That was actually another part of her argument that I didn't mention how Rich sees the lesbian relationship not necessarily as sexual but social. It's a way for women to define themselves without it being in relation to men. Lesbian relationships are the same if not better than heterosexual ones (in her opinion) because the women are exploring a world outside of traditional gender roles.Eldorion wrote:Damn, now that is some crabibt, Queen Tin! Everyone is making a play for the Most Crabbit Award now, it seems. Not to get too off-topic, but there was a lot of "women vs. women" stuff in Orange is the New Black. I liked that their portrayal of lesbian relationships was decidedly un-sexy and just as dysfunctional as any of the hetero relationships in the show.Tinuviel wrote:There's a theorist named Adrienne Rich who says that compulsory heterosexuality is an oppressive apparatus that keeps women under the thumb of men. She argues that lesbians are able to escape that apparatus because they don't depend on men at all but each other, much like in Orange. It was so refreshing watching that show because it was women interacting with women against men and the penitentiary that is oppressing them.
And thank you Petty. Please send that half to me as soon as possible before I accidentally start hitting Hobbit children with my driver

Obviously I'm coming at this from a different perspective, being a child of lesbians rather than a lesbian myself, but that perspective (Rich's) seems really far removed from my experience. That's about all I can say on the matter.Tinuviel wrote:That was actually another part of her argument that I didn't mention how Rich sees the lesbian relationship not necessarily as sexual but social. I quite enjoy most of their reviews, both the giant Plinkett ones and the more conventional Half in the Bag ones. I especially appreciate their perspective on The Hobbit not as fans of the book but as fans of movies judging it solely on those criteria. It's interesting to hear how it's both different and the same from some of the complaints from book fans.Radaghast wrote:I started watching that but stopped when one of them said you couldn't pay him to read Tolkien (or something like that).
Re: Critics review 'Desolation of Smaug' | POSSIBLE SPOILERS
I agree Tin, it does seem sad that 'feminine energy' = Romance. I suppose if she is feisty they think thats ok?. Its like feisty is a subterfuge to hide the fact Tauriel is actually an anti-feminist character. They give her knives and a bow and thats supposed to make it all acceptable. Firstly she is only a guard, she has a boss, she has no power of her own, basically she is a secretary involved with the bosses son. With a knife.

I certainly don't mind that, but if you're going to leave the book out of it, leave your distaste for it out of it too. It just seems like an unwarranted dig. Also, I find that the review kind of meandered; it wasn't sharp like the Plinkett reviews. That's just my perspective.Eldorion wrote:I quite enjoy most of their reviews, both the giant Plinkett ones and the more conventional Half in the Bag ones. Re: Critics review 'Desolation of Smaug' | POSSIBLE SPOILERS
Yeah, Half in the Bag definitely meanders. There's an ongoing storyline with Jay and Mike scamming Mr Plinkett (played by a different guy than in the Plinkett reviews). I enjoy it, but I can see how it might be grating for some.
Also, no offence, but you seem really touchy about "digs" against Tolkien. I really don't think he minds since he's, y'know, dead.

Re: Critics review 'Desolation of Smaug' | POSSIBLE SPOILERS
It just seems mean for no good reason, not even a good attempt at humor. "You couldn't pay me to read Tolkien" sounds to me like the guy is too good for Tolkien.

It establishes his perspective on the source material for anyone who is interested to know what his opinion was before he saw the film.
And even if it is "mean for no good reason" ... what does it matter? Part of their schtick is being douchey at times, anyway.

If you're going to be a douche, at least be funny about it. That's all I'm saying

- A great and altogether convincing creature of cinema history, this is a Smaug for the ages. But what made me crazy was the “alternative dragon catching plot” that is somehow concocted by Thorin. Instead of Bilbo learning more useful information and sharing it with the thrush as the dragon flies away, all 9 of the Dwarves elect to go right inside and see what’s up while Smaug and Bilbo are still inside. They engage in several minutes of cat-and-mouse dodging while the great fire-drake tries unsuccessfully to fry them all, and then comes a whole crazy scheme involving the lighting of great forges, hundreds of thousands of gallons of molten gold, quick-flash bombs hastily assembled using Dwarven chemistry sets, Thorin running around with his “heroic wheelbarrow,” and an attempt to make Smaug the Golden a 100% literal statement. Yes, imagine a gilded gold dragon. It’s a large and complicated set piece that left me scratching my head. I mean, nobody saw this coming, I never could have imagined Thorin himself openly speaking to Smaug and taunting him with “slug” and other such insults.

Re: Critics review 'Desolation of Smaug' | POSSIBLE SPOILERS
Jackson likes his big action set-pieces and Tolkien liked his dialogue - they don't get along well and I think that's what this is a case of.

Re: Critics review 'Desolation of Smaug' | POSSIBLE SPOILERS
I'm honestly sort of numb to it by this point. sort of. Is it going to take Smaug being possessed and sent to Mordor where he blows fire into Baradur, thereby making Sauron's eye thing from lotr, to wake me up to it all again?

Re: Critics review 'Desolation of Smaug' | POSSIBLE SPOILERS
As I said in the thread I started look on the bright side, the further it drifts away from the book, the less viewers can lay the blame on Tolkien.
And frankly I'd rather see Jackson f*ck up the hobbit and gurantee he has no chance of eviscerating The Silmarillion.
Heroic Wheelbarrow?
Eldo why oh why don't we have a Vomiting Emoticon?

Re: Critics review 'Desolation of Smaug' | POSSIBLE SPOILERS
I think I'm pretty numb, but not enough to actually watch the movie and reading comments that praise PJ basically give me a headache. But I think the thing has descended into farce, albeit unintentional, so it's almost hard to take seriously at this point.

Re: Critics review 'Desolation of Smaug' | POSSIBLE SPOILERS
As I noted on another thread, the action sequence quoted here just serves to neuter Smaug. The fact that he suddenly has 9 dwarves and a hobbit running around his lair like mice and he is helpless to eradicate them is absurd. He TOOK that lair when it was a KINGDOM of dwarves and well defended (although he took it by surprise) and now they can just dart to and fro within and not be burned, eaten, squashed or otherwise eliminated? Pitiful...and apparently Thorin thinks he can encase Smaug in molten gold and thereby kill or at least immobilize him? Come on man!Mrs Figg wrote: MASSIVE SPOILER DONT READ IT IF YOU DONT WANT A CRABBIT EXPLOSION. srsly dont.
