That clip really does capture the current mood of this thread! Sometimes I worry we have groupthink occurring here, and influence eachother too much into the Way of the Crabbit.
Groupthink is always a possibility on forums, but I'm more concerned about the vitriol towards people with differening opinions. I think we did a good job last year when there were (at first) fairly divergent camps over AUJ, but unfortunately it seems that people on other forums are considered open targets.
I've tried to do my part to discourage this and lighten the tone of these threads.
Re: Critics review 'Desolation of Smaug' | POSSIBLE SPOILERS
Might be spead out over several scenes, but I'm guessing it still takes up a lot of time.bungobaggins wrote:http://www.boston.com/ae/movies/2013/12/09/review-new-hobbit-breathes-fire-into-trilogy/1eSVgIPujve80rADie7GLJ/story.htmlIn any case, it all comes down to the climactic confrontation with the dragon; Unfortunately, the film sags somewhat here. It’s fun to hear Benedict Cumberbatch, as Smaug, hurl seething epithets at Bilbo, and Freeman is at his most pluckily adorable. Still, they really could have shortened this confrontation by a good 20 minutes.
How long is this scene going to be exactly?

It's a motto I try to remember when debating with anyone. Attack a point, not the poster making it.

Fjordian review: http://www.dagbladet.no/2013/12/10/kultur/film/filmanmeldelser/30755861/
She rolled the dice and gave it 4 out of 6. I haven't read all of it (don't want to read any more spoilers), but one of the comments made me laugh
"Hvis det er samme berta som anmelder denne saken som fjorårets film, skal jeg ta dette med fire trailerlass med salt. Flaueste jeg har lest."
"If this review is written by the same chick who reviewed the previous one, I will take it with four truckloads' worth of salt. Most embarassing thing I've read."
She also manages to call Benedict Cumberbatch Benedick. My new favourite nickname

So should we call you Benedick now?
(Only misunderstanding for comic effect. )
I shared NRKs review above, and it was shockingly positive. As was VGs. But I don't think either mentioned the book with a word. It really makes you a bit embarrassed on behalf of Norwegian movie reviewers.

Well, we gave Obama the Nobel's Peace Prize, so a few positive reviews to Peter Jackson is to be expected, I guess

Re: Critics review 'Desolation of Smaug' | POSSIBLE SPOILERS
Oh, but didn't you know Nobels will said "in the last year." They had just discovered that that year, and forgot it the next.
It's mostly that they all seemed so caught up in the hype and so unaware of the books. And if we judge by the quality of AUJ, there's shouldn't be much reason to have that view.
So are the people commenting mad she gave AUJ a bad review?

Making exceptions undermines the whole point of it, though.

Re: Critics review 'Desolation of Smaug' | POSSIBLE SPOILERS
I bet Mr Rogers would find something nice to say about DOS.
Re: Critics review 'Desolation of Smaug' | POSSIBLE SPOILERS
It would probably be about all the talented people on the project and all the hard work they put into it. And their ability to do their best to give people something that they can enjoy, and something that they know people will enjoy.
He probably wouldn't like all the violence, though.
