Re: Sherlock - BBC [3]
Yeah, I get that perspective Petty.
Still it can of course also be seen as a good thing. That you have a series that treats the subject matter a bit freer, and then you also have the Brett thing which is very faithfull.
And I think most of the things in this episode kindacoulda happened in the cannon. Just because it doesn't say that Holmes attended any of the weddings doesn't mean he might not have done.
So they are basically filling in gaps and not altering, which are two very different things.

That sounds suspiciously to me like the sort of excuse put forward by the Coven.

Re: Sherlock - BBC [3]
One must have faith in the Moff Amarie!
I am hoping that the third episode is Moffat penned and that all the small bits I enjoyed in the last one are Moff insertions for the final episode.
It better be as they have used up the one below par episode rule they get a series- it was the Banker episode in series 1, Baskerville in 2 and Sign of Three is this series- they don't get off with another below par episode so I am relying on the Moff to produce a blinder for the finale.

Trailer for ep 3 (and it is a Moffat penned episode)
This one is apparently based on
This one is apparently based on
- Spoiler:
- the final Holmes story the Last Bow-in which he has retired to take up beekeeping but is called out of retirement by the British Government to get secrets from the Germans and the story is tied to the early rumblings of WW1.
The main bad however comes from a different short story about a blackmailer- Charles Augustus Milverton- and its a rather straight forward affair in which Holmes doesnt so much solve the murder as witness one happening then cover it up.

The trailer is intriguing as well; definitely looking forward to this. Especially since Moffat penned my favorite episodes of each of the first two seasons.

Haha. Well, they might have said it. But it would certainly not be true.
I would look strangely on anyone using those kind of excuses for the Middle Earth movies for any reason other than spin.
The Sign of Tree is of course that way as it's a complete creation by the writers. I'll consede it's not a great point however, as one only has to look at the Empty Hearse to see plenty of alterasions a well.

Good to see someone is back to keep the fan aspect of this thread going.
It was only for about 5 minutes, but I tried to keep the fire burning at least.
I like how deeply people on tumblr go into the story to find clues to support their theories. I'm guessing the wish might be the father of the thought in most cases. Not that I put it beyond any of the four main people involved (Moffat, Freeman, Gatiss and Benedict) to put some subtle hints in just to tease.

Thing is though the Empty Hearse- for all its changes and additions, is still in its core themes and references recognisable as being based on events in the Empty Hearse- its all different but the template is still there- Sherlock still returns in disguise, still reveals his true identity to Watson in a completely unthinking, likely to cause a heart attack manner, the reference to the 'fans' is in the original ect.
The Sign of Three however is not recognisable as any of the original stories, and bears no resemblance to the story the title is gleaned from, The Sign of Four.
For me Sherlock has been at its best when it recreates and updates the basic original premise of a story, and its done that every episode for me except the last one, which was weaker for it.
They are better at updating than they are at inventing Holmes stories I feel.

I also agree with the episode being a bit in two parts as you said.
- Spoiler:
- Interestingly as opposed to the Reichenbach Falls Thompson only cowrote this one. So I wonder if some of that was down to Moffat and Gatiss writing the wedding part of the episode, letting Thompson handle the murder.

I have no idea how the writing works for Sherlock.
Moffat and Gatiss are only down as co-creators in the credits on episodes they didnt write.
Obviously its their baby and from interviews where they have talked about discussion Sherlock on the phone they clearly throw ideas about and come up with the basic premise of each episode and the series arc- but how involved they are after that in the actual script, how much they rewrite, make suggestions and the like I have no idea. Especially as Who must take up a hell of a lot of his time (and Im thinking not just about making it, but promoting it and satisfying the fan base with convention appearances, panels ect as well)
Still, it's an opinion of course so others might disagree. - Blue
Yup, which is why I peppered my post with phrases like - 'For me' and 'I feel'

Re: Sherlock - BBC [3]
I had been wondering if there as a grand Moff plan as that might explain the last two episodes more- as whilst as 2 of 3 episodes they are a bit short on typical Sherlock mystery stuff, they might seem to fit and be more appropriate seen in the context of 12 episodes (assuming 3 episodes for series 4 and 5)

Re: Sherlock - BBC [3]
Wow, that would be a very pleasant surprise.
It's even on fjordlandian news. That must mean something good, they not alway being that quick on the uptake.
I also wonder how long we will have to wait.
Still Freeman will have a lot more time when he finishes the Hobbit and Moffat will sooner or later be leaving Who. Benedicts schedule might be as crazy as ever however.
So hopefully it won't take as loing as last time. We'll just have to wait and see I guess.

WHAT REALLY! ON NEWS HERE!! GIMME A LINK!
the actors have both said that they are immensely proud of the show and would like to do it forever, i mean benedict commissioned series two before the producers even knew they would have one also, the schedule fits them rather well, as tv-series-makers are a hell of a lot more effective than movie-makers. They more or less makes three movies in a couple of months of filming, while a movie would spend at least half a year filming. that leaves them a lot more free to do other things than just sherlock
