{{At this stage we have no idea how they bring him back or if its sum elaborate ploy he set in place before he died. Doyle had a similar problem after he brought Homes back from the dead, he never did manage to find another suitable replacement for Moriarty- how could he when he had already created the perfect foil to Holmes intellect?
Doyles solution, in as much as he ever managed to come up with one, was to throw in Moriarty 'henchmen' as replacements for a while.

just focus on telling a good story, not topping everything that came before...just good story-telling for crying out loud - it's all we asked of Doyle and all we ask of Sherlock.- Halfy

I think thats precisely what we got in the final episode of series 3. It follows the same writing format of the best fo their Sherlock like Scandal or Pink- it takes an existing Doyle story, mixes things up a it, throwing Watsons wife into the mix in the role more or less originally taken by the main female character in the original, tough that role is also partly given to the female government minister who is being blackmailed and gets Sherlock involved, throws in a few long term story arc items of their own-Holmes childhood dog, Janine, ect- and alters the ending from Homes and Watson covering up a crime to Homes committing the crime- shooting the blackmailer dead.
This is the exact formula they have followed when dealing with Doyle stories all along. }}}

I would be perfectly happy not having a supervillain pulling the strings in the background for a while. If we must have one, though, I'd rather someone very different because all of Moriarty's interesting qualities (to me) were exhausted a long time ago. If you want to seriously "challenge" Sherlock as a character in interesting ways, why not have a villain who forces him to look at himself through a lens other than intellect?

{{You coul argue that all the stuff relating to Sherlocks childood and his og, which has not yet been fully explained, was challenging him on a basis other than intellect, and for all we know it is in tis direction and oin this theme they may proceed, using Moriarty, or the ghost of him or whatever they do, to get to it.
I also would prefer n general just Sherlock as a weekly crime sho basically, with each episode based on a Doyle case, but then I have the Brett version for tat perfect recreation, I dont think thats what Sherlock is aiming for. Its also been more about whats going on inside Sherlocks head than other versions, being the first for the very start to show us is thought process through onscreen annotations }}}

they ruined Moriarty in the Christmas special thing the Abominable Bride, they turned him into a joke. No more Moriarty please. if he turns up its going to be like the Weeping Angels turning up every season just because they were popular. I want good old fashioned crime solving story without the fan service fannying around..

If you think that that was the reason they brought him back nin the christmas special then you have totally misunderstood the episode. he was brought back because he is the symbol of sherlocks repressed sexuality, and also his biggest fear.. which he and john together conquers at the end because it is always these two Smile

{{{Not as much as it might seem. Personally I think Moffat and Gatiss are putting a subtext in that allow for it to be read this way, whilst leaving open a surface readng too which never directly addresses the matter.
In terms of is it the sort of thing Moffat would do, well in Who the characters of Madame Vastra and Jenny are supposed to be the real life couple upon whom Doyle based Sherlock and Watson. And Vastra and Jenny are a married same sex couple.  }}}

Oh, I didn't know they were a couple outside of the show.

More importantly, Season 4 comes out on New Years??

I mean, I'll still have to wait about 10 years over here in the U.S. to see it, but that's exciting.

that's a really childish thing to say, Figg, as if the producers and the actors aren't professional enough to leave their private life aside when doing their job. I bet Martin Freeman and Amanda Abbington worked just as any other two actors on set, and the reason it's too "domestic bliss" is all due to the writers (although I disagree here, i think the writer actually try to trick us into liking Mary when she's not a likable character at all, which we will see in series 4, if we didn't already pick up on that in the last episode of series 3 and the Christmas special, or in hindsight realized what an awful and psychotic and narcissistic character Mary Morstan is) and not due to the fact that they were a real-life couple. Also, we know nothing about why the broke it off, and sixteen years together is a long time to be together. Let's not jump to conclusion and hope that the split wasn't one of the ugly ones and they both and their kids have a nice christmas.
