Re: Doctor Who [9]
I was trying to remember who the whole glasses routine of the bank-proprietor reminded me of, and then I got it: Miss Foster from Partners in Crime.

Re: Doctor Who [9]
I dont know if its because Im tired but, I dont think I know what to say about tonights episode ? A few smears reminded me of...
- Spoiler:
- "the architec", Oceans 11, Mission Impossible, Saibra was like Mystique from X-men, Psi reminded me of Orlando Bloom a tad, I did like the Monster, he was like a mind zapping Minotaur, but, Ive seen this sort of "long lost love found again" before ? Matt smith era ? Fancy that the universes most secure bank could so easily fall open to a storm ?? I love Capaldi being the Dr, Im wondering if I like the stories he's written into OR is the person writing them to blame ?:

Didn't see the end coming. Wonderful.
I have now watched 5 Episodes in a row -- I didn't see that coming either!

Re: Doctor Who [9]
I think Capaldi deserves some really great stories, at the moment he is being hobbled by mediocre stories. He has the potential to be fantastic. I like the way he wonders why Claras face has got colours on and does she need to reach a tall shelf. its great stuff, but the actual plot is a bit meh.

Re: Doctor Who [9]
Yup Orwell, another thoroughly enjoyable episode. Fun, good supporting cast of interesting characters and plenty of twists and turns.
frankly I don't think this moved Capaldi's character on any further.- Malick
frankly I don't think this moved Capaldi's character on any further.- Malick
- Spoiler:
- I couldn't disagree more with you there Malick. We learned a lot about 12 in this one. Including the answer to the question 'Am I good man?'. He is the sort of man who will put his own life, and even others at risk, to save a species from extinction. He is a good man, but a do what it takes man too.
Also his 'everybody lives moment' he at first reacts to with suspicion and disbelief, and then a wonderful joy when he gets to give each of them the one thing that they wished for, that said so much about 12.
Not to mention doing all this and putting himself in the firing line a the end to save a species, you dont get more Doctor than that for motivation.
We even got to see him telling jokes and socialising in the TARDIS over a chinese meal with his new friends.
High points for me- loved the Teller being a full prosthetic and not cgi, worked brilliantly having it there physically on set and looked excellent, very expressive too.
Caved in heads bound to stay with the kids once the lights go out! Great Who body horror moment.
Lovely shots throughout, even if they did have to do the old recycle the corridors by having different lighting trick- was worth it if the rest of the budget went on the Teller as it was a great piece of work.
Loved all the interaction between the Doctor and Clara, just great together those two.
"Are you taller?"
"I'm wearing heels."
"What, do you have to reach a high shelf?"
"Got to go, I'm going to be late."
"For a shelf?"
Not a remarkable episode by any means, but it didn't do a thing wrong either. Was simply a good solid fun Who take on the heist film genre.

Re: Doctor Who [9]
Now Ive woken up a tad I think this new Dr does have a flavour of old Drs that I was used to. Capaldi has the aroma of Hartnell about him. I think this last episode had that fragrance of the 60s about it

Re: Doctor Who [9]
- Spoiler:
- The thing I most like about Capaldi is not being able to pin him down and his not being exactly predictable, though nothing he does, once he's done it, seems out of character. I think we can owe that to his competence as an actor.
Every episode is quite diffrent too, which I like.
I am a tiny bit perturbed about 'Paradise' going missing - though it won't bother me if we never find resolution for that. I can live with mystery.
I loved the fact that the Doctor rescued the tellers - didn't see that coming, but very Who in my opinion.
In 'Listen' the fact that there was no monster in the end was satisfying - but brave for a show where people want their monsters.
The Robin Hood golden arrow idea I like the more I think about it. This was a far fetched Errol Flynn Robin, remember, not a historical dramatic Robin. ('Robot' Hood is ahint, surely!) A bit of gold scratching in contact with the flyng machine as extra fuel - conduction of some kind? - ridiculous, still yet barely plausible - and in this epsode the barely plausible always ran supreme.
I liked the Dalek being bad but his hate being directed to his own race - that's plausible - rewired but still essentially a hater. The Doctor being a good Dalek! Loved that. (Is the Master essentially a Dalek? He is a hater, you know).
The idea that the clockwork man in the first episode killed himself as a noble gesture of sorts - though that is not absolutely proven.
Every episode has ended in a way that is not predictable and that pleases me, though nothing unbelievable happens either (once disbelief if supended, of course - this is still Who afterall).
I admit I have had moments where I thought episodes might be going in a certain predictable direction and I was worried things might get ho-hum, but every time things happened that were not expeced but still made sense.
I was concerned about the two extra sidekicks in the Heist episode dying so quickly - but when they reappeared, I thought wow - didn't see that coming!
I was still hanging on who the The Architect would be, fearing it might be a recipe for disappointment - but then it turns out to be the Doctor planning to save a species and not steal treasure. And the Doctor's first reaction to the Architect? He hates him!!! Brilliant.
Everything is so typically obviously traditionally Who - but is it as obvious as one thinks? I think the writing is easy to enjoy but begs one to think a bit more deeply if one wants to - mainly about who Who is. He clealy has a lot of former Doctors churning away inside him - that seems the one consistency in him - and they keep popping up for those who have eyes to see, I feel. Grumpy and hard-edged like Hartwell, spoon playing like Troughton - need I go on?
And though there is no sexual romance between he and Clara - nonetheless, there is a spark which I can only see as romantic. If this Doctor was a younger vesion - or a less honourable older version - a proper romance would definiely be on the cards. They certainly are attracted to each other, but the writers are keeping that at arms length, which I don't mind at all. Not because of the age diffrence, but because it's unfair to both if romance blooms too much. Clara will die. The Doctor will go on. I've had enough of that kind of thing with Chris, David and Matt. Also, there is a bt of a Father-Daughter thing going on. Being the Father of a Daughter, I can relate.
Clara is smart, brave, fun, and falling in love - which is the kind of heroine I like. Loving it.

Re: Doctor Who [9]
Well, I got around to seeing the whole thing. Thought it rather good, best this season to me.
I still don't think they've cracked the kind of episode that would best utilize Cipaldis talents yet, but, with the current setup, if they do it could be very good.
There's certainly potential in the show these days.

The voted for lists tend to be a bit skewed in the direction of the audiences awareness, I tend to think. Interesting to see those two Tom Baker episodes in there though. Not that it's surprising. They are really good, probably the best of his tenure, if not all of classic Doctor Who.

Mm, looking at the Guardian list- they have Sea Devils rated higher than City of Death!
Nice to see Happiness Patrol in there though,, an underrated story in my book- yes it has a giant Bertie Bassett sweet monster in it and i s more camp than a national scout jamboree but thats the joy of it, it all looks ridiculous on the surface and underneath its a deeply subversive piece about Thatcherism.

- Spoiler:
- ok finally an episode that was pretty great. I enjoyed it a lot. The Doctor is finally in his skin and motoring along nicely. The Danny/Clara relationship is grown up and deep, and real. such a fresh change from the past couple (who cannot be named ). it was a flimsy story when you boil it down, but it more than makes up with the characters Learning to trust each other. Loved Dannys ''He's your alien dad'' thing. It was a very enjoyable episode.

I agree. I'm going to watch the whole series again when it finishes to see if - now that I've grown used to the new Doctor - the first episodes will feel slightly awkward or not. I'm suspecting maybe not. I always liked Clara but I think she's truly shining now.
