- by Missy, they generally call it a Confession Dial- I think the confession is the important bit, the death thing the red herring here, Moffat subverting the expectations of his own tropes. It fits with the games he likes to playing his writing. What is the Doctor confessing too? Killing Davros? Saving Davros? Or the other obvious something he is up to?
Generally getting good press reception, Telegraph being the harshest (weirdly their spoiler free premier review liked it a lot more, but perhaps tellingly it was a review of the first two episodes, not just the first one) and it seems to have worked for the majority of fans of Gallifrey Base on current figures- 7, 8 and 10 being the most common score given
10 Fantastic! The absolute pinnacle (excellent/10) 225 23.73%
9 They don't get much better than this! (excellent/9) 256 27.00%
8 It's certainly worthy of very high praise! (great/ 257 27.11%

Well in fairness we often end up Norcing the forum by discussing Who in other threads

Personally I don't think we should place too much faith in the opinions of fans, Doctor Who may have been brought back by fans who grew up on it as a cult show, but it is now a worldwide phenomena, and casual audiences are its bread and butter, despite my issues I listed above I did enjoy the ep alot...but I'm not convinced this would be a story that the general public would warm as quickly to.

ok I watched it. unmitigating dour misery. It started dark and horrible had a truly cringeworthy 'jolly' bit in the middle, and then went back to soul destroying dreary weary poop. what a load of depressing tosh. where's the joy? come back RTD and save this show.

I think all you needed to know regards classic was clearly explained, the rest, the screens with flashbacks to classic Doctor/Davros confrontations ect was just icing on the cake for the fans.

Joy or Lameness? Personally I found that scene overlong and cringeworthy, how did the Doctor never realize Bor was a Dalek in disguise?...and apparently he's totally fine with stealing, driving around and leaving tank in the middle ages with no consequences?

Mrs Figg wrote:where's the joy? come back RTD and save this show.
In fairness I wouldn't classify Who as a particularly joyous show, the Phillip Hinchcliffe years for example, generally considered to be the best in the shows history seemed to be geared around the idea of scaring the shit out of as many kids as possible and killing off as many extras as they could afford every episode.
You don't cast an older actor known for darker roles and expect him to play a bouncy approachable puppy...frankly I was bored with the Doctor being so 'human' and happy all the time (one of the reasons I've changed my opinion on Tennant...he's very watchable and charismatic as a leading man...but also rather boring from a character point of view, and disappointingly one note as an alien), he's a 2000 year old alien, I'd be annoyed if he didn't act a little darker and melancholy from time to time.
Why would RTD come back to a show he quit voluntarily over 7 years ago, after admitting by his own admission he was completely burnt out. You may not like Moffat's take on Who (and to be fair...I don't either alot of the time) but regressing to a tone and style of show a decade old will do the show no favours, RTD's family friendly soap esque character drama was fine for relaunching the show in the UK, but's its far outgrown his reach in tone and scale.
Trying to repeat what made the show work in the RTD years, by hiring him to try and repeat them would never work, he'd essentially be competing against himself...and we all know how that turned out for Peter Jackson
The show is never going to match the tone of RTD's years not matter who is in charge of it, and it a show all about change I'd be dissapointed if it did, I surprised you still bother to watch it, I tuned out entirely during Series 6 and most of 7, and I don't regret it...

'Personally I found that scene overlong and cringeworthy'
I started out with stunned incredulity and disbelief, and as it went on a huge grin just crept across my face. This is a rare time when we get to see a side of the Doctor we have heard about plenty over the years but never seen- all those ridiculous parties, usually with famous people he goes on offscreen and occasionally mentions in conversation, playing with famous bands and composers, hanging out with Hollywood celebrities of the 1940's and 50's ect
As to the tank- presumably that was one of the major anomalies associated with the incident that made it a hot spot for the algorithm.

Exactly, being random and quirky just for a few cheap laughs is lazy writing, this story is hinting at the Doctor's moral dilema for killing/not killing Davros creator of the daleks...and what does he do casually steal and drive around a tank in the middle ages for no reason other than to make a few grandad esque 'jokes'
The electric guitar was funny (and apt as Capaldi was in a rock band in his youth) though.
The true joy in this episode was when the Doctor hugged Clara, Capaldi is a much more subtle actor than Smith or Tennant, and overblown showboating or obvious attempts at being 'quirky' don't fit with his Doctor.

Re: Doctor Who [11]
I dont think it was done just for cheap laughs, but also for laughs. It was showing how the Doctor was reacting to the event the story is about. He hides from his own shame by basically going on a bender for 3 weeks.
Its was also an excellent way of bringing the three main characters together, in that it was both humorous, and the music choices the Doctor played in regards to them were narratively telling in themselves.

- Spoiler:
- the whole episode sucked Dalek balls and talking of balls I wasn't too keen on the ball stroking going on. for a kids show that's disgusting.
I found the Majors daughter as bland and bleating as normal, totally useless woman in charge of UNIT. and since when did Clara become the cocky go-to-person when the world is in danger? she managed to find the Doctor fannyed about a bit and then got zapped. thank goodness but isn't she the Impossible Girl with a million lives? she cant be really dead because another one will just pop up to replace her. as for the Doctor, all this boring crapola about his Last Day fake drama. I wish IT WAS HIS LAST DAY, regenerate into someone interesting please. more dark and dreary stuff with no let up. meh.

Agreed (though I actually agree with some of Figgs points)...though it's kinda fun to see you two argue
Figgs have you watched Classic Who at all?
Another thought...isn't it kinda convinient Missy can somehow tap into and control every plane on the planet yet being bonkers made and willing to commit genocide at the click of her fingers...she dosen't

yes. I have watched all classic Who since I was 3 years old and although I only really remember from Tom Bakers stint onwards, I went off Who during Davidsons era. couldn't stand him.

Re: Doctor Who [11]
the true joy in this episode was when the Doctor hugged Clara- Malick
That was beautifully played.
I also thought Clara's scene at the restaurant table with Missy was very good, even if Clara did fade out the main story a bit into the background towards the end as it focused more on the Doctor and Missy and Davros.
Also some incredibly good dialogue, in particular I loved the Doctor's "How scared do you need to be to encase every member of your entire race inside a tank?"
I've quit watching technically 4 times- the first was not for long, 3/4 of a series I think- stopped a few episodes into 5's run. Then I stopped again during six, tuned back in to see some of Mcoys first episode and promptly left again. And then I stopped once more during RTD and 10's era, and came back for the end and the new Doctor.
Eventually went back and saw everything I'd missed for continuity and for completionist sake.
That was beautifully played.
I also thought Clara's scene at the restaurant table with Missy was very good, even if Clara did fade out the main story a bit into the background towards the end as it focused more on the Doctor and Missy and Davros.
Also some incredibly good dialogue, in particular I loved the Doctor's "How scared do you need to be to encase every member of your entire race inside a tank?"

yes. I have watched all classic Who since I was 3 years old and although I only really remember from Tom Bakers stint onwards, I went off Who during Davidsons era. couldn't stand him.
I haven't seen much of Davidson's era yet, he's a good actor but his Doctor strikes me as the slighty wimpy boring older brother who can't control his younger more interesting siblings and leads them into danger when the plot requires it...
