Wow, Mr. Rogers watched a horror movie, and liked it!  Surprised

I think that it's safe to say that he probably wouldn't have watched it if it wasn't made by one of his former coworkers. He just seems like he was the kind of guy who will want to know what you're up to and how you're doing long after you're done working together.

The long running BBC film critic show- Film 2013- reviews TH tonight.

Not sure how much stock to put in it these days- once upon a time it was fronted by one of the UK's leading film critics- Barry Norman and was much respected and its reviews influential, now they shove it on last thing at night (12.05 on BBC Scotland!) and its fronted by a  light entertainment presenter!
But I will put up the link to watch BBC nearer the time for those who want to watch it anyway.

I wonder what Mark Kermode thinks of The Hobbit. He's often entertainingly crabbit about blockbusters. Razz

That if he lived on my street he looks like the sort youd warn the kids to keep away from his house- although I am sure for legal reasons he is a lovely man with not a single suspicious thing about him or a black mark to his name- I tend to find most kids tv presenters suspicious these days- blame the BBC for ruining my childhood by seemingly only hiring dodgy folks!!!

There is Kermode vid where he does a mathematical count of words per page to length of films- sadly its not as entertaining as it sounds and is meaningless- he concludes PJ gives every word in the book 3secs screen time- but fails to mention most of the the film has nothing to do with any of the words in the book.  Mad

Rolling Eyes Well fortunately Mr Rogers never worked for the BBC.

Did Kermode do a regular review of AUJ as well?

No, not yet- he reviews films officially for the BBC still (radio programme) so its unlikely he will be allowed to before tonights review on the BBC's flagship film show Film2013 (why they gave the review job to a light entertainment presenter and not to Kermode who they already had on their books anyway is one of the great mysterious of the BBC)

Critics review 'Desolation of Smaug' | POSSIBLE SPOILERS - Page 16 Empty Re: Critics review 'Desolation of Smaug' | POSSIBLE SPOILERS

Post by Eldorion Wed Dec 11, 2013 5:33 pm

James Berardinelli of Reelviews has one of the more on-point reviews I've seen so far.  Plus he seems to know the book better than most.

http://www.reelviews.net/php_review_template.php?identifier=2701

...The Desolation of Smaug often looks and feels more like a video game than a motion picture. There are things to like about the second Hobbit film - the director's vision of Middle Earth is as beguiling as ever - but the bloating that was a problem with An Unexpected Journey is an even bigger issue here.

The Desolation of Smaug is too long and too visually busy to be loved by any but a die-hard fan. Purists - those who treat Tolkien's written word with Biblical reverence - may be horrified. A lot of the running around that consumes the running time bears no resemblance to anything in the books. Although Jackson doesn't change the core story, he treats it like an outline. Less than 50% of what's on screen during the course of The Desolation of Smaug comes from The Hobbit. The rest is culled from Tolkien's notes and Jackson's imagination.

He also describes the climactic fight with Smaug as being a full 30 minutes in length, a number I've seen at several different sites now.

RT posts its first "consensus" for DOS.

http://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/the_hobbit_the_desolation_of_smaug/

While still slightly hamstrung by "middle chapter" narrative problems and its formidable length, The Desolation of Smaug represents a more confident, exciting second chapter for the Hobbit series.

This will change once more reviews are posted (unless all the reviews say the same thing).

1 Tolkien fan who hated it- the daytime tv presenter that hosts it gushed over it and called it 'tremendous' third guy was on the fence more, thought it was great spectacle but called it '200million dollar fan fiction'.
