Re: Seen any good films lately?
It's on my lists of films to see. I thought it looked interesting from the trailer.
Re: Seen any good films lately?
I watched Hugo Yesterday. its sweet but self consciously sweet, is it supposed to be a parody of sweet french films like Amelie? because it felt like it.

Re: Seen any good films lately?
I never saw Hugo but it felt like film critics and awards shows mainly loved it because film preservation was a theme in the movie. They do love to reward movies which talk about how important movies are (see also: Argo).
Re: Seen any good films lately?
just saw "Ted" with my sister and mom and dad, it was hilarious, anyone who hasn't seen it, it's totally worth it lots of funny references and Ted sounds like Peter Griffin (which the movie also points out, although i heard it earlier, heh ^^)
Re: Seen any good films lately?
I was surprised to hear good things about Ted when it came out so it's on my "maybe watch if the opportunity presents itself" list for a while.
Re: Seen any good films lately?
u should, it's surprisingly funny and moving despite having a teddy bear as a main character
Re: Seen any good films lately?
You serious about the Ryan Reynolds part?
How was Mila Kunis? I'd heard that her role was kinda superfluous, which is a shame if true cause I like some of her other work in comedies.

Re: Seen any good films lately?
meeh, she's ok, not a very memorable part nor a bad one, and she played it good. not bad, but the same can be said about the main character (not ted)... so.. idk..
yepp.. reynolds as gay.. (spoilers ahead..)

Re: Seen any good films lately?
btw, anyone seen Buried? the whole movie is set in a coffin burried in the ground and he got like panick attacks, because claustrophobic..
Re: Seen any good films lately?
Buried sounded like an interesting cinematic experiment but I'd have to be in the right mood to want to be freaked out by claustrophobia.
Re: Seen any good films lately?
I saw that film & really didnt like the ending ! Im claustraphobic also ! My friend read the book & she said the books ending was different from the film ?

Re: Seen any good films lately?
I watched The Godfather tonight with my family. I've seen all the most famous scenes multiple times on YouTube, but the only time before that I'd seen the entire film all the way through was when I was about 11, watching with my mom, and she covered my eyes during the most violent parts (and when Michael and Apollonia have sex).
Needless to say, I was able to appreciate the film a lot more now. The pacing is unusual but utterly brilliant in how it unfolds like a novel. I was surprised, given how highly regarded the film is by high-brow types, that it flirted with pulpiness at times. A lot of the death scenes came across as awkward because, while there was genuine emotion involved, the floundering around was a little comical. A few lines were kinda flat but the movie is of course extremely quotable and it's a really great story. None of its flaws were more than minor blips on the radar.

Re: Seen any good films lately?
It's nice to know that it still plays well to a younger generation. That's all the more impressive for being a 40 year old film! I'd be interested in where you thought it flirted with pulpiness. My guess is that no such clear line existed at the time.
The Godfather trilogy was so influential that I think it's fair to say that every trilogy and mini-series since owes a debt to it. All the best directors of our time have studied it, borrowed from it, and sometimes improved upon it. But Coppola, Brando, Pacino and the others first blazed the trail.

Re: Seen any good films lately?
I really did think some of the death scenes were too over-the-top/goofy. I'm tired right now but those are the parts I recall feeling a little melodramatic. They were far outweighed by the many nuanced, subtle moments of characterization and atmosphere. The acting was top-notch from start to finish. As famous as certain moments are, seeing them in context makes them much more powerful.
This makes me really want to re-watch Apocalypse Now. I saw that for the first time last year and was really impressed, but I could tell I'd need another viewing to take it all in.

Re: Seen any good films lately?
I watched Die Hard 2 yesterday. Never realised how much unnecessary swearing there is in it. The first one had a bit but always seemed to be in places you would expect. Not sure a scene went by without 3 or 4 'fuck's in it.

I still find Taxi Driver shocking.
