Baltimore wins the HarBowl! A well-played game on all sides, I must say, though.
Re: All things sporting
I can't wait until the Aussie Rules season starts again. I love talking about (actual) sports!

You're just jealous that your versions of football don't have as many concussions as ours.
Re: All things sporting
We hit heads together as hard - without helmets - nor any body armour at all, come to think. We also don't run one foot forward and push and grunt, we run at full speed and make bone crunching collisions. Aussie Rules is a Man's game, you see.

Well the Niners played well but could not overcome the Ravens. Congrats Eldo
And Petty, I'm pretty sure that your statement is half true, everyone who voted was concussed in 08, on both sides . 2000 and 04 were fine

Thanks! And I concur: a well-played game from San Fran as well. May the two teams meet again in February.

I'll agree about 2000, since Gore won the popular vote in that year and (even if you ignore the constitutional and moral issues with Florida's voting procedures) it was only the antiquated electoral college that gave Bush the Presidency, not a majority of American voters.
Re: All things sporting
And there I was thinking Bush just rigged the election using his brothers Governship and his ex-campaign managers legal powers!

What about the supsicous number of democrat leaning black folks who mysterly couldn't vote thanks to a 'glitch' saying they were criminals? Does that happen a lot in the US too?

Jim Crow in Cyberspace. Quite long but a fascinating and illuminating read if you have the time. I haven't read that book in a long time, but as best I remember it, the short version is that Florida blocked a lot of legitimate voters from participating in the 2000 election, most from heavily Democratic populations who would likely have opposed Bush. The numbers involved would have been more than enough to tip the very narrow margin of victory that Bush held in Florida.

Gary Speed. A true Welsh legend. Amazing player, potential to become an amazing international manager, and more importantly, he was a great, great gentlemen. I think a nation is in shock. The world of football is in shock.
A lot of crap is going on in the world.

Sad news indeed. Even sadder, given the manner of his death, there will be lots of speculation and I doubt his family will get much peace from the media over it.
Bad day resuls wise for Rangers, a 0-1 loss away to Killie, our one time 10 point lead at the top over Celtic (who won 5-0) is now 4.

Re: All things sporting
Thats terrible news about Gary Speed, being a Welsh hobbit I thought he had great potential for the future. He seemed happy just a few days ago, its very sad and very baffling how anyone with so much good in his life could feel so desperate, the only way i can make any sense of it is if he was suffering from depression, and as I once had a brief battle with that bastard myself, I get that it can screw with your perceptions.

Having depression as a brother and anxiety as a sister (yes, I put it lightly, but they're pricks to have in your family), I can feel for the poor guy. Super talent and super fame (and even super wealth) so rarely bring an easy (mental) life. And I feel for people who live under the microscope (and despise the likes of Murdoch).

Re: All things sporting
This Sunday the Baltimore Ravens host the thus-far winless Indianapolis Colts. The Colts are the only team to have failed to win even a single game in 12 (out of a 16 game season), which is rather rare and really quite pathetic. I'd feel sorry for them, but as a Baltimorean I'm required to hate the Colts for leaving Baltimore in the '80s to go to Indiana. (Technically the Ravens left Cleveland to come to Baltimore in the '90s, but we don't talk about that. )
In other news, my beloved Cowboys play a high profile Sunday Night game against divisional rivals the New York Giants. The outcome of that game will have major playoff implications in that the winner will be in a strong position to win the division, while the loser will have to fight tooth and nail with a number of other teams even to try to get a wild card spot. Should be a couple of good games this week: one in that it should be evenly matched and exciting, and the other will just be good to see a rival crushed.

I hope the Colts win. How embarrassing that would be for the Ravens! Indeed, I'm going to think of the Colts as the Indianopolis Hobbits, and the Ravens as the Nazgul Ravens. Will make me pray harder to Eru on the outcome.

Re: All things sporting
The Colts actually had a chance at that last week, when they played the New England Patriots, who have the same record as the Ravens so far and whom the Colts have an intense rivalry with. The Colts actually came fairly close to winning, but the Ravens have a stronger defense than the Patriots, so I don't think these Hobbits will be making it out of the Shire.
Also, "Nazgul Ravens" has a nice ring to it, thanks Orwell!
