Expect characterization of a made up character, though.

Re: Critics review 'Desolation of Smaug' | POSSIBLE SPOILERS
This sentence seriously makes me want to punch something. When Thorin and company flood the dragon with boiling gold is a moment of pure triumph. Smaug is drowned in gold. And for a moment, though you know the time isn’t right, you’re wanting to feel that they won, that he is defeated…

This clip describes the feeling quite nicely.

COMPLETELY AGREE!!!!
I wouldn't pay attention to any reviews on sites like TORn which are pretty much (not all) Jackson worshipers that have been brainwashed into thinking he knows best because the staffers at TORn all think sunshine flows out of Jackson's ass because he gives them exclusives.
Anyone who thought covering Smaug in liquid gold was a good idea is a FUCKING MORON

Yeah, something like that
I feel dumb getting all worked up about it, but I feel these movies really shouldn't even exist.

The fact that they are making Smaug so infinitely defeatable should tell people everything they need to know about him not being the main baddie in these movies anymore. More like an incidentiary character really.

I read that as "incendiary" Bluebottle and was going to say, no pun intended eh?
That clip really does capture the current mood of this thread! Sometimes I worry we have groupthink occurring here, and influence eachother too much into the Way of the Crabbit.
Hope Petty doesn't see that...

Well, he's certainly incendiary. Therein lies not the problem. More that his role is pushed further and further into the background and made less important.

Re: Critics review 'Desolation of Smaug' | POSSIBLE SPOILERS
The "Fili" review is pretty dumb. Who is she writing it for? The spoilers, of course, give everything away, but if you've read the book (or even if you haven't), you pretty much know Smaug is not going to be defeated by molten gold (an idea which never should have been seriously considered in the first place). Outside of the ludicrousness of the idea, it's otherwise a cliché fake death that should fool no one who's ever seen a movie, let alone any readers of the book.

How long is this scene going to be exactly?
In any case, it all comes down to the climactic confrontation with the dragon; Unfortunately, the film sags somewhat here. It’s fun to hear Benedict Cumberbatch, as Smaug, hurl seething epithets at Bilbo, and Freeman is at his most pluckily adorable. Still, they really could have shortened this confrontation by a good 20 minutes.

Norwegian national broadcaster gave DoS 5/6.
This is from a very populist reviewers though, and they didn't mention the books with a word in the review.

Out of 6?
Is that a common Fjordlandian rating scale?

Re: Critics review 'Desolation of Smaug' | POSSIBLE SPOILERS
This TORn review made me want to puke
'Except, it turns out, for one. I didn’t know what to expect from the rumors of Tauriel and Kili having a romance, and was even more unsure about Legolas being thrown into the mix, but the more screen time Kili and Tauriel had together, the more I adored them. The two are opposites in many ways, the most obvious being their races, yet through their conversations, they not only form an attachment to one another, but change each other. When Kili tells Tauriel how he promised his mother to return to her, Tauriel is forced to look beyond any prejudice and see him as a being with hopes and dreams and family. Her admiration for him helps her see through the isolationist ways of King Thranduil, reminding her that she is just as much a part of the changing world around them as the dwarf who has a mother waiting for him.

It will be a fucking Christmas Miracle™ if I don't walk out of the theater before the movie is half over.

Yeah, here they have for some reason decided to use the dice as a scale. Ignoring the fact that a dice throw is rather arbitrary.
But it seems to represent well the seriousness of the art of movie critiquing. Well, at least in this country.

Yeah.
It does come in for a bit of ridicule, but I guess we're stuck with it.

I've heard the figure of 30 minutes thrown around a bit, but I don't know how rough that estimate is.
