Was Norway *not* in the EU? I wasn't aware.

Halfy - we're not in the EU, but a part of the EEA agreement. If you're interested, you can read more about it here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/European_Economic_Area

Yeah, Norway still isn't, but the newer coins show (more or less) the entire European continent instead of just the member states of the EU.
Re: Tales of Home [7]
An EEA coin

The EEA agreenent basically means were part of the free trade area the EU compromizes. The internal market, if you will.

Re: Tales of Home [7]
I was remembering I haven't told a bear story here for a while, so here goes....
It's coming on to July 4th and we're a mile from a beach, so there are starting to be cars we don't recognize showing up-- cars that don't necessarily have the proper respect for wildlife.
The day before yesterday a white Subaru Outback was driving on the main road about a mile from here. The speed limit is 45 mph so everybody usually drives 50 mph. The Subaru was cruising along thinking he had the road to himself when a black bear shot across the road in front of him.
If the Subaru had slammed on his breaks like most people do, the nose of the car would have gone down with the deceleration, and the bear might have ended up in the radiator or windshield. But cluelessness saved this particular driver. He had no idea he was hitting a bear until his 4 wheel drive vehicle was going over the top of the bear!
He drove completely over the top of the bear with both axles, pulling over to panic stop on the side of the road and called the State Patrol. Meanwhile the bear shot off into the woods like....well like he'd been run over by a car at 50 mph and lived to tell about it.
The Dept. of Fish and Wildlife called in a tracker to see if the bear was injured and needed help. He found the trail but no sign of blood. They never caught up with the 'victim' who was probably in the next county by then. The tracker said he's seen bears total a car and sustain no obvious injuries
No doubt about it. Bears are tough!
And I guess, so are Subarus. I doubt you'll see this story on the commercials though...

Re: Tales of Home [7]
Apparently someone thinks hes damaged his front paws & thats why he walks up right. Poor thing ! Cant he be tranquillised & see if a vet can help him ??? You can see his paws give him problems.

I watched a few seconds of this Az (took me a couple minutes. ) I'm pretty sure that one font paw has been badly injured and deformed for a very long time. I suspect this guy was found injured somewhere and has been rescued. The good news is that black bears are quite comfortable walking on their hind legs. They do it all the time when they want to look around. Where a bad front paw is the greatest handicap is when they're wanting to run (they're normally amazingly fast ) and when they need to rip things apart looking for food (they can be amazingly distructive ).

Re: Tales of Home [7]
Yes Dave, his paw does look deformed. Seems a shame but, he is coping somehow. Once hes on all 4s you can see him struggle.

So I got my ticket, and here is the place nearby I suggest for the Forumshire meetup: http://www.theglobeny.com
Could likely fine some place even more Tolkieny, but this is just a short walk away and will do.

Looks like a neat place, halfy! The location couldn't be better. Too bad I won't be there on a Tuesday for the Irish folk music jam.
I finalized my travel plans last week so I'll be arriving in NYC a little after 4pm on Friday. Would Friday or Saturday evening work better for you?

Normally I'd say friday night is better so my weekend is free, but I'm going to the Tolkien thing supposedly, so it doesn't matter. Unless the weather looks ungodly great for hang gliding and I want to skip out on the afternoon session.
But let's say friday because we may meet people in the seminars we want to go out with afterwards, and it's best not to complicate that process with other plans.
I'd go for 6:30 to give you time to explore after arrival, and still catch the tail end of happy hour. We definitely want to avoid the big crowds that come later for dinner. But if DJH checks in we can rearrange to suit his schedule.
