It's actually even worse than you are likely imagining. Behind a mosque in the market (a labrynthine concoction) is a stone fountain with a steel cup attached with a chain. The water is chilled and delicious, but its a...um...community cup.

(start the hike the day after tomorrow)

Cairo has alcohol. In somewhat limited distribution, but heck, the Egyptians invented beer. They ain't giving that habit up.

Is it mainly distributed by non-Muslims, or are their liberal/non-observant Muslims who get in on it too?

I always just assumed they all drank really and it was just one of those things everyone got round by mutually agreeing not to talk about it. Surely they arent serious about it!!! No

No wonder they are always having jihads, their young men dont get a chance to take it out on each other properly, outside a nightclub over a girl in a skirt the size of a belt and a boob tube designed for someone several sizes smaller, being sick on the pavement whilst her best mate holds her hair back.
5-10 yeas of doing that and no one wants a jihad when they have a beer belly. Nod drunken

Will the punk-rap music be from built-in speakers on the raft? Just curious!

I hope so... that YouTube video has set expectations that I am not sure will be met.

I think I am going at the right time... some of the videos make it look incredibly dangerous but I think they are during wet season... been a few months since then so should be a lot tamer.

Although I do fully expect to be out of the boat at least once!
