Re: The Desolation of Smaug pre-release thread [3] [SPOILERS]
It's not uncommon for reviewers to get details like that wrong but it could very well be a plot point. After all, the AS is established at the beginning of the AUJ.

Re: The Desolation of Smaug pre-release thread [3] [SPOILERS]
Wasn't the Arkenstone giving the owner the right to rule another thing Boyens and Walsh came up with? I think it was in the extended AUJ.
That of course will make Bilbo finding and keeping it for his own a conscious theft from Thorin. Instead of him finding it and taking it for it's beauty, and later deciding not to tell Thorin that he's found it. Provided they kept that part in of course. It really feels like their changing every single detail for the sake of it. And completely ignoring the ramifications the changes have for the story.
The way this is turning out I'd be surprised if any details from the original story survives unchanged or reimagined in some sense.

Every detail might as well be changed for all this trilogy () has resembled the book.

a) and c) I think.Halfwise wrote:"Bilbo’s task is to steal the magical Arkenstone jewel from Smaug, which will (somehow) enable Thorin to regain his throne."
I can't tell if the reviewer is
a) being sarcastic
b) doesn't know jack-shit about the Hobbit.
OR
c) The writers pulled another ding-a-ling plot variation to make the story 'more exciting'. Rolling Eyes
The only bright spot I see is,
Thanks to the more intimate focus of the drama, some of the actors get to shine here as they didn’t in Journey, with particular highlights for Freeman’s increasingly heroic Bilbo

Re: The Desolation of Smaug pre-release thread [3] [SPOILERS]
I bumped the spoiler-free thread for you. Though to be honest I kind of regret spoiling myself by reading the whole IMDb thread yesterday. Sort of takes away some of the fun of anticipation, though on the other hand maybe it will help me avoid the crushing feeling of disappointment when I actually see the film.
Re: The Desolation of Smaug pre-release thread [3] [SPOILERS]
Based on the dialogue in the trailers I'm leaning towards (c). It explains Thranduil's silly "you seek that which would give you the right to rule" line that was featured so prominently. And when asked about the Arkenstone, Thorin says "that, Master Burglar, is why you are here."halfwise wrote:"Bilbo’s task is to steal the magical Arkenstone jewel from Smaug, which will (somehow) enable Thorin to regain his throne."

most of that B roll was just annoying, though I enjoyed the Lake town sets: those are gorgeous.

I really appreciate you posting that Bungo, but I'm already regretting having spoiled myself so thoroughly yesterday so I'm trying to use self-control and not watch.
Re: The Desolation of Smaug pre-release thread [3] [SPOILERS]
The things I do for this forum.
I just spoil myself and don't worry about it, but then again, I had no idea that Azog was going to play such a big role in the movies until I saw AUJ last year. Color me surprised.

Re: The Desolation of Smaug pre-release thread [3] [SPOILERS]
Good point. So it's probably the reviewer is judging the movie on its own merits.Eldorion wrote:Based on the dialogue in the trailers I'm leaning towards (c). I'm guessing this has probably already been pointed out but this seems to go against Tolkien's idea about the Arkenstone.

Re: The Desolation of Smaug pre-release thread [3] [SPOILERS]
Is anyone arguing otherwise? I don't mean here, I know no one on this forum has said so, but even on PJ-leaning forums does anyone actually still claim that this stuff has any basis in Tolkien? Genuine question here.

Great, Bungo!
As for the clip:
"Bilbo and the amazing gyroscopic stay upright type barrels"

I'm still upset that Bilbo won't actually be riding a barrel, instead he'll be clinging to the side of one the whole time.

Re: The Desolation of Smaug pre-release thread [3] [SPOILERS]
BUNGO YOUR THE BEST!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
As for the B-Roll, I particularly liked the first bit where Bilbo is telling them all to shut up, nice bit of character growth there. Orlando talking to PJ about his "360" or whatever was really cute, especially because PJ was talking to him like he was five years old:lol: Lee Pace looks great (as is expected) though his dialogue is still a bit weird. And what's with the lack of actual weapons? Everyone was hitting each other with green sticks, even in the normal fight scenes!!!!!
