Well, you will have to barrack for the Socceroos this time, I can't see any other alternative. One of your own players can represent both the Rangers (in a sense) and the Socceroos (actually) at the next World Cup. (Fingers crossed, of course! The Socceroos are no certainty to get there either!) Go Matty McKay! Also, Matty being a "Ranger" will bring a Tolkien aspect to our Socceroos assault! Cooool!

Re: All things sporting
Many, many, many Aussie football fans hate using the word "soccer." For that reason alone, many other Aussies "love" using that word. I know I do. hee hee. Mind you, as football has become more widely popular, I've started calling football "football" and Aussie Rules "Aussie Rules", to avoid confusion. I do like both games and like to know what sport I'm talking about without saying, "Do you mean Aussie Rules when you say "football" or do you mean "Soccer"?"" Get the drift.
Oh yes, I do agree football is the sport most logically the one to be called football. Aussie rules uses every part of the body (including our brains ). But "Socceroos" it is. I love the fact we're "Socceroos"- and if it offends the Purists, all the better.
NB Many Aussies who don't love football as a rule , love our "Socceroos". We're fond of it. Even our Purists call our National Team the "Socceroos" without blinking. I think it's best not to be precious about it, Preciouss; not in Aussie anyhow. People laugh at people being precious about this issue. If someone tells me to not use the word "Soccer" I use it seven or eight times in every sentence henceforth. It's the Aussie way!
Btw Petty, Aussies plan to win the World Cup, but we haven't got the pedigree to do it - for Eru's sake, it's our fourth sport!! - but we don't plan to let that stop us from winning it anyhow. That's actually a very Scottish attitude as well, if you ask me! As I see it, you have no choice but to support us. We might meet England in the final! --- Nah, just jibin'--- it'll be Spain or Brazil or Germany, and not some pathetic also-ran ).
Oh yes. We'll win the final when we get there -- except if it's Italy, of course --- f*&^%*g cheats!

Re: All things sporting
Bring back the true tradition of football, I say!
"The term soccer originated in England, first appearing in the 1880s as an Oxford "-er" abbreviation of the word "association". (Wikipedia)
So you can see Mr Tyrant that Orwell, like all genuine folk, keep in touch with the important aspects of History, paying proper homage, and giving stick to the so-called Purists who don't even know their own History. What fools they are!
Quite respectable attitude, really.. don't you think?

Re: All things sporting
Except you will not want for moonshine Odo if you go around believing the English!! Invented football? Nonsense it's a Scots game the English don't invent games that are contact sports, they invent tediously dull sports like cricket. And we all know the only reason anyone else can bear to play such a boring dull game is because its a chance for ex-colonies to embarass and humilate the Engllish!
And obviously football therefore being Scottish cannot have derived a word like soccer from association as assocation implies some sort of governing body and rules- and we don't like rules up here, they get in the way-look whats happened to our national team -50's, 60's, 70's and early 80's- players smoke and drink buckie, during matches if they want and Scotland qualifies for Europe and World Cup every time- ban drinking and smoking and we've failed to get to a major championship since. The evidence is all there you know.

Watched the game Ally, your lot were hard done by- that was never a red- and you got the only try of the game. Just a shame the kicking was a touch off, that was painful. Ah well, there's always next time and in the meantime there is aways buckie!

Re: All things sporting
That'll be a good game Chris- need to see about finding a live sream for it!
Celtic slipped up again ( ) they were 3 nil down at halftime, sadly they pulled it back second half to 3-3.
Rangers should have won their game- 1-0 up and into injury time, a lot of injury time- we lost the goal 5 minutes into injury time. 5 minutes! Sloppy from Rangers though conceding that late on, 2 points dropped rather than 1 gained and would really have put the screws on Celtic.
Still sitting comfortably clear at top of the league however, just should have been even better.

I suspect Chris tonight may be a big buckie celebration night for you! And some Man Utd players will be getting the full Fergie Hairdryer treatment!
Another win for Rangers gving us our best start to the league in years, sitting 9 points clear and looking good. Even if the club seems to be falling apart financially behind the scenes.

Re: All things sporting
A comparison.
England fans singing their national anthem before a game against there greatest footballing foes, the Germans.
Now assuming that dirge hasn't made you want to slit your wrists here's Scotland fans singing their unofficial national anthem before a game we expect to lose against Italy.
Another reason to be independent- we'd instantly have a much better natioanl anthem!
And because I put the Doctor Who cast doing the Proclamers 500 miles on the Who thread, heres the Tartan Army singing it.

I've gotta say, I've been really impressed with the 49ers this season. Also, every time they win another game, it occurs to me that you must be celebrating.
Re: All things sporting
After the last decade, I'm thrilled every time they win. Especially against good teams! Can't wait for the Thanksgiving game against Baltimore
Packers have been amazing too. Id be glad to see them lose 2 or 3 just to give Niners a better seed.
Your Ravens and Cowboys aren't doing terrible either Eldo. I was excited to see the ravens beat the steelers!

Re: All things sporting
Thanks, Lorient! I'm excited that we've beaten the Steelers twice (hate Pittsburgh ) but it seems like we keep losing to really bad teams. Although, maybe that's a point in our favor when we play the 49ers.
I've been a bit disappointed with the Cowboys, but I'm hopeful they can keep their game together for the rest of the season and get a wild card spot.

Re: All things sporting
Wild card is a little far fetched for the Cowboys with the way the teams NFC North and South are playing. Definitely have a shot to win division though.
Really hope Baltimore plays the way they did against the Seahawks (no offense)
