Re: Tales of Home [6]
I am afraid I have to say Azriel I preferred your bit of town in its past than its present!
Is the promenade much the same now?- here at least its probably the bit of town that has changed the least since Victorian times.

Oh man ! So many people have complained that Eastbourne has lost its "olde worlde" feel ! The planing council here are mindless shits ! On face book there is a good forum of Eastbourne how it used to be, & so many people post on how lovely it once was. The main bit now that has tried to keep non modern as much as possible is The Old town ( where I am ) & people here certainly do voice an opinion if a trader wants to build say a Tesco !! I LOVE the old Eastbourne, but, what can you do ?

Re: Tales of Home [6]
The Prom hasnt changed too greatly, we have what is called " the carpet gardens" which is bed of flowers laid out along the prom for about a mile, always looks nice & attracts coach loads of incontinent old gentlemen & ladies. Summers are noisy & over populated because of coach loads of tourists but also foreign students or rather their overloaded backpacks have brought the students with them The surrounding countryside here is stunning tho & if you can drive its so lovely to get out of town

Re: Tales of Home [6]
love old fashioned seaside towns, they are a weird mix of melancholy and innocent entertainment. Scarborough is the same, its got a high Victorian feel to it with the majestic hotels with sweeping staircases of mahogany, then its got the old fishing village nestled in the harbour with kiosks selling shrimps and crab sticks. the seagulls wheel overhead with their mournful cries, but the sea is there spead out like a silver field, theres the salty tang and the seaweedy rockpools. its a bit down at heel and the seafront is full of bingo halls and slot machines. its great.

This is the Furford Cranberry Picker-Pruner, invented locally in the 1950's and still produced in a little shop with a small cranberry museum alongside.

At last, a plant picture from Dave without suspicious genitalia!
I hope the harvest has gone well though, Dave. I usually get Ocean Spray when I'm in the mood for cranberry juice and it always makes me think of you.
Edit: just saw the pictures on this page; I wanna visit the cranberry museum now.

Re: Tales of Home [6]
Was out and about yesterday after work, was another suspiciously lovely day for October
Ended up at the Cot House- which is the name of an Inn at the head of the Holy Loch.
Sadly it had been closed for many years and had begun to fall into a state of disrepair when it was bought anew and is almost now finished its refurbishment, which is rather cool as its good to see it survive, I dont know if its too small to read but on the sign it tells you when the Inn was established- 1623
Its a nice scenic spot and has a small caravan park attached and some chalets to let.
And just beyond those, if you know where to look, you will come upon this almost secret entrance-
which in turn will lead you out onto a solid but no longer used bridge over a river-
this is known locally as the Little Eck, as it flows out of Loch Eck a few miles away and into the Holy Loch not far beyond the back of the Inn.
Opposite the Inn, and across the main road is a low lying area at the base of the glen further up which lies Loch Eck.
The ground here is very wet a lot of the time, and the type of trees and the way they grow here is how I picture the land around the Withywindle on the far edges of The Old Forest-

Re: Tales of Home [6]
Found myself hanging about outside work waiting for a lift today, so took some snaps- they are taken with the zoom lens, hence the graininess-
A swan being a swan-
The Gantocks Lighthouse (sadly no seals as the tide was high)
A wind-turbine on the distant horizon, a lot of folk complain about them saying they blight the landscape, personally I love them and think they are rather beautiful to watch in motion-
That one is however rather big, most are nowhere near this size- to give you an idea of its scale here it is with some shipping cranes in shot-

Harvest Report:
We've now got just over 30% of our acreage harvested and probably a little over half the berries in and shipped. At this rate it will all be picked and put to bed by about 10 Nov, if the weather holds, we stay healthy, and nothing breaks. :
It's at the point where each day follows the next and the rest of the world ceases to exist. If I hadn't just looked at a calendar this morning I'd have had no idea what day of the week it was (It's Sunday, right?)
And so we go....

Yes. Good on you with the Harvest, Dave. Must be exhausting. Exhausting, but rewarding.
You know, thinking about it figuratively, I guess we all harvest

Thanks everybody! Petty, I've been working my way slowly through the Who 50th quadrilogy and extras on evenings I don't fall asleep directly. Very nicely organized by the way!
