From where I live you can almost always see these two aerial surveillance blimps that are tethered in Aberdeen Proving Ground (a big military base in the area). One of them broke free this afternoon and made its way north into Pennsylvania before being downed. Along the way it passed over Amish country:

The BBC and USA Today both have amusing videos about it.

Well, fjordlandian media is labelling it a "billion balloon".

So, at least I assume it was cheap.

The program has cost like $2.7 billion so far and it didn't work as a detection system against aerial threats in the DC area (didn't detect the gyrocopter dude for instance) even before one of the blimps broke free in winds that were less than a quarter of the strength the cable was supposedly rated for.  There was a big story about the money sink in local media recently.

Some people think the blimps are a privacy concern and are snooping on people's comings and goings in the area, but I think that's kinda silly, because the military already has satellites that can do that perfectly well.

Still not as bad as the F-35 though. Razz

Yeah, don't get me started on the F-35. Rolling Eyes Biggest waste of money in fjordlandian history.

The only sad thing about seeing people you've missed is that when they inevitably go off again you get you to realize just why you were missing them so much in the first place all over. Sad

That's not to say it's not worth it though. Smile

Ah, yeah, I certainly get the feeling of being snowed under, and you did seem a little overwhelmed last time you were on. Glad to hear things are looking up. Smile
