Re: Tales of Home [7]
Um...the machete-as-tool clan is sort of a born-again evangelical group. Nobody understands what we're about at first; but if you ever find yourself with some brush to clear, and somebody rushes up all hopeful-like with a machete, presses it into your hands and says "the trick, you see, is is slice down, not across!", then you know somebody is trying to induct you as a new convert. We're used to being looked at like loonies, so desperately hope new candidates will come to realize the thrill of a sharp machete correctly used.
Many people have tried machetes and dismissed them simply because they never think to sharpen them. All too often we just get the squint-eyed look, accompanied by "naw, I don't think so." And we have to slink away sadly, hoping to pass by some sapling that we can off-handedly slice through with a single stroke, thus gaining multitudes of new admirers.

Figgy, if you want to chip in on this with me, Keith Richards is selling his New York apartment; I'm sure it has two bedrooms.

Re: Tales of Home [7]
My step-mom took an Easter-themed photo of the chicks today. They're looking a little gangly and are only half-feathered at this point but I think they're still pretty cute. The yellow one seems to be establishing herself as the boss chicken, though they haven't been properly introduced to our two grown ones yet.

Re: Tales of Home [7]
How did she get a bunch of bird brains to pose like that? I seriously think that easter pic could go viral. She should post it somewhere.

Re: Tales of Home [7]
You don't have to worry, azriel. They're egg-laying chickens, not for eating. Not even after they stop laying; I don't think any of us could bring ourselves to do that.
Not sure about how she posed them, halfy. They're pretty chill and don't seem to mind being picked up in general though. Plus they like to roost. She put the pic on FB cause some coworkers of hers had been asking about the chicks.

I'm sipping maple bourbon from Vermont, and re-watching Murder on the Orient Express. Halfie is happy.

And though his present character has no relation, I'm again reminded how perfect Sir John Gielgud would be as Denethor. A shame the movie wasn't made a decade earlier.

Re: Tales of Home [7]
Watching John Gielgud I realized I really knew nothing about him (!), so looked him up. This brought tears to my eyes: (Wikipedia)
On the evening of 20 October 1953, Gielgud, usually highly discreet about casual sex, was arrested in Chelsea for cruising in a public lavatory. Until the 1960s sexual activity of any kind between men was illegal in Britain. The Home Secretary of the day, David Maxwell Fyfe, was fervently homophobic, urging the police to arrest anyone who contravened the Victorian laws against homosexuality. Gielgud was fined; when the press reported the story, he thought his disgrace would end his career. When the news broke he was in Liverpool on the pre-London tour of a new play, A Day by the Sea. According to the biographer Richard Huggett, Gielgud was so paralysed by nerves that the prospect of going onstage as usual seemed impossible, but his fellow players, led by Sybil Thorndike, encouraged him:
She grabbed him and whispered fiercely, "Come on, John darling, they won't boo me", and led him firmly on to the stage. To everybody's astonishment and indescribable relief, the audience gave him a standing ovation. They cheered, they applauded, they shouted. The message was quite clear. The English public had always been loyal to its favourites, and this was their chance to show that they didn't care tuppence what he had done in his private life ... they loved him and respected him dearly. It was a moment never to be forgotten by those who witnessed it.

Re: Tales of Home [7]
Ingrid Bergman is blowing my mind. To go from Casablanca to this mouse of a missionary - of course Albert Finney is an equally astounding transformation. It's a shame that we typecast our great actors : they have so much to offer if allowed to roam free.

Re: Tales of Home [7]
Your quite right Halfy Do we seem to think these people are actors & only actors ? They act in a film, go home till the morning, then, act again & thats it ? How many do good things, amazing things, with their lives yet we know nothing of it.

Re: Tales of Home [7]
Actually I was just talking about how we often only see them in typecast roles, and don't realize how good they are playing outside their type.
But some, I assume, are good people....
