Re: Seen any good films lately?
I really enjoyed the pace and mood of Lady in the Water- it unfolds at the pace of a good book and I find thats rare in a modern studio film.
I wasnt blown away by Unbreakable, but it did entertain. But it seemed to have less subtext than Lady in the Water and less subtly.

I watched 'we bought a zoo' last night.
My other half thought I got teary eyes before realising I was removing an eye lash.
Was ok though.

Re: Seen any good films lately?
I liked 6th sense as it gave you a perspective from the ghosts side of things, just like "The Others" did, (with Nicole Kidman) I kinda like "The happening" but it was a bit predictable. Sadly, I didnt like "The village", but it showed how prejudice people can be ? I was surprised Joaquin Phoenix was bumped off so early ? It seems like he likes spiritual themes, things that cant be logically explained ? The "what if" side of things ?

Re: Seen any good films lately?
I think Signs was his best movie. He showcased an incredible ability to build up tension to such a point that the smallest thing (an alien heel disappearing into the corn, or the brief reflection of an alien hand reaching for a butter knife) evoked screams from the audience. Absolutely masterful.

Re: Seen any good films lately?
You think he should have left it as hints and suggestions? That may have left a longer impact than tying it all up neatly as he did. I thought the alien was pretty okay looking, but every glimpse of an alien body part just moving out of frame etc was cinematic magic.

Re: Seen any good films lately?
btw for anyone who hasn't seen it, DO NOT go searching for snippets online. Any shots of the aliens out of context will just leave you wondering "what's the big deal?" and ruin it when you finally see it in context. All these shots MUST be seen in context, and preferably without too much running to the fridge for snacks. Let the carefully constructed tension build as intended for maximum effect.

Re: Seen any good films lately?
I thought it was just some really bad cgi really.
Think it should have been left as it was although I can see why the director wanted a resolution of sorts.

If I catch anything messing with my crops like that, those alien body parts won't leave the field.....

Re: Seen any good films lately?
Went to see the new superman film tonight, "Man of Steel", It was actually better than I thought it would be. Henry Cavill makes a decent Superman,
- Spoiler:
- ="Ofcourse there is the usual crash bang wallop as goodie defeats baddie by crashing thru every building imaginable ! It seemed to me that to save mankind there was an awful lot of destruction ? Kevin Costner was believeable as the foster dad, the foster mother was suitably grounded & even Lois Lane wasnt the swooning, giggling airhead of previous films. The flash backs were not overly done & told you enough of what you needed to know I think, Thank God there was no shining green goo that depleted Superman so readily ! sadly we had to have America being the only country on Earth when the aliens arrived & only America can save the day, Sorry Eldo & others ! no harm intended ! Im glad superman's planet was more realistic & not the "fluff" we've had before! No cheesy music either ! & we had an explanation of the symbol on SMs costume. "

Glad I could help you get the spoilers tags fixed.
I was really looking forward to seeing Man of Steel, but I heard a bunch of people say it was crap when it first came out so I wasn't sure. The reviews seem to have become more mixed though so I might go see it to relax this weekend once the summer camp is over.

Re: Seen any good films lately?
Havent seen the new superman film yet- but I do find it troubling and disturbing that the American military seems to have some sort of recruitment campaign tied up with the films marketing.
I dont really think conning people into military service with ideas of superhumans is very healthy. Nor is using comic books to recruit by.

Re: Seen any good films lately?
Man of Steel's advertising campaign has been ominpresent, at least here in the States, and they reportedly have over 100 companies that paid to have promotional product tie-ins. Aside from the National Guard, I think Gillette's "How Does the Man of Steel Shave?" has been the most prominent (and probably the most bearable of them all).

Re: Seen any good films lately?
I just always find it questionable when fantasy and the very real like war get mixed in this way for a political end.

Re: Seen any good films lately?
It's not like Superman doesn't have a long and storied history of being co-opted into war efforts.
But I tend to find really in-your-face product tie-ins like this to be distasteful in general.

Re: Seen any good films lately?
Yeah was no better in the 40's either- just as distasteful.
