do cookies. They do biscuits. Which of course is all wrong, but never mind that. The point is, they may be in the midst of a shift in nomenclature.

Re: Tales of Home [8]
{{ I dont think so Halfy- we tend to only use the word 'cookie' to refer to US products, or something which is specifically labelled as 'cookie'. Such as the Maryland ones above or Orios. We also use cookie to refer to large flat 'biscuits'- but everything else we still call biscuits. And there is no 'cookie' section in our supermarkets, they are sold in the biscuit section. }}}

{{On a terminology note Cookie is stupid- sorry US. Biscuit comes from the French and it literally means 'twice cooked' because originally making biscuits was a two stage process. Cookie on the other hand derives from the Dutch meaning for small cake, and should properly refer only to cakes not biscuits. }}}
