I was going to say that if any thread needed the infusion of some sillyness it was "The Bigger, Badder, Even More Serious Thread," but now I see Petty and Figgs argument was already quite silly.  Laughing

Hey our arguments are never silly! Well hardly ever, well sometimes. But only on Figg's side!!  Twisted Evil

Actually, I listened to this today and it reminded me a bit of you and Figg.

Knew it was the Goons long before I got to the bottom! - there is no mistaking them, even when written down! And a nice sly play on Dickens too.

But Mrs Figg and I's arguments are not silly! They are finely honed and tuned crabbit dances that have been performed between the inhabitants of this island since time immemorial.
What that boils down to is its all Mrs Figg fault- for being from the north of England where they breed them resilient and hearty, up for a scrap at the drop of a flat cap and sarcastic!  Mad
Whereas I, being from the west coast of Scotland, am drunk, permanently crabbit, and come from a society where how much you like your neighbour may well depend on which team they support, which is obviously proper and sensible.  Nod

Oh, thought it encapsulated the two of you rather well. Very Happy

But I'll drop my point about your arguments being silly. If not it'll only lead to another argument, and that would be exceedingly silly.  Laughing

Been holding off commenting on the whole Russian/Ukraine/Crimea issue.
But after listening to the case today from all sides it seems to me that the West morally is defunct in these matters.
The West is full of shocked outcry that Russia has invaded a sovereign state and much derision that their claim to be doing so to protect Russian civilians smacks of Hitlers reasons for invading Czechoslovakia.

But the West invaded Iraq and Afghanistan, sovereign states and we did so with many an excuse of protecting civilians, protecting women and children's rights ect.
Morally we dont have a leg to stand on here any more. Blair and Bush have seen to that.

And on the Russian side they have more close ties with Crimea, historically and in the number of Russian speakers living there than we ever had with the countries we invaded.

Its funny how often it reoccurs that when 'we' do such an act its an act of good and largess, and when someone we dont like does it the same thing its an evil act.

It would do, but the word that was actually in my mind was George Orwell's 'Doublethink' which is the same thing but more sinister.

(Talking of which where is Sin these days?)

the major difference is that Putin is waving his nuclear warheads around and doing this because he doesnt want to lose power in Ukraine and that area. The US and UK invaded Iraq and Afghanistan for completely different reasons. Neither good but on the face of it one seems like willy waving (Russia) rather than trying to stomp on people that want to blow us up.

Iraq didn't want to blow us up, and neither did the Taliban (who offered to give up bin Laden, but the US didn't like the conditions they wanted).

Yeah we used just the same sort of tactics and just the same sort of excuses, and it was all underneath for the same reasons- to secure favourable conditions for ourselves (not that it worked too well) and to consolidate power favourable to us in those regions.

But the main problem is we did it in violation of International Law and Treaties and without any legal consent from the UN- which leaves us pretty empty when someone else does exactly the same thing and makes our cries of 'But he's breaking international law' seem pretty hollow.

"Al Q wanted to blow us up with their underpants and shoes, thats all I need to know."- Mrs Figg

We didnt go into Afghanistan and topple Al Qaeda, we went in and toppled the legitimate sovereign government of the country, the Taliban.

Plus your statement reminds me of a line in the satirical right wing radio show in GTA4 where the host says of liberals pointing out all the evil stuff the government is doing in the name of democracy that "I dont want to know what they are doing, they are doing it right!"
